I left Barnsley in '04, & there's been more changes from then, until when this was uploaded.

Nice to see that massive blue and white H from the old coop building as you went round roundabout, it always reminds me of travelling from my grandads on princess street back to Royston on a Sunday morning in his old Vauxhall cavalier. I always looked out for the big H for some reason

God that brought back some memories, I moved to Barnsley in 1988, my ex mother-in-law used to shop at Leo's every week and we had to register at St George's church for our wedding banns cos my husband lived at Pogmoor. Thank you for this. Can anyone remember the pub at the bottom of the hill before the Alahambra was built, had a right weird name, Gingleboy, I think..

Brilliant, As the Town changes even more so through regeneration these videos will become ever more important for our history. Even now being in my early 30s watching back brings back so many memories. I spoke to you (briefly) a few months back in that wonderful historical Barnsley institution that is Mcdonalds haha. you may remember a burly Bearded biker asking if you were Dave Cherry. Anyway, Keep up the good work. I think it's fantastic what you are doing to make sure our history is remembered. Lay of the Big Mac's.
    Regards,
    Ian.

Nice job on the video .... I was born in Barnsley in 1956.... Grandparents were from Britannia Street off Sheffield road .... Lived out at Athersley North when it was a nice place before moving back to Park Road opposite the park gates in about 1970. Went to Race common Road school or "Ragged arse Rovers" as we called it back then... then later up to Charter school on Broadway ... .. some good memories' there on the video .... made me feel sad ... Left that part of the world in 1985.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I only moved to Barnsley in 1996 but recognised some of the old landmarks such as the supermarket that was Leo's, although I think it was a Co-Op in 96. Funny to see that you could drive through Peel Square.

    • @VonPunk
      @VonPunk Před 8 lety +2

+Nigel Martin Yes, Leo's was a Co-op owned brand too, I shopped there throughout the 80's, they rebranded it as a 'Co-op Pioneer' store in the mid nineties, not sure which year, maybe '93.

    • @tonisiret5557

I loved that Co-op, I think they shut it in 2003. Surprised the Blockbuster was still there too.

Good on you Don. Actually I am redoing this film next week. I have got some footage of the Alhambra theatre and the Ceag building. I will put in a feature of George Formby who played his ukelele banjo there for the first time. A lot of people on these sites are wanting it updating from this 5 year old film. I will include the old Tracky sheds which are on the original film. Sees you about Dave.

You would be surprised at the regeneration going on still to this day. It is quite the change. I haven’t lived there for five years but every time I come to visit my family I’m surprised and interested at what is changing. I remember the proposals for redevelopment back in the day but it all seems like it is finally happening. It’s good to see. Just think the spice zombies need to go and we should be golden.

This video needs another update it feels like the update from 91 to 2014 is less than the update from 2014 to 2023. Huge changes in town and a 90s to current day would see massive changes. Great videos though Dave

I used to go to Barnsley every week. Then they tore down the markets and changed everything. I stopped going. They did the same with Donny. Stopped going there an'all. Local markets have got torn down and the community spirits have almost been eliminated. Progress is not always progress!!

It was open as late as 1990, I remember going in there around June of that year. There was one on the opposite side of the road to Leo's, I can't remember that one being open.

God... and even this video is dated!
The big supermarket that was being built is an Aldi or a Liddl and acriss from it there's a KFC and the Blockbuster is now a Taco bell...
And you can't even go across the railway towards town centre either!
