  • This week Jirard dusts off the PSP to go back and experience the game that started it all: Final Fantasy 1. After now almost 30 years, is this influential game worth olde school grinding?

    About The Game:
    Final Fantasy is a science fiction and fantasy media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, and developed and owned by Square Enix (formerly Square). The franchise centers on a series of fantasy and science fantasy role-playing video games (RPGs). The eponymous first game in the series, published in 1987, was conceived by Sakaguchi as his last-ditch effort in the game industry; the title was a success and spawned sequels.

    I'm pretty sure I never would have completed the 8-form boss. Good googly woogly! I think a lot of us tend to view games as if there were no internet. Like, would this be worth it if the game was all I had? It's a hard situation to imagine these days. Banjo-Kazooie, now that was a completion bonus right there.

  • @WarpScanner
    @WarpScanner Před 8 lety +201

    I sort of disagree that unique classes or the like should be locked behind a completionist bonus. That essentially guarantees that less than 0.1% of the player base will ever touch the content placed there.

    • @BigCowProductions
      @BigCowProductions Před 8 lety +11

      +Warp Scanner Well, if the company does it right, it is done as extra content. It's like a new game mode with special things. If you have a fully fleshed out game with the dynamic of those classes working together, you can then add a new set of classes that have a correlation of their own.
      This wouldn't be like developers nowadays adding endings as DLC and crap like that. It would be a totally extra feature, and also celebrating the completionist type fans too.
      It isn't bad to add a bonus for people that want to do the extra stuff for it, I think. As long as your main game isn't found wanting of content in the process, that is.

    • @WarpScanner
      @WarpScanner Před 8 lety +15

      Generation 0(~TBC Productions) The problem is, as he points out in the video, that doing this completionist thing for this particular game wasn't fun.
      Anything that adds to the game mechanics themselves would behind a wall of unenjoyable grinding that a lot of folks would be on the outside looking in. And once they got it, they'd be too sick of the game to use it anyway.
      I get where he is coming from, he feels cheated. But that's because he insists on 100% every game, even games that probably shouldn't be 100%'d unless you are an utter fanatic of it.
      Of course, he's based this entire series on being a completionist. So he's sort of trapped himself. And I really do think being so insistent on 100%ing the games he plays is having a toll on him and his enjoyment.
      I myself only insist on just completing the main story of any game I start. And even that measly insistence can take a toll on me.

      Sonic the Hedgehog When you say vba, do you mean gba? The gba version of the game is basically the same as the psp version of the game but with worse graphics, sound, and a bit less content. Also I have played through the nes version as well, and it's as hard as the ps1 version of the game but with more glitches and more mistranslations. The reason that I like the ps1 version the most is because it stays loyal to the nes version's difficulty well fixing all the problems that Square couldn't back when the game was first released.

Yeah, there are less jokes, but i see that as more of a change of pace than a downside. If you focused just on the parts Greg added to the show, then you will most likely be caught off guard with how on track jirard stays. If Greg comes back then we can welcome him with open arms. I'm really late to mention this, but all of the random names you can get for party members are references to other Final Fantasy games. And coincidentally enough, Jirard's entire party here is references to FFVI. Duncan is Sabin's master, Gungho is a friend of Strago, and Duane is half of a couple of teenagers in love from the town of Mobliz.

  • @PhrozenFox
    @PhrozenFox Před 7 lety +16

    In regards to random encounters:
    I grind the first dungeon of the game until I'm capable of defeating the first boss without having to Heal more than once or twice (9/10 FF games have a boss that counterattacks you in the first dungeon. Mist Guardian FF4, Scorpion Mech FF7, etc so that's the "twice")
    and then once I'm done that, I never run from a battle.
    This makes it so I never have to grind. I'm always just a couple steps ahead of the first boss due to pacing, and rarely near the end I will have to grind a little bit more just to be able to beat the last boss.

    Great review Jirard. I appreciate how much respect you have for the history of the series and its roots. I'm personally not a huge RPG fan, but I do enjoy playing one from time to time, and I plan to play through all the Final Fantasies.
    I started with VII after I'd heard how amazing it is and I was underwhelmed (all the hype ruined it for me and made me expect more than I got) although I did beat it, started VIII and stopped when the story started getting really confusing, and started X but stopped as soon as I was able to play blitzball as much as I wanted (sank all my time into that and then lost interest in the main game). After that I decided I wanted to play all the games in the series in order so I could see how it grew with each entry, and I believed that would help me appreciate the later games more and make me want to finish them when I catch up to them. I have I - IX on the Playstation (except III on the DS since it wasn't given a PS remake for no apparent reason), as well as X, X-2, and XII.
    At this point I've played through I - III (just finished III tonight actually!) and I'm really enjoying them so far. I love seeing the series grow as they implement new elements and gameplay features, as well as writing more involved stories with each successive game. I'm excited to experience the more popular entries like VI and IX. Next up: Final Fantasy IV!

    My favorite Final Fantasy experience was the sixth(or third for some people), which luckily, was the same game that introduced me to the series, but if it were up to me to introduce people to the entire series, I say they should start with the seventh, as a test of skill and a formal introduction to it all.

    • @trod146
      @trod146 Před 5 lety

      Willie touset 7 is too different from almost all others. Its not a good intro. 6 is usually the best intro, then they can choose any of the 5 before or they can play 8,9 or 10. Depending on which way they wanna go lvling and combat. 7 has similar lvling and combat, but graphics are too different to then go back to pixels. 6 allows that transition to older graphics more tolerable. 3D to 2D pixels will make most everyone quit. 7 is best after playing 6 and a few others to get a feel for final fantasy in general. Then they can fully enjoy the amazing story and hate on 8 and 9 for having crappy stories. And hate on 10 for being too convoluted and taking way too long to develop any sort of story progression.

    Having just played this game myself, I have to say...this game is iconic and I love what it did, allowing Square to exist and creating a franchise that has gone on to create much greater games later on. This game I enjoyed and I thought it was fun...but it definitely has some flaws. Sure, this was one of the first RPGs of its kind and so that does make it more impressive in a way, that they were able to make it work, but some of the designs would not be used today. Like having so many dead ends and empty rooms that you have to plow through endless monsters to see. Or having death trap rooms where each tile is a guaranteed fight...and the room has nothing in it. The conveyance is vague too. The player gets so little info on how to progress and sometimes you need to search to figure out what to do. The story is, at the time, much bigger than other games, but the player doesn't hear a ton of it until a chunk into the game, adding to the vagueness. I'm surprised that I can play a game with so many definite flaws and yet enjoy it so much.
    Also, why did you call the crystals "orbs"? They are very definitively crystals. Iconic-ly crystals.
