同社の人気作品「魂斗羅」の続編。今回はサイドビューに加え、新たにトップビューのステージが盛り込まれている。操作は8方向レバーで移動、攻撃とジャンプに2つのボタンを使用するが、トップビューのステージでは、ジャンプボタンをスーパーシェルの発射に使用する。パワーアップはスプレッド、マシンガン、ボム、レーザーの4種類。全5ステージの2周エンド。映画風のオープニングが良い。
ストーリー:
西暦2634年12月謎のエイリアン軍団との戦いから1年、地球はその魔の手から逃れたかと思われていた。しかしエイリアンは復活していた!

The sequel to "Contra" - released a year earlier - is set in the year 2634 and begins with the disturbing news that the alien invaders from the first game - a race known as the Red Falcon - have renewed their attack on Earth and have infiltrated military bases and possessed most of the federation forces troops.
The heroes of the first games - Bill Rizer and Lance Bean - are once again called upon to defend the Earth and defeat the alien invaders.
Super Contra plays identically to its predecessor, with the usual mix of run-and-gun gameplay. The main difference is that the into-the-screen stages of the original Contra have been replaced with overhead stages. In addition, power-up icons are now represented as the actual weapons wielded by the characters, instead of the traditional letter-based falcon icons and players can now upgrade their weapon by picking it up twice in a row.
Another new gameplay addition is that players can now control the height of their jump; holding the joystick up and pressing the jump button allows for a higher jump; likewise the player can perform low jumps by holding down-right or down-left while pressing the jump button.

Super Contra was released in January 1988 in Japan
The subtitle of this game, Alien no Gyakushuu, translates from Japanese as 'Alien's Counterattack'.
This game is known outside Japan as "Super Contra [Model GX775]".
Note: The kanji on the title screen actually reads 'Kon To Ra', meaning 'Soul Big Dipper Gauze'. This is an example of 'gikun', where Japanese artists use the phonetic value of a character to determine the game's name and not the meaning of the character itself.
King Records released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Music From Super Contra & Ajax - K30X-7702) on March 21, 1988.

Contra in a nutshell:Spread gun is best gun.
How is machine gun useful?
Personally I always found the Lv. 2 machine gun more useful in Super Contra, since it can kill most bosses pretty instantly. The Lv.2 spread gun seems more like a downgrade in terms of firing speed since it goes from three spreads of three bullets to two spreads of five bullets. Even in the first arcade, the machine gun can be pretty OP if you can upgrade it with the R power-up, which was pretty hard to obtain in that version.
The "Spread Gun is the best weapon" meme really only applies to the two NES versions, since even in the later console entries it's been pretty watered down.

Arcade games are short, hence why the difficulty is higher than on the console versions.
Yeah, I heard the game was on a serious time crunch which made it come out with less content than it should have. Which is why the NES versions are usually considered superior.
I don’t know why 🤷🏻♀️ but I prefer the NES versions of Contra and Super.

My only complaint for the console versions is the graphic of Super Contra done half-assed since there's only one artist working on the game

That depends on what path you take. The story had two alternate universe both taking place after Contra 3. There is shattered soldier. Then there is Contra 4.
@@lordgargamel4124 Actually. Contra 4 and Shattered Soldier both take place in the same timeline. Contra 4 came before Hard Corps and after Hard Corps came Shattered Soldier.

Headcanon: In the Contra Rogue Corps AU, Bill and Lance failed to defeat the entirety of the Red Falcon Army since they were both either gone missing or considered classified. Instead, the remaining aliens and one of their strongholds were wiped out by the Vortex Cannon and we should already know the rest of the story.
Shattered Soldier and Contra 4 don't exist in my book
