David Harvey on Karl Marx

  • Livestream 2014-10-09 - David Harvey explains why a fundamental revision of the dominant Marx interpretation is necessary and what makes Capital a book that changed the course of history and, as Harvey suggests, may do so again.
    According to Harvey we should better read Marx instead of Piketty as he writes:
    “There is much that is valuable in Piketty’s data sets. But his explanation as to why the inequalities and oligarchic tendencies arise is seriously flawed. His proposals as to the remedies for the inequalities are naïve if not utopian. And he has certainly not produced a working model for capital of the twenty-first century. For that we still need Marx or his modern-day equivalent.”
    About David Harvey:
    David Harvey teaches at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and is the author of many books, including Social Justice and the City, The Condition of Postmodernity, The Limits to Capital, A Brief History of Neoliberalism, Spaces of Global Capitalism, and A Companion to Marx's Capital.
    After his lecture Harvey will have a discussion with Senator in the Parliament of the the Dutch Socialist Party (SP) and Marx expert, Geert Reuten, and Professor of Financial Geography Ewald Engelen. Kirsten van den Hul will moderate the evening.

    I just finished listening to this in bed. Loved it. De Balie, could you time-stamp the lecture and following discussion? I think it might improve the accessibility. For example the Picketty question is at 1:28:09 and Harvey's response is at 1:30:55

    I was angry at age 25, when my bachelor's of science led to attempting to repay tens of thousands in debt with a $7.50/hour wage.
    I was angry at age 29, when I was working my ass off for $12/hour with even more debt and a master's of science.
    Here I am at 35 with a PhD, seeing few to no academic openings, unemployment, no savings, and none of my debt repaid.
    Where will the revolution start? I'm ready to participate. My options seem to be revolution or disappearing into the Amazon and becoming a hunter-gatherer.

      @@Danskadreng haha. a revolution will come, but not yours. the current trajectory we're on would suggest that the Far right in the US is about to be "born" they don't exist yet, regardless of people's affinity to use "far right" as a weapon to smear people. when that happens the far left (your revolution) is going to collapse and we're going to end up with something completely contrary to the "ideal" you in-vision.
      the only thing you're going to accomplish is fucking everything up for the rest of us normal people. so thanks for that.

    33:00 Harvey says that if the falling rate of profit is correct then there should be less laborers, and cites a 1 billion person increase in workers since 1980. However, the population of the world has increased 3 billion since then, so I'm not really sure this is a good argument.

    • @jordonwiersema2807
      @jordonwiersema2807 Před 3 lety +1

      Okay, did a little more research. The proportion did increase-if the overall population kept up with the increase in the workforce then the world population would have been 10 billion in 2010.

    David is good to hear ...but he does a poor job on transitional revolutionary reforms when asked...eg he just said we should talk about things and ask that they be put on the agenda. The question asked for specific examples. One would be to organise around public ownership and control of finance and banks...more can be found in Trotsky's Transistional program for a socialist revolution...things like the demand to open the books and transparency.
