  • It’s clear that the NBA is where big money is, but what if the only role a player can get is to warm the bench? Europe and more specifically the EuroLeague has been a popular landing spot for NBA athletes in such positions.
In this video, we delve into the financial landscapes of both leagues and discuss whether an NBA benchwarmer could earn more in the EuroLeague.

A lot of NBA fans including myself were surprised that Mirotic chose to go back to Europe after having a successful time as a volume shooting PF in the NBA. He would have probably earned 15 million a season or possibly more (considering Duncan Robinson is paid 18m for being a 3-point specialist) if he'd stayed in the NBA and had an important role on many teams. However, he gets to be the highest paid player in Europe, play for and live in Barcelona as opposed to some random city in the US and be a superstar rather than an important role player and I can understand why he chose to go back.

The biggest advantage in NBA is earning potential. As a benchwarmer in the NBA, yes you'd maybe make less, but if you can develop and earn your spot in an NBA rotation, your earning potential skyrockets. There are tons of benchwarmers who got shots for significant play time and then got huge paydays that go well well beyond Euroleague's top salaries. FRED Vanvleet, Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson and Duncan Robinson are just a few examples, but there are so many. In Euroleague your earning potential is capped around $5 million per year, no matter how great you play.
I'd also add that NBA you have potential for a much higher potential for media attention and potential for lucrative sponsorship opportunities, access to generally better facilities and other perks of being in the NBA like team sponsorships and team staff support. I don't know too much of the Euroleague lifestyle, but I'm assuming basketball professional do not garner nearly as much recognition or have as many perks as NBA players.
Once again, this is just potential opportunity, obviously if you never end up cracking a rotation it's probably worse financially than being a Euroleague star, but simply having the opportunity to crack a rotation and have massive on the court and off the court earning potential would make it well worth sticking in the NBA.

Nice video and good work you have done, but remember you had your review based on salaries that are completely different in each European country... For example Greece up to 2010 had alot of good American players and the presidents of the teams were giving alot of money, but about then Greece went in financial crisis and up until now still is.. the Taxes from about 10-15% have risen to 40% and teams give extra in the contract a house , car etc etc, this is done this way for tax reasons (i am from Greece and i know that). In the contract maybe a player gets 1-2 mil. per year but they get extra a signing bonus, which could be alot of money, those money dont have the same percentage of tax because are considered as bonus and they pay much less there..so even the salaries that you found are not the money that a team has to give to have a player.. If you look in Turkey if i remember well the tax is about 15% on everything, so they dont have to risk a big bonus and then have a player that has taken tons of money on bonus-signing fee and doesnt play well, most of money is in contract so if someone is sold you dont have so many expenses ... OF COURSE your video was about the players income not the teams expenses but what i meant is about the same with taxes and salaries is the same in many countries in europe ...Most countries maybe have the same currency the euro but taxes and way things work are completely different..Thanasis Antetokoymbo used to play for Panathinaikos before he came to NBA and really was a superstar... Do you know that his family didnt have alot of money when they first came from Africa and Thanasis was given to another family to grow up??because his family was very poor, thats why you can find videos saying that Giannis many times used to sleep in the stadium this is truth 100%...

Also, NBA has retirement package if I'm correct. That might be a topic for another video.

For NCAA undrafted elite players or second rond draft, or for some bench players hwo have spent few years in NBA and for who NCAA wasn't so far, it could be more interesting to go to Euroleague or Europe Cup.
The question is for players who have to choose beetween draft and europe teams not qualified for Euroleague.

Good analysis. As an agent who works with pro players in Europe I’d say they the potential earnings is a big factor. If you’re on a minimum contract in the NBA you have the ability to play your way onto an 8 or even 9 figure deal. It’s also possible to earn that kind of money as a role player in the NBA whilst in Europe you’ve got to be a go-to-guy which doesn’t mesh with most players games.

  • @mjwbulich
    @mjwbulich Před rokem +9

You forgot one important thing. If you make the leap from bench warmer to role player and stay in the league for 8 or 10 years you will make way way more money in the NBA. Play solid defense and hit open jumpers and in half a decade you're making $7M a year. Going to Europe is basically conceding that you will never be anything in the NBA. That or you're hoping the extra playing time in Europe will up your game and get you back to the Association. That's why most Americans that play abroad have washed out of the league. They tried and failed to make it and now they just need a paycheck.

It strongly depends. Not every US benchwarmer can be a starter in a top european team. Being generally bigger, faster and jumping higher helps, but won't make wonders in a slower and more team oriented game. On the other hand - many european key players ended up being average catch and shoot dummies because they could'nt bulk up and adapt to a faster and more physical game. For me being important is slightly more than being well paid. But I can see it is a hard decision since you may not get another chance in US.

get in the NBA is already super hard, if you have a chance to stay in a team for lets say 5 years so it is usually easier as safe to stay. But if you feel like the window is about to close soon, like being in the bench with 5 mins of garbadge time and no one is noticing your stats, then just take a risk.
reminder, Euroleague is a mens league! They play hard, is not like any benchwarmer in the nba would be a star. That’s why feel annoyed seeing good franchises like the Pacers, Jazz, and Blazers out winning products consistently each season even if they are rebuilding, but these star players, who claim they want to win, choose lifestyle over winning teams unlike in Europe, where players in football, choose passion and history of a club over the superficial ness of these NBA players.

Truth is football is king in the world and lots of that is that it is popular in almost every continent even North America in Mexico.
Basketball may never reach the popularity of football worldwide, but I think it can be much closer than other sports. American football will always be an American thing and baseball is almost the same outside a few countries.
Baskwtball already has a good following in Europe even in big football countries.
I feel like the European leagues should invest more money into the sport and bring it lore coverage.
I also believe America should help European/foreign leagues and help bring talent there.
I honestly think NBA/ Foreign leagues should try to model the player market like in football. It wouldn’t be like transfers or signings, but I believe NBA should open the trade market to European teams.
I don’t know if this is possible or if NBA would agree with it, but if an NBA team wants a player there, they can offer some compensation and maybe a young player who hasn’t gone much playing time in exchange for a player like Micic or Musa in Madrid.
Again don’t think NBA teams would want to do it and players might not agree wanting to get traded to Europe or even outside Europe, but if they are an end of the Bench guy that most likely won’t get time, I believe Euroleague would be so much better than even the G-League.
Also if a player doesn’t want to play for a European team, they can’t o the buyout thing like in the NBA and give that money for the European club. Hope this kind of make sense.

Also I personally would rather play in Europe to have a shot for the World Championship instead of just playing in "the Best league in the world" for just a domestic nba championship. World Cup seems bigger to me as it's about the whole World

Would definitely go to Europe. If anything just to get out of the USA…. It’s screwed up over there

The reality is that they won't play for Europe teams unless they play for a national team

Who starts to play basketball with dream about warming the bench one nice day in NBA❓❓❓

Does it really matter where any of these guys play? Literally in any market, they are making 10-1000 times what an average person makes. If a person made $50k/year playing professional ball in Guatemala, they could live 4 times as well as an average Guatemalan, and still save at least $2k every month... It feels to me, like if a guy did that for 20 years, and went down in the Guatemalan record books, he will still be doing just fine financially, by any measure used in the world, having never even played in a major league, and he's probably not even 40 yet.
