- Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make a knife lanyard knot. Easy step by step instructions for tying a knife lanyard knot in this simple guide.
The diamond knot is an ornamental knot. It is knot #787 in the Ashley Book of Knots (AboK). It is also known as the sailor’s knife lanyard knot, the marlin spike lanyard knot, the bosun’s whistle knot and the friendship knot.
The knot is tied by joining two ends of a single cord with a carrick bend to form a loop in the middle. The ends are then wrapped around the outside of the loop and up through the center of the knot.
Use/Application
It is often used as an ornamental part of a knife or tool lanyard. It can also be used to make paracord jewelery, as a decorative part of a paracord survival bracelet or key fob or zipper pull. It is often used as a paracord bracelet end knot. If you pull the slack out and completely close the loop you can form a button knot (the chinese button knot), which can be used as a functional button. Sailors used to tie the knot with a large loop and use the loop as a necklace with the knot as an attractive pendant.

This is the best Diamond Knot tutorial I've taken. My tying has gotten better because of that. Thank you!
Such a neat way to tie this most useful knot using your hand as a former.
Not only the least confusing of many tutorials, it was actually quite easy to follow and understand. Thank you...
Absolutely the beat, clearest and simplest way to tie the diamond knot! Thank you.
Sorry, I got lost. The Weavers of Eternity video was easier to follow...just my opinion :-)
I humbly disagree, this was terrible for me.
Hey thanks for this video! I got some paracord for my son’s school project. Needed to learn a quick single strand knot with a loop for a handle and this is exactly what I needed. It’s a good clean and strong knot that won’t come undone! Thanks! A video as good as this will last for many more years to come 👍
Thanks, buddy. With your help, I tied the first knot in my life. It remains a little practice, and my knife will get a lanyard. 👍

The best description of a lanyard knot I have been able to find on youtube, thank you!
This is the best tutorial of the diamond knot on CZcams. The video is done slowly explaining the process instead of going quickly through it assuming the watcher already knows how. Well done with much thanks.
Thanks. Been trying this one for hours
So many positive comments I decided to give it a go. So clear video and voice it worked first time. Going to go and follow your channel. Thanks.
This was the first video of yours I ever saw and it's still my favorite. One bonus to your method is that it looks like a magic trick -- pull the ends and a knot appears! I use it at craft shows and it is always a crowd - pleaser. Thanks!
I'm glad. Thanks so much for sharing with me.

You Sir are a bad ass
Cheers Mate!
That's approximately 31 and half inches for us American blokes. 😁
i love your canal
Looks exactly like a chotki (prayer rope) knot.
Why do I feel like Homer Simpson trying to build a bbq when I finish 😂, but seriously thanks for the video 👍
Thanks, bro!
This works with 80 cm of line, so you have two short strands, how do you do it at the end of a long line?
Thank you
It`s the best way to tie a diamond knot.
Why oh why with all these lanyard knot videos no one ties it on a knife, which is it's purpose? Do you all tie these off the knife and then do a lark's head with a bite over the eye? I don't just need to know the knot, I need to know the application!
My guess is that the eye of the knife replaces the middle finger?
I tried to tie this on a thin stranded wire to get a bit sturdier thin loop. It did not come out quite as nice and regular but it seems solid enough. Some of the loops went to the bottom so had to turn the knot like halfway inside out. I wonder how short can you cut the loose ends for it to remain reliable.
Structurally, is there any difference between the diamond knot and the chotki knot used in prayer ropes? I know the method of tying them is different, but the end result seem very similar.
would it be reasonable to put two of these in? one at the end with the handle to prevent the loop spinning and then another at the very end to finish the strap/lanyard?
I really need to know how to take a fixed pocket knife fob/lanyard, and resize it because the loop that attaches to the knife is way too long, how can I make it much smaller to my knife? Will I have to cut it and retie a knot? Please I really need someone's help here I've searched CZcams ty.
This is a footrope knot which is a diamond knot inside out. If you roll the crown down over the wall you end up with a diamond knot
This is a 3l X 4b Turks head made with 2 cords
Excellent demonstration, the other video I watched was pitiful, no verbal instructions and the music was worse than the knot tying.
👍🏻👍🏻 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That's an easy one to remember. :-/
Ditto
I think it's a Gordian knot.
took me 3 fucking tries but i got it thank fuck
Your name is genius
i dont know what im doing wrong!!! mine's looking like a car accident!!!

Third tutorial and mine still is not the same. I believe something is missing.
EAR/ONS brought me hear
Me too
Me too...wanted to see how hard it was....anyone wonder more about his use of this?
Deborah Vercammen I wonder more about where he learned it...because I know what he used it for. Lmao...kidding ya...
We all know what he used it for...however, yes...where did he learn it? Back then it was probably not as easy to have this experience...do Boy Scouts use this? Do paratroopers in the army? Was it something that was used in a particular job? Navy, boating?
Deborah Vercammen I'm thinking Boy scouts...or Navy
Great tutorial! But an overrated knot. 1. Difficult to do. 2 Hard to untie. 3 strands become uneven and the strain on the rope depends on one strand instead of two. 4. It takes a long time to do so you are not helped in a stressful situation. 5 Hard to remember. 6. Rarely turns out great. 7 Easy to make a mistake and get it wrong. Anyway, thx for the upload. I will put this in my "tucker bag".
I got stressed Out ... Trying the double ... Diamond knot... 😅 Trying that this one be more easy...
@plywoodcarjohnson5412 really? This is one of the first knots I learned to tie reliably. And it is a very good stopper knot. Maybe give it another try or maybe knottying isn't your thing.
Some Bullshit. I can't do this
It took me many tries to get it right myself. It depends a lot on what you're using to make the knot. I'm using a leather bootlace for my scout uniform so it was really tricky to get it to lay correctly. After about an hour of practice I'm able to do it without the video.

This is the worst showcase of how to tie this knot I have ever seen!
I can not imagine why it takes over 2 minutes to show how to tie this knot. People can pause this video, but buddy, it's really hard to skip your fiddling with the rope. I'm off to find a diagram, because this is infuriating.
Bad video
