Do you know where the least visited country in Europe is? It isn't perhaps a country you would expect to be a the bottom of this list, due to its location in the very heart of Europe and the Schengen zone. Traveling here is incredibly easy and the country is beautiful. The micro-state of Liechtenstein, in the heart of the Alps mountain range is a place most people, even Europeans, often forget exists. But despite it's size, travelling in Liechtenstein is far from boring, and the country punches far above its weight in terms of, sites to see, things to do, politics, economy, food, sport and much more. We really wanted to travel here and find out what this country was really like, how people here live and why it is one of the least visited countries in the World?

I am the only person I know who has visited Liechtenstein. As a boy, I learned of the country through postage stamps (I am still an avid collector). When I was in college, I went there for a day while staying in Austria. I came across a local, older man and he was *astonished* that anyone from the US would visit or even know about Liechtenstein. Thanks for the best video I've seen on this country! 👍👍👍
I was convinced the least visited country in Europe is Moldova but I guess it’s a close second to Liechtenstein. It’s interesting how completely different these countries are to one another. Nice video once again
Thank you so much, really appreciate it 🤗
I was thinking Moldova also.
Moldova is pretty much Romanians so I would imagine many visit relatives. Plus the rural areas are nice and cheap in Moldova. And even though it’s a very small country, Liechtenstein is like 30 k people compared to Moldova’s 1.5 mill or so
Moldova was what I was thinking too but the thumbnail picture didn't look anything like Moldova so I was curious to see what it was.
Me too. I don't buy it. I would've bet my life on it being either Moldova or Belarus. No way is Liechtenstein less visited than countries like Moldova, Belarus and Kosovo. And Ukraine and Russia are probably on that list too now. Plus, look where Liechtenstein is located.
Another beautiful video. Thank you!
Such a beautiful area, maybe the extra prices are helping to keep it that way. It is wonderful to see the smiles and hear the laughs of Matt and Julia, you seem so happy to just be together.
Another lovely video (as usual) ...So pleased the sun was shining for you, my last visit it rained and rained and then.....it rained and such a beautiful country !
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your travels and fun facts.

I just found out that the British Anthem was exported to other countries as well. How odd !
You crossed Andorra on foot, Lichenstein by car...what's next? Vatican on stilts? haha always a pleasure to see the world accompanying you!! Love from Buenos Aires
How interesting about the Anthem right! Hahaha, Vatican on stilts 😂
Thank you so much! So grateful to have you coming along with us ❤️
You do know the American national anthem is a piss take of the English one
Place seems awesome ... think am going to add that to my bucket list !
I learned about Liechtenstein when I was in high school in the early 2000s. I’ve been wanting to visit it ever since. It never got a chance :(. Hopefully one day. That place looks incredible.
I have been to Liechtenstein . Tiny as it is it has a certain charm. it is expensive. But I did manage to have it national dish one time. Hope you guys are doing ok. Enjoy your trip across

Nice trip. Greetings from Switzerland.
Discovered this unexpected adventure. Nice! 👍❤

