  • In his most recent trip to Brazil, David Harvey talks about the urban protests dubbed "middle class revolts" that have been taking place all over the world, from São Paulo to Istanbul, against the backdrop of what he calls the "crisis of planetary urbanization".
This lecture took place in Curitiba on November 18th 2014, during a series of talks entitled "The Political Economy Of Urbanization", marking the publishing of the second and final volume of his COMPANION TO MARX'S CAPITAL. This trip took him also to the cities of Brasília, Recife, Fortaleza and São Paulo. The lectures also celebrated the publishing of Boitempo's new edition of Volume II of Marx's Capital - the first edition revised and expanded according to the documents of the MEGA2 project. Recently, Boitempo's edition of Volume I of Capital was awarded the Jabuti Prize for translation - the most important prize in the brazilian publishing world. All of professor Harvey's lectures were recorded and are being published here in Boitempo's channel on CZcams.

1:00:00 I don't understand... Prof. Harvey keeps on talking about Marxism as the ultimate solution, but it is precisely in countries led by Marxist-Leninist ideology that people need a license to have children... Moreover Marx wrote 200 years ago and many things have changed since, many Capitalist-Western countries have socialized healthcare and high quality public education today. Finally, how could we have Communication and Information technology without capital? space exploration requires capital investment.
Capital is not only money: it comprises ideas, willingness and capabilities of individuals --> perhaps we need more balance beween the talkers and the doers. Think 10 and do 1, but do it well.

@@vidaripollen Personally, from what I have understood, the problem is not so much capitalism, per se, but criminal capitalism. Most of the world wealth is stored in offshore accounts in tax havens. Most of this capital is fruit of illegal activities and fraud. Eco-nomy, just like Eco-logy, are cycles that work only if energy (as well as money) flows through the system: i.e energy is accumulated and stored in plant matter that is then transferred and transformed into other forms of energy i.e. animals or fire and when the animals dye and wood is burned to ashes, plants regain the energy and transform it into new life again and again. The same should be true for economy and money.
It is useless and worthless to accumulate capital in some account on the Cayman islands that cannot be used and then tell young entrepreneurs to "go fund themselves" .
That is not capitalism, that is Authoritarian dictatorship... somewhat like the one party system in which either you are part of it or you are out and only the high ranking generals get to eat meat and live in dignified conditions while all the others are the same: slaves working for the elite.
Small/medium business capitalism is what built the world, and that is what they are killing in the name of large semi-government corporations... hmmm do the definitions "capitalism" and "communism", "fascism" and ""freedom" even mean anything anymore?
have you ever read Animal Farm by Orson Welles?

There's a misunderstanding about capital here. Capital only means surplus value that leads to unearned income. It's money from thin air via other people's labor. Add loans given by banks. More money from thin air produced by intermediary banks. There's your capital.
