Yo. It makes so much sense that they call their grenades extractors. If they really wanted to kill with their grenades, they wouldn't make them tick and blink. They're designed that way to keep enemies moving and potentially flush them out of cover. Hence, extractor.
Is that why they also call them "Bouncers"? Like a bouncer, it kicks the enemy out of an area so they're back out in the open?
@@Thlormby Nah I think that's literally because of how much they bounce.
Thebestusername1000 I haven’t seen them bounce, more like rolling
@@Thlormby A good example is when you throw them on a wall, they'll bounce off and additionally bounce a bit of a distance on the ground.

So true. The sound is really amazing in this game. I remember playing this with 5.1 surround sound with the sub woofer placed under my desk so when I would use the grenade on the SMG the explosion would create this massive gush of air from the subwoofer. really cool how they kind of speak like the hl1 grunts sometimes, all disjointed and robotic. they are after all an evolution of the grunt enemy basically.
The same code is used to form sentences as in HL1. Nothing has changed, but it just sounds better for the overwatch since they have surgically implanted voice synthesizers.
I don't know if you already knew this by now, but their beta voicelines we're just vocoded HECU Grunt voicelines
I never realized how well designed the voices and call outs were. It is a shame since the overall game design compromises it.
It seems like their AI and voices were made for a slower and more methodical tactical game and yet in the game itself you run around fast and kill them quickly, barely giving them a chance to show their prowess.
The one moment when I felt the game's level design approached its potential was midway through the missile-silo, when there are two parallel tunnels, and heavy things like engine-blocks to throw around. That's one spot where tue AI could actively box me in, and where I could attack with physics without a blatant OH LOOK AT THIS HUGE SAW BLADE or UH-OH, BARRELS.
They need more health. It's as simple as that. That's all Minerva Metastasis does to them and it tricked everyone into thinking the mod author tweaked their AI.
517342 The main issue, was many of the methodical ai features were cut or limited, with some features being in the code (i.e custom cover animations, where they would peek from walls and barriers to fire them crouch again, differentiating as each would reload), there was also to be formation and roles played as well, where a commander would signal each soldier where to go and stay or to move up on him, in the early game métropolice were to engage in an “arrest”
movement where they would aim their gun at you whilst another would try and detain you
@@ionbing2884 Yeah. When replaying HL2 and its episodes, I tweaked the text files a bit to give the AI more health, more damage, and give myself more damage taken and less ammo and magazine capacity for weapons. It was like playing a whole new game, one that was actually a challenge to complete. Although in parts where you have to escort AI companions, the difficulty really ramped up since they just couldn't deal with the extra health and damage the enemies had. Especially the part where you have to escort Father Grigori through the graveyard, he just kept dying because zombies had like 200 hp and 150 melee damage. He just couldn't deal with those numbers.
@@endhimrightly3408 The HECU soldiers in original HL1 are not a challenge. They sometimes blow themselves up. The only reason they give the impression of challenge is that they fire their under-slung grenade launchers.
To all wanting a more challenging and otherwise improved HL2 experience: get MMod. It's the bomb.

I like how they tried to recreate the HECU Grunt radio chatter in Half-Life 2.
Personally, it sounds 10x better AND cooler.
It fits the combine better than the HECU grunts, since the combine overwatch soldiers actually have voice modulators surgically implanted into them. Therefore, the structure in the code of how dialogue sentences are formed perfectly complements them. It feels more authentic than the HECU grunts.

Yeah i just come back here after watching some cop training roleplay and i was like "wtf they sound exactly like combine soldiers".
The developers put a lot of effort in Half Life 2
at around 6:46 when they say Ghost Two they're not referring to a unit they're actually abbreviating the term "ground team" with phonetics
Ghost Two actually refers to Gordon Freeman, as Ghost on its own is one of several names used for air units.
@@RescoeZ they're saying it in that order because they delivered Freeman, and ghost is merely a codename based on a coded phonetic alphabet. In special operations ground units are frequently codified as Golf Tango+[unit callsign] while air units will frequently be called by callsign only without numerals as they are often only 1 vehicle per code word subdivision to denote varied CAS platforms
@@reallydontlikethem I actually think ghost two refers to Gordon because in the cut HL Alyx soldier audio, there’s a line that says “Overwatch, Freeman 3 delivered”, with Freeman 3 referring to the player.

