  • In this video I share my 2 year Japanese Futon update! I cover how I hang my futon during the day, how I clean it in the sun, and how it has changed my life over the past two years. I also go into minimalism, money, and living a simplistic life. Enjoy!

    I don't understand why someone would say that it shouldn’t be about economic reasons. I started minimalism because I wanted a space that was clear of clutter, but I have stuck to it BECAUSE it's so economical. I'm shocked to understand how many things there are out there we don't need and I'm grateful that my practice saves me money. Honestly it's also one of the reasons why I've been able to convince a few of my friends to try it out!

    • @chasewilson7980
      @chasewilson7980 Před 3 lety +11

      A lot of the minimalist movements are classist, in that they cater to a refined, cultivated living experience that STILL revolves around the objects that you buy (spending more money to get higher quality, longer lasting objects, is, regardless, still building identity surrounding the objects you buy i.e. consumerist capitalism) not only that, but the minimalist life style tends to be only accessible to people who have the resources, whether financial or time, to reduce waste and become a minimalist consumer. "Minimalist zero-waste" items are exponentially more expensive than other things that may not last as long. I am not critiquing you or your experience, but for a lot of people who dont have resources available to them can't be minimalist zero-waste. It is not economical.

    • @thunderlifestudios
      @thunderlifestudios Před 3 lety +2

      @@chasewilson7980 minimalism really should be about practical declutter. Buying better quality is smart if you can afford to. But if you can't you have to take care of your stuff regardless else if its badly made it will likely require replacement effectively over time some things bec9me more expensive because they are cheaper or not taken care of. If income is an issue the point of your minimizingy would be to make home life less cluttered and just removing unneeded things like 12 years of newspaper as an obvious example. Otherwise if your home is legitimately functional and you have use for things then why not keep it? I'm getting rid of my mattress because its too heavy to lift alone, my dresser because i never use it and my nightstand because I don't need it either (I use it but it only holds rarely used items for when i go to the shooting range), I repurposed one of my glass desks tops as floor shelfs next to my futon bed to place my things on even though technically it's not necessary.

    Putting your mattress in the sun is definitely a great way to keep it clean. I once rescued a couple of kittens and for a few weeks I kept them in my bedroom until I found a home for them, they had a litter box that they used, but somehow they ended up spraying all over my mattress, it was really weird because there were no visible signs of cat pee, no stains, just this terrible cat pee smell... I was broke, so I pulled my mattress out into the sun, sprayed the heck outta it with diluted vinegar, after about 3 days in the summer sun, that smell was totally gone, I ended up getting another 3 years outta that mattress until I gave it to a friend.

It feels so much cleaner to change the energy from bedroom to living room.. I’m so glad I did this .. I wake up clearer and the routine feels more mindful... I gave my old bed and luxurious mattress away and I’ve not missed it at all... ✌️✌️

    thought I'd mention.....
    you mentioned the moisture coming from down under... this might be worth researching for your health benefit.
    You might want to slip something under your mattress..... such as the tatami mat, aluminum foil mattress(camping or picnic waterproof) or and cardboard boxes.
    the aluminum foil mattress and the cardboard will help keep the cold air down from shooting up from down under and also the will keep you warm.
    You wonder why the homeless people on the street all uses cardboard boxed straight on top of the cement .. this is the very reason why.
    Also, if you are a camper, consider putting cardboard boxes on the floor in your tent.
    Consider putting sleeping bag over the usual camping cushion on top of the cardboard box.... you will definitely feel the difference the next day.
    Also, the cold from down under can cause stroke...... can be subtle and not but if you pay attention, you can perhaps recognize small changes... such as mouth or the jaw line is slightly turned away or not, part of ones body tingles or numb.... etc.
    I am just sharing my knowledge.......

    • @calumx
      @calumx  Před 4 lety +23

      At the time I bought it I had very little money as a result of a ton of factors (travel, starting a business, moving, failing, etc.). Minimalism allowed me to save money at a faster pace. Especially not having to buy a bed. And as time has gone on I am on excellent financial footing. So it is not direct but minimalism is conducive to saving.

      Can you at least fold it in half? This way it could partially air out sometimes? When I change the sheets on mine, I fold it in half and turn on a fan. I let it air out for a couple of hours before putting the clean sheets on it. I also fold it in half when I travel so there is air around it. I flip mine in both directions (top to bottom or side to side) pretty regularly too. Good luck with yours.

    Waterproof covers for futons/mattresses keep out all the sweat and skin cells from getting into your futon/mattress. I have been told that fully covering a futon/mattress in a waterproof cover is not good for it, as it makes it really hot to sleep on. I will attest to this, covering the whole futon made it very hot to sleep on, but also... my cat peed on the floor one day while I was moving from one house to another, and it soaked my mattress and I had to get a new one. I think the best solution for me, and also in general for ventilation, is to have a slightly raised platform, the most ideal of which would be a tatami mat, and a waterproof cover for only the top of the bed. Under the waterproof cover I also put a memory foam layer. Sleeping on a futon changed my life. I had such a hard time sleeping before, and was never comfortable. I also struggled with sleep apnea before and felt much better after switching to a futon. Currently I am sleeping on a mattress until my new futon arrives, and even though it is a great mattress, I am not comfortable while sleeping.
