    Lil Dicky is so aware of the current cliches in the current rap scene that he's able to satirize it with his songs and become the voice of the common bro. Making fun of himself and the industry at the same time. Also his beats go hard as fuck.... cant wait for the new album.

    I know I'm older than most Lil Dicky fans (45) but this is exactly how things went down back in my day too. If you don't hit the bar after the first shots you aren't going out, someone's puking in the bathtub, and there is always the one guy that is not as drunk as everyone else that gets mad that you didn't go out. Back then we were playing Mortal Kombat 2 or GoldenEye on Super Nintendo instead of Guitar Hero though.

  • @chriswellz5993
    @chriswellz5993 Před 8 lety +603

    To the guy that said this was frat rap. I tell you one thing. I love hip-hop. You know what hip-hop is? it's a culture of self expression. That's where rap comes from. Sure, it also came from the oppression and wanting to be a voice. But we all know hip-hop has evolved far from that. The core is expressing yourself. And rap derived from poetry, which consequently meant to express yourself on who you are. His rap is about rapping what he lives or what he thinks about. Everything he talks about on this song people do in the club or at home. "Regular fucking people". That's not frat rap, that's life rap.

    • @911Ranger1
      @911Ranger1 Před 8 lety

      +Chris Wellz Rap didn't derive from poetry, but they do share many similarities.

    • @chriswellz5993
      @chriswellz5993 Před 8 lety +15

      911Ranger1 Well, agree to disagree. Many similarities is due to the tool of poetry being applied to music. Rap Hip-Hop started in the late 60s and early 70s. For a little insight: In the late 60s, all these kids that were the fallout kids of the black nationalist movement, civil rights, poor white peoples movement, puerto rican nationalist movement. They had street gangs in Bronx, NY. These kids during that time were like "We're gonna come up with our own peace treaty." Decided they were not going to engage in violence. The zulu nation was born out of that. So these kids got together and decided to do part jams as an alternative to violence. Poetry is self expression. Rap within that was self expression and talked about things they were oppressed by. Poetry is the exact same thing. They both come from pain, misery and hardships. The elements in how they were first used was word play and creating works of art withing our own voice. Example: You can't deny when you hear a deep verse from a rap artist and say "That was so damn poetic."... There is a reason it is. The foundation of how hip-hop was built is due to the same motives, aspirations and experiences that poets go through.
      But I will say that there is a big difference between Rap and Hip-Hop... Young Thug isn't Hip-Hop, he's commercial rap. Not a poet.

    • @911Ranger1
      @911Ranger1 Před 8 lety +4

      Damn dude you know your shit! I'm impressed. I was aware of all that, but I'm glad you wrote it out. Hopefully others take the time to read it.
      Anyway, I think we mostly agree. Saying "the tool (though I prefer the word devices here) of poetry being applied to music" is a great way to put it. Your closing statement about the foundations of hip-hop is spot on too. If, in your original comment, you had written "derived from poetic PRINCIPLES" or "from the same THEMES as poetry," I would've agreed wholeheartedly. The way I read it though, seemed like you were saying someone took a poem and simply put a beat behind it, thus creating rap. This is wrong. The story is far more complex. The content of MCing (1/4 parts of hip-hop culture as I suspect you know) is certainly derived from the things you mentioned, but the process is from Jamaican toasting, MCs giving props to their DJ's at Kool Herc's, and has even deeper roots found amongst various African-American musical styles. You were talking about the content, and I interpreted it as you referring to the process. My bad.
      Don't even get me started on that difference haha. I have a shirt that says Rap--Lies=Hip-Hop. I love it. But right, Nas=poet (or in hip-hop terms, MC), while Young Thug or any other one of those ignorant folks=rapper (or in hip-hop terms, whack). Of course, in conversation you can use MC and rapper or hip-hop/rap interchangeably unless you wanna be a prick and constantly correct, but one must stay cognizant of the difference. For anyone to lump a legend and that garbage together is like throwing away diamonds. It's blasphemy.

    • @chriswellz5993
      @chriswellz5993 Před 8 lety +4

      911Ranger1 Haha no problem bro lol. I appreciate it. And you're 1000% right. Couldn't more right. I couldn't have said it better myself. But yeah man, I'm a musician so it's my business to know these things. Been making music for 12 years. I love it. I'm from Detroit so you already know. Motown and stuff like that. I was a big Eminem fan when I was growing up. To see a white guy get that much love in rap made me smile. Plus since my mom is white and my dad is black, you should already know where my heart is when it comes to race and harmony and all that other shit. Haha. But yeah, totally agree with you. Rap and Hip-Hop is so different from each other. There was a dude name Michael Render that touched the subject I was speaking on. Basically what I said was virtually verbatim to what he said. It's amazing that a lot of people don't know the history behind hip-hop.

    • @911Ranger1
      @911Ranger1 Před 8 lety +3

      +Chris Wellz Thank you. And yeah you gotta know where it all comes from--regarding music and life in general in my opinion. Hip-hop is a culture whereas rap is the musical portion of that culture commercialized. I don't demand that even the casual fan knows all this, but if you wanna call yourself a Head it's required. But yeah, Eminem was my "gateway drug" into hip-hop. Once I got hooked on him the rest is history haha. Also, I think I found that Michael Render (aka Killer Mike, right?) interview and plan to watch both parts.
      Anyway, goodluck with your music! You're lucky you're able to do what you love. Stay true and listening to that real shit. Peace

      Trippy Killa funny how you are TRYING to sound smart, yet you have no arguments backing up your statements. Those were ALL relevant comments. 1. it DOES matter, if you hood hop, you'd know this, Clearly you don't, so i assume that you have ever left mommys house.
      2. You seriously sound like you come from weak ass place if you're not willing to represent your friends, family and community. you sound ashamed of home 3. Represent where you are from because the people you know, the things you've done, the money you make, etc. is alll worth being proud of.
      4. I didnt know you spoke for Lil' Dicky. Dude is a fan, and tellin an artist that uk listens to him, yet, you seem to jump on the hate-train to say "who gives a shit?" the answer: nobodies, like YOU
