dude....south indian laguages are so much different from hindi....it's easier for a gujarathi or punjabi to speak hindi.....but it's harder for a tamil or malayali to speak hindi unless they been in the north. u wouldn't learn tamil if you had to make a trip to chennai anyways....BTW hindi has nothing to do with being a hindustani.....They also pay taxes & they also fight in the army which you dont mind....

many tamils do understand some hindi... it's just that they can't speak/articulate well with grammer so they won't speak and embarass others (they consider bad mouthing a language as disrespect) .. since they have only been hearing it thru tv/movies or had occasionally studied in school but 99% don't get to use it daily on talking terms... but they are one of the fastest learners i have seen them catch up within a month if travelling/working in north.