As of an update in September 2019, Combine soldiers use their pain and injury call out sounds again.
Does this have something to do with the AI take cover when getting shot ?
@@mredgeworth4428 yeah like when metrocops are injured. The first injury (if it doesn't nearly kill them) they'll report they're still going, then when near death they'll call out and try to take cover.

5:23 Repeating "flash flash flash" made it kinda funny and more believable that they are humans.
And I like that while alot of their humanity has been lost, they still retain some form of emotion that wasn't scrubbed out.
Notice how when you're on low health they cut the professionalism and jargon and straight up just say "Affirmative, we got him now." Or "That's it, wrap it up."
i heard on highway 17 under bridge
One cool thing I found while perusing the voice files is how they handle numbers. By combining clips together, you only need 30 or so voice clips to say any number possible. 1-19 are unique, but past that it's just multiples of 10 up to 100. For example, 125 is "one" + "hundred" + "twenty" + "five"
Awesome dude. Now I can finally see the text.
Nice touch adding in some hurt lines as well. Makes the combine seem more militaristic and not zombies
I can understand why Valve took out the pain sounds but I think they should have at least left the minimum damage lines in. The "Target ineffective" line is probably my favourite, nothing like your enemy saying "I barely felt that".

yea same. The algorithm is too good.
Combine Overwatch always seemed so bland to me before I found these videos.
They're a lot more complex than you think, they have cut lines of code that make them much more deadly. Even increasing their health actually makes them use their abilities more.
@@elektra81516 There's also a failure to use certain markers in levels that would let them use their more advanced tricks. Really, this is part of why FEAR's AI was remembered as being so amazing. They employed a HL1 trick (having the soldiers have a lot of situation-responsive lines) with greater fluency while also making sure the AI guys and level guys were working close together so that the AI could make the best use of the space it was in.
There are parts of HL2 where they obviously did this (for example, when you raid the Civil Protection hardpoint early in the street battles), and parts where they didn't.
it's funny how hl2 is kind of sci-fi, yet radios are inaudible
Well they're not meant for Gordon so I doubt thay it would be clear for him
that's a damn good point.
I guess you could explain around it that Gordon's suit picks up the signal but can't quite adjust the frequency so it ends up distorted? lol nevertheless I like it this way, sounds intimidating as it was intended instead of John giving a shoutout to Tim over Overwatch radio in ABSOLUTE CRYSTAL CLEAR voice "so heeeyy, how's your day, buddy?".

Been watchign these videos adn tbh I am shocked how much thought went into the combine. For the longest time I thought they were inferior to the hecu soldiers but these guys seem really well thought out and such. This kinda makes me want to play through a hl2 game again. Not sure which one though.
they are inferior in the sense that they have way less hit points and are programmed to miss very often if the player has low health. They also run slower. It's a shame, cause it's kinda fun how eager the game is to kill you in HL1 compared to 2, which seems like they want you to feel invincible.
It honestly amazes me how much detail Valve put into even the smallest parts of this game. They could have easily just had the soldiers spouting incoherent generic military terms or, even more lazily, have just made the soldiers make a bunch of static computer sounds and it really would not have been noticed by anyone playing as combat goes fast enough that you have no time to intake and understand what the soldiers are saying. But no Valve had to take the time creating their own sub-language for the soldier dialog that featured completely fictional code words, phrases, and names that all were coherently spoken in nature and relayed to exactly what the soldiers were doing or what the player was doing.
It makes me wonder if they finished the game in like 2002 and just spent the rest of the development time doing random shit like this. I mean it did pay off.
no, in fact the game was supposed to release in 2003, and they heavily rushed it for a late 2004 release
