"Upon us all, a little rain must fall."
George Harrison of the Beatles lamented that Zeppelin had no ballads... so of course they made a helluva one.

Dude, that must be one of those fake rock legends, i mean, it doesn't make no sense at all
Led had Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Thank You, Tangerine and Going to California before they made The Rain Song
Or George just simply didn't listened to Led and said that based on nothing

Those sawing cello chords that graze your soul and the fat piano chords that make any defense indefensible, those untouched are beyond reach. When I want my cheeks drenched with warm tears of joy, I turn to this.

There is non concert footage in it. Short answer to all your questions about the possible meanings? The answer is YES! It is whatever it means to you. Zeppelin is always about mood/emotion. As I've mentioned to others, this song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time. It is my favorite song of theirs and always makes me cry with it's beauty.

      @@StillColour Since you asked.... :-)
I've heard this song a bazillion times and got the gist (I hope) without ever really analyzing or parsing the lyrics. I think the first time I tried to understand EXACTLY what was being said was while watching your video.
So, I just listened closely again and here are my conclusions:
-- The "protagonist"(?) was at a low point (his winter)
"I never thought it would ever go"
-- He found a new love and now is in figurative heaven (his spring and summer)
-- Yet, there is a sadness to the song, because:
-- 1) The love is so strong that it hurts
-- 2) Part of that "hurt" is the fear/acceptance that one day "a little rain must fall"
IOW, the "rain" most likely is a call back to the chill of winter.

Fun fact: George Harrison (of The Beatles, of course) once went to a party for John Bonham (in which everyone who attended ended up being thrown in a swimming pool - But that’s another story). He happened to ask Bonzo why it was that Led Zeppelin never seemed to do any ballads. Bonzo went and told Jimmy and Robert and they came up with this song, which reportedly uses some of the same chords that Harrison utilized in his song “Something”.
