  • Let's take a look at this Mercury grand Marquis that came in with a customer complaint of "no window washers." It is a quick diagnosis with a wiring diagram and the parts are on the way!

99% chance the wiper motor is full of water. The drain in the cowl likes to get clogged with leaves and the motor sits in a pool of water. You’ll know when you unplug the connector and it will start dripping. Definitely use a OEM motor. I tried a rebuild one from auto zone and it sounded like a dying giraffe. Always fun doing a job twice.

Had an old Chevy pickup with a bad switch, the wipers would run all the time unless I unplugged it under the hood. So when it starts to rain I would just pull over and plug in the wipers. I was much younger then.

Thanks for reminding me to change my washer fluid today in the big truck. The old crappy freightshitter runs washer fluid from under the bunk outside under the floor up to the firewall. Anything near 32° it freezes. Need to use the -30 stuff plus add alcohol. Feels like temp in the teens last night, watching snow come down now up here in the big cheese

"There's your problem; it's an over-computerized American car!" And for people who fix Tauruses (at least 2001's), if you ever get a code for ECM keep-alive power after having a/c compressor issues, check the a/c fuse in the underhood fuse block. The Ford genuises ran the keep-alive off that fuse! Big Kudos to Mr. O and SMA for sharing so much knowledge that I wish I had a garage to work in, just to take things apart and put them back together again!

I just (1 month ago) replace Wiper Control Module in my mom's 2009 Grand Marquis for same/similar reasons. In this case wipers came on by themselves, then to make maters worse....the washer pump came on-line and squirted my square in the face while checking.
First thought was multi-function switch on column, but after many you-tube videos (like yours) chased down the wiper control module.
Thanks for the videos as I learn a lot from you and other youtubers willing to share their time and experience.

Dorman Wiper motor: Fits perfectly, no problems, no soldering required, no angle grinder, nice connector. Then it runs slow as a snail. turns out it runs on 24V. Easy fix is buy and wire a second battery, change half of wiring of the car .... or even better ... sell the car and buy a RV, Bus or big truck that runs 24V power and install it there. Edit: People will complain anyways ...

Eric, you might be surprised the mfgs. have rethought the parts process and are very competitive with the aftermarket on a lot of items. I started going OEM whenever possible just to save comebacks and working for free as you are well aware of. A-one cardone was killing me and so is Dorman on a lot of items. Their products almost fit, but ALMOST kills us.

For me I leave it up to the customer. Give them the choice. Some want the factory look others are ok with the bypass fix. Give them the option that way if they don't know much about cars they can find a alternative and leave knowing that you are not money hungery because if they hear that it could have been done a cheaper way they don't think they are just a dollar sign to you.

I'd rather go gamble in Vegas b/c my chances are better. I will use the Dorman nylon fuel line repair kit & lines but I'm pretty sure somehow they'll screw that up also.

    • @roadkill5333

Hayward's Automotive Wow! Cardone. I did some L.I.M. gaskets on a 3400 Olds Silhouette van, where the last thing I had to remove to get to the lower manifold was the power steering pump. It was buried deep, had to be removed, and was almost 200k on an 01 model. I decided that since it was so deep, and since I had it out, I would put another one in. The part store only had a reman Cardone in stock. I got it, did the work, and upon the first test drive, THE PUMP WAS FAULY! Had to go all back thru to change it again. I even filed a claim with Cardone for the labor claim, but they refused. I won't buy another Cardone part again! Just like the DORMAN crap. Sometimes you have no choice. But if I do.......

Sam Rugtiv Because he knows better than wear carheart jackets with brass buttons on the cuffs,or a big brass zipper guarenteed to rip the paint. If anything,he polished the fender free. I would charge for that. Its not like he is working on Hundred thousand dollar vehicles. Fenders dont generally dont stand out like they used to. My Grandmother would go someplace else if she didnt see fender covers back in the day. Then again, you could feed a family of four off the top of a fender back then. You had to use a step ladder to reach the middle of the engine. I remember burning my knees resting them on the thermostat housing reaching behind the carb trying to get at the distributor so I could adjust the dwell. Yeah fun times.

2017 and people "still" complaining about over-complexity. If only you knew how much money and "over complicated" tech went into you watching this video and making this comment via a computer and the internet. The most complex car to date is child's play in comparison.

we are talking cars here not computers, what was wrong with a washer motor, some wire and a push button ?, did adding complexity improve the washers ?.

Actually, it did much the same way computers and the internet improved phone calls and letters.

If it's a MOSFET, ground side switching is easier.

    • @paulmoir4452
      @paulmoir4452 Před 6 lety

It's true of BJTs (NPN or PNP transistors) as well. Due to a quirk of physics with silicon, it's much easier to make a power NPN or power N channel MOSFET than it is to make it PNP or P channel. Which makes ground side switching the way to go with these devices. Well, nowadays you can get some pretty good PNP or P channel power switchers so it doesn't make a big difference, but old habits die hard.