Nice video! 👌I live fairly close to Lichtenstein, 80 min. by car but never went there to visit. Pitty, After this video it will probably get crowded with tourists 🤣
Oh i need to go Liechtenstein some time 😊. I liked Luxembourg very much, so I will love Liechtenstein.
greetings from Kuala Lumpur! what gorgeous views ❣
That's the shorter trip you have big hug 🤗 ❤
Such a clean beautiful little country !! 💕🌷🙏
Thank you Matt and Julia. Lichenstein is a beautiful tiny country.
I‘ve already visited Lichtenstein 😊
It’s a great place to be.
And your pronunciation of Käsespätzle could still improve 😂😂
Love your content 🫶🏻
Europe always looks clean
Lichtenstein was especially clean yeah 😊
yeah, come to Paris to find out its not :D
@@SlashpliteParis was dirty! Human urine, and dog feces and urine everywhere!
Very nice would like to visit there some day Thanks for the view UK
So glad you enjoyed it 🥰❤️
Happy to say I've also visited Liechtenstein - back in January 2018.
I actually rented a room close to the train station in Tisis (just over the border in Austria), and travelled into the country one morning on one of the irregular trains which stop at Schaan Vaduz.
I hiked all the way up to the end of the road in Malbun that day; taking the local bus back down to the capital later in the afternoon.
As I didn't bring any food with me, I had to make a withdrawal from an atm to get some cash for lunch. The lowest denomination available at that time was 50 Swiss Francs - which was around £50/€50!
On the subject of accommodation in the country, I had planned to stay at the youth hostel in Vaduz, but it was closed for the winter. The price for one night in a dorm at the time was £33.
I've just checked, and the same will set you back around £50 (or €50) today. Even more expensive than it was in 2018 - but no surprises there!
That helps, is quite an adventure and one that feels safe being within the borders of Europe, without being Europe. Maybe the last piece of Europe, as Europe used to be, well Europe still has it's grounding and culture to introduce to immigrants, that we are open to them is does not mean that it's a Muslim land or that it used to be Cristian on a phycological standard however medium or overall to forgive yet dominate with love and transformation.
Wishing every culture had that level of understanding one other on this times, this for this video made me see with other eyes how fascinating parts of the world can be, ones open and respectful. Sharing a simple tip for hotels and change of coin in the cashier as the hostels is a form of sharing understandings to explore, to guide one another, to celebrate however hippy, from any culture, as an individual or Christian, just traveling in peace.
How can you describe the beautiful place if it’s almost empty. ??
Love a good number plate. I have been observing them since a child 😊
Can I ask what month you guys visited? This reminds me of my home region in Alberta, Canada, except that there are no people! It looks beautiful and I'd love to visit.
Wow!!! Never expected you to go there!! I love this little country! I'm going there next year as part of a bigger trip in Europe.
By the way, I saw the opening shot where you were in front of the mountains and barn and I thought, Liechtenstein? And I was right! 😊
So nice!
I know of some people who live there and the restrictions on who can stay or live there are very high. You need to either be born to a citizen or marry one. Nobody else can become citizens because it's so tiny.
Snarf! I have been there - for work, many years ago.
Main reason of Liechtenstein be known in Portugal is not the high salaries that put us to shame but the many times our National Team played against and trashed them ( except one time, in a 2-2 tie )
I'm very jealous of u both right now..Love you guys ..
Sending lots of love to you from both of us ❤️
Gorgeous country!
Cool, was there in vaduz last July
And the shop, you are in is actually a Swiss shop… in Liechtenstein. The prices are similar to the prices in Switzerland
We drove through Liechtenstein one summer just to say we visited the 6th smallest country in Europe. Took us 30 minutes😂 Sadly too rainy and cloudy to see the mountains but headed back to Austria where Fiss blew our minds away for mountain scapes.
Beautiful
Welcome again to Austria🇦🇹👍Greetings from Vienna
Beautiful country. . Where are you from julia?
Two interesting facts. The melody of the Liechtenstein National Anthem is, of course, the melody of "God Save The King". But there was another country that had an official national anthem to the same tune. It was "Heil Dir im Sigeskranz", the official anthem of the Kingdom of Prussia in the years 1795-1918. It was also the unofficial (there was no official) Anthem of the German Reich in the period after unification in 1871-1918, i.e. in the imperial period. However, the melody of the current German anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen" or "Deutschlandlied" is based on the melody of the anthem of the Austrian and then Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the years 1797-1918, composed by Haydn himself. In 1919, the new republican German Reich finally adopted the official German state anthem with the melody of the old Austrian anthem (this was a proposal dating back to the Spring of Nations of 1848-49). Liechtenstein itself, in turn, was officially in a customs and financial union with Austria-Hungary in the years 1867-1918. This was due to the fact that the Princes of Liechtenstein were one of the most important aristocrats at the Habsburg court from the beginning of the 17th century and one of the richest and largest aristocrats in what was then Austria and the Kingdom of Bohemia. When the Habsburg Monarchy and Austria-Hungary collapsed in 1918, the then prince decided that Liechtenstein would enter into a customs and financial union with Switzerland. And it has remained so to this day.
Thank you so much for sharing! So interesting!
While not US anthem, we also grew up having same tune, but words of "My Country Tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Liberty, of thee I sing".
Wow, just wow. It takes half an hour for me to just drive through two towns to get to work at roughly 50 miles per hour (80 kilometer per hour). I can't imagine that being an entire country.
Beautiful (Julia) oh and so is the country
There is actually a really nice restaurant in Malbun called Alpenhotel/ restaurant Vögeli. But of course Li/ CH prices 😂😂
Beautiful country!! Next time you go through Austria go to Innsbruck- this is my favorite European place to visit.
So beautiful. Do you drive Julia. I wish I was not disabled as would love to go but sadly my condition does not allow it , so nice to visit through your eyes 😄
So grateful and happy to have you coming along with us 😘 no, I don’t drive. I really want to though 😊
for me you have discovered this country....beautiful
Thank you for coming along with us 🤗
BTW How much does their national dish cost? Cool place, thanks for taking us there.
We found it to be around €25 pp in a lower end restaurant 🫣❤️

