  • I got Scammed on Facebook and PayPal! My initial response was to forget the money
pull my tail between my legs and forget this episode. However, after thinking about it I realised that's exactly what the success of this scammers is build upon so I decided to do the opposite and try to recover my money, warn as many people as possible about it and make it more difficult for Facebook and PayPal scammers in the future. In this video, I explain how I went and how to not get scammed via Facebook and PayPal.
DISCLAIMER: In no way do I suggest the poor guy on the Facebook Profile Images is the scammer, the images are quite likely stolen from somewhere and used for malicious purposes.

Really appreciate the share, explained clearly and succinctly.
Banks & PayPal are all in the game together. I had someone use my ABN to invoice government departments, I went to the police, I rang St George bank because the scammers had an account at that bank, St George didn’t care, neither did the police. Over a 12 month period I received over 15 calls from the smart people following up on the scam invoice (I told them it’s a scam). I feel pain for the others who paid the invoice, because just in the 15 odd people who called me; the total was over $150k. Eyes wide open people.

First port of call in these situations is to contact your bank immediately, something similar happened to me, I contacted Commbank straight away and they put everything on hold until we went through the other steps.
They pretty much did everything for me and I got my $350 back, happy days!

Wonder if ANZ relented because it was just $90. Would have cost them far more to have person on phone 1 hour.
As an aside, I believe(d) paypal hold funds back from sellers for weeks/months to avoid scams. Not for friends payments though. Cheers.

Have you been scammed? Let me know in the comment section.
For clarification: I state in the video "all of his friends are from Africa and Black" what I mean is that it is highly unusual for a middle-aged Caucasian man living in Melbourne to only have people of colour friends residing in Kenya. Please don't make this a racist thing, skin colour for me has no connotation in any direction it's just a colour I have friends from many nations and with many different skin colours for me the person counts not the colour of their skin. If this offended anyone my sincerest apology is meant exactly as described above.

Hey my case is quiet complicated. I wanted Order digital concert tickets of a Facebook resaler. The seller has sent me all the proof of the tickets. She guided me the process of PayPal and almost led me to the “family friends” option. And I used “goods and services” by mistake luckily. Then she immediately said to cancel it right away only saying that the money won’t be sent to her account becuase it’s limited. It her only reason she would give me. And said that pay pal keeps the money and that it’s a lie “that’s why I should’ve used family friends” but no consumer protection is covered thorugh that. The money states it’s still pending on my dads bank account but says it’s already gone through on the pay pal account. Will pay pal issue a refund for me with a call?

I guess the reason PayPal declined your dispute was because you didn't have protection. Protection means that you CAN get your money back if something goes wrong. You have to pay for protection, and if nobody paid for it than how would PayPal make any money. I guess it's like a "premium" service they offer. If you got protected when making friends and family payments than everyone would be paying that way, meaning no money for PayPal. I guess you have to look out for people like that. always pay any transactions via credit card that way you can charge it back, not fukn rocket science

    • @AlloffroadAu
      @AlloffroadAu  Před 3 lety

Yep but this was kind of a private transaction so no credit card only PayPal but yes I agree CC is the safest for the customer for sure.

Using your credit card leaves you open for it being abused. That’s why in theory PayPal method is thought safer. It’s unfortunate PayPal’s support is poor. It’s still safer than Credit Card

ANZ is the worst bank to deal with on any level, the others aren't much better, NAB is useless. NAB allowed a customer of mine to be scammed out of $75,000. How? Customer made payments out of MYOB which had been hacked by changing vendor BSB details. NAB did not flag the BSB changes - they should have blocked them. Customer unfortunately has weak financial controls, and can't be told stuff like that, too pigheaded, so half his fault. Facebook marketplace is a no-go for me on any level, not even local pickup. Paypal as primary payment method not recommended. Only via E-Bay or whatever merchant you are actually purchasing from.

wow that is scary.... banks take where they can and do whatever they can get away with in my book..

@@AlloffroadAu I am with Westpac - if I pay money to a BSB/Account number that is not in my existing list, I have to put in my security key number before it will be paid. That's what NAB should have done for my customer, even though he made the payment via a batch file transferred from his accounting package. But a good financial control of always checking a payment BSB/Account against the very latest invoice from that vendor would have saved him from the bank's diabolical failure.

hm, a friend mentioned that someone may take offence, what I mean is that a middle-aged caucasian man living in Melbourne unlikely has only coloured friends residing in Kenya. Please don't make this a racist thing, skin colour for me has no connotation in any direction it's just a colour I have friends from many nations and with many different skin colours for me the person counts not the colour of their skin. If this offended you my sincerest apology is was meant exactly as described above.

Huusk sent me fake shipping info, after 3 weeks it still says "we are preparing your items" on the tracking numbers they gave me. I opened up a dispute with Paypal and got my money back straight away.
