    Tip #1
As a kid, my dad would tell me to be quiet as we approached a spot to fish; otherwise, I'd scare off all the fish, and we wouldn't catch anything.
I thought he just wanted me to stop talking, which was probably part of the reason, but over the 3 decades of fishing since, I've learned that sounds definitely spook fish and make them harder to catch.
So I always try to be as quiet as possible, whether I'm walking along the bank, pulling up in a boat, or casting my lure.
    Silence is your Friend.
    Tip #2
I went to college to study wildlife management, which meant I spent a lot of time learning how weather, seasons, and people affect animals.
This is always true when bass fishing.
The fish will be in a specific mood and location based on their environment, and no single factor can determine whether they're in an eating mood or not or exactly where they'll be that day.
Baitfish, weather, season, water temperature, water current, and water clarity are all factors that anglers must learn to adapt to in order to be successful.
Understanding Bass Biology will make you a better angler because you'll know what lures to use and where to use them.
    Tip #3
My dad took me fishing one spring when the sandbass were spawning. We were getting a lot of bites and should have caught our limit, but for some reason, we both struggled to land them.
At the time, I didn't realize there were different fishing poles; I just thought some were expensive and some were cheap.
Now, I know there are many actions and powers of fishing rods. Which basically means how stiff and strong the rod is, you can check out my explanation of those two words here.
Had we been using fast-action medium power rods instead of slow-action medium power rods, we would have had a much easier time keeping fish on the hook that day.
Using the right gear for the job will help you catch more fish.
    Tip #4
One of the biggest mistakes most anglers make without ever realizing it is positioning.
Pros talk about boat positioning all the time, but correctly positioning yourself on the bank is also critical.
And one of the primary reasons for this is because of your shadow.
When your shadow goes over a fish, it will spook it, even when the water is dirty.
This is because moving shadows generally mean a predator is above the fish, so they swim off to find safety.
Always beware of where you're shadow is in relation to the fish you're trying to catch.
    Tip #5
My dad and grandpa taught me a lot about fishing when I was a kid. But I realize not everyone has a dad or grandpa interested in fishing, which I why I recommend finding a fishing mentor.
I rarely hear anyone talk about this in the fishing industry, but looking back on my life, having a mentor in every other area has helped me become exponentially better.
Reading articles and watching CZcams videos like the ones on this channel will help you become a better angler. However, having someone who's more advanced to take you fishing or go fishing with you will help you learn even faster.
Nothing beats time on the water learning for yourself, but having another angler to bounce ideas off of while you're fishing is also invaluable.