How can I get to visit this beautiful country
I went hiking next to Liechtenstein in the neighbouring Swiss and Austrian Alps (then living in Konstanz) but I never felt a real desire to go there. It has the reputation of being a boring place with a dense population of investment bankers
Great! I found it already on the basis of the first clue. It's too easy for educated people. By the way, did you know that Vaduz is among the very few capital cities anywhere in the world that have neither an airport nor a station (there are 2 stations in FL but none in Vaduz).
Migros have a lot of stores throughout Switzerland.
We are used to seeing Migros in Turkey, didn’t expect that at all!
You should try Luxembourg now :p
Definitely will! Have you been there? 😊
@@MattandJulia i go there several times per year. It’s a larger Lichtenstein but hilly instead of mountains. And even more expensive ;)
The nature is beautiful but the buildings, with the exception of that one church (or at least I think it’s a church) look a bit sterile and somewhat creepy, like a fake town, it feels like playing Sims😁
Yes plz love it..
We just visited this country this August while traveling in Switzerland. Beautiful!
Liechtenstein isn't really the least visited country in Europe. And the two times I was in Vaduz there seemed to be more tourists than locals!
Yeah, look where its located. It's surrounded by some of the most popular countries in Europe, and many people probably cross through it to get between Austria and Switzerland. No way is it less visited than countries like Moldova, Belarus and Kosovo. I'd like to know the source they got this claim form, and what criteria they used to come to this conclusion.
I visited , small and beautiful.
A little country with a big heart
Wonderfulness but prices out of most range, so not worth going, Austria is lovely, I did Germany this year, I don't bother with Switzerland, being neutral. Hey have you been to Venice? Happy October.
Small country, small population, but rich ... and breathtaking scenery. What a healthy life ..
Not Leutonia!? Check out the Polka scene.
was that market turkish owned? because Migros is one of the biggest market chains in Turkey... it was interesting to see it there...
That’s what we thought! We were shocked when we saw Migros there! We googled it and apparently migros is Switzerland’s largest retail company 😯
I almost put it on my bucket list then realised I definitely wouldn't be able to eat while there 😂
Hahaha, you can always eat in Austria, that’s what we did 😁❤️❤️
Come on over to Canada, some of our prices comparable but most are higher than it is there. That looks like a very pretty country, thank you for sharing it.
Wow, didn’t know that! Would you say that the salaries in Canada match those prices?
Thank you so much for coming along with us 😘❤️
Do you do ALL he driving Matt? My husband and I share the driving. Will write in a previous clip about our longest road trip of about 15,000 kms. No way only one of us could have done all the driving. OK. Half an hour for one driver is OK.
Julia doesn’t have a license yet, she really wants one, but our recent lifestyle hasn’t allowed for the time. Also I love driving and missed it dearly, so it was a joy for me 🥰
Very cool! Never been but probably can’t afford it!!! 😂😂
Matt and Julia how much was a cheeseburger at McDonald's there $20 lol
what about Transnistra ?
Liechtenstein is a direct democracy like Switzerland and it is the only country where it is written in the constitution that each municipality can declare indpendence or join another country whenever they want. The municipalities with an average size of 3,000 inhabitants decides everything. The idea is that the governement in Vaduz is like a service bureau for the municipalities. The Count has written a book about his ideas and has travelled to states in the US where there are groups fighting for independence from the federal government.
Moldova 61.000 tourists 2021.
Lichtenstein 73.000.
That is a country that is too expensive to visit! It deserves a “drive through” only😀
Haha, unfortunately yeah 😅
🙏
Wherever you look, it looks like a post card!
When you pronounced Lichtenstein I clicked away.
The 'ch' in Lichtenstein is pronounced like 'kh'
Thanks 😊
Like "leek".... ten... stein = pronounce the "ei" as I / eye.
Beautiful Country, Let's hope they can keep it that way in a Europe in Decline, Brilliant Channel M&J Stay Safe 😘
Oh, come on, Europe in decline? I recommend you read a book called "The Fourth Turning" It is the second book. The first one published in 1997, I think. Written by two historians using a computer to graph history. And they found a repeating pattern going back to Roman times. Educate yourself. Quit wringing your hands and saying "Alas, poor Yorick" (Shakespeare ref).
How much was that dish? 50 franks? :D
Do they speak English I will love to visit there it'sooks serene in nature😊😅😅
👍🏻
I didn't know British pronunciation was different.
Does it have a Walmart?🤔
We haven’t seen one 🤔
in away thats good to hear, there is still hope for the world.@@MattandJulia
Understand, I’m saying this tongue-in-cheek… from a place of love
Let me guess; you find the place:
“To be honest..
literally…
absolutely incredible”.
You described our thoughts perfectly 😉
@@MattandJulia honestly you two do a great job. I know it’s hard. I started a channel a year ago with Armenia and now adding to it with Ukraine, which I just returned from. It is hard work to plan, film, edit, keep a production studio in your head for ideas you’ll add in later. It’s work and I appreciate what you both do.
Moldova
I guessed correctly
Moldova mate gotta do your research😅.
It's beautiful!! but very pricy 😅 No wonder there are not many people there on the streets 😂
LIECHTENSTEIN? I NEVER would have guessed! I was dead certain the least visited country in Europe would either be Moldova or Belarus.
According to World Atas, it is indeed Belarus. Liechtenstein isn't even top 3. Bosnia and Iceland are less visited. That's from THIS year. The problem with these sorts of lists is they change every year, and I'm not even sure about the World Atlas one. But I'm still convinced Belarus and Moldova are less visited, and also Ukraine and Russia now because of the war. Did they total up all the annual averages to get this ranking?
