More old gyrocopter gyroplane footage flying at Erskine Park, Sydney in the 1990's...

  • This footage was taken at Erskine Park in the mid-ish 90's. ... It is more of the footage I transferred from 'very well used' VHS tapes, so, the quality is poor. As with the other videos, they are just here for nostalgia's sake... the footage is raw with no fancy nothing... it just shows what it was like flying back in the day... how simple the machines were... and how much fun could be had just thrashing around at one's favorite strip... rather than buying a 4100,000 + fancy machine that apparently isn't fun unless you take 300km journeys whenever you fly.
This video features Alan Bridger, a fantastic senior instructor who was one of the guys who put so much time and effort into keeping Erskine Park strip going... and a couple of others (Might have been Steve E? and did I see Ron King? Maybe Alan can comment and fill us in on some details)... all flying Rotax machines.
One thing I like (and miss) about this old footage, is seeing the simplicity of the machines... and the social aspect of flying back in the day. Now, thanks to the 'Behemoth Class' and 'Juggernaut scale' plastic 'gyroplanes' of today, with their shortcomings (personal opinion) ... where hub bars have a time life, weight/complexity/cost have made them somewhat unable to use makeshift strips... and when taxying, the rotors must be stationary... spectators must be 30 meters from any gyroplane etc etc... so spectators can't even see the machines once they waddle away with stationary rotors at general aviation airports. The modern 'gyroplanes' that cost so much, have also cost us the ability to socialise around gyrocopters how we used to do.
I will always encourage people, even today, to consider building an open frame machine to fang around local country areas.
Please like, share and subscribe and all that... so you can catch more videos as I upload them ... there are more to come.
The footage I found amongst my old VHS tapes and is here so those who remember Erskine Park can enjoy the old footage, the machines belonged other members of the Erskine Park group. Please feel free to comment

I met a nice bloke called Bob Phillips who talked about flying at erskine park.
He sadly died of cancer a few years ago but was a very passionate Gyro pilot.
I'm sure he would also have liked your great footage too.
    Cheers

fantastic, thanks again for putting these up. great machines you could build 6-10 for the cost of one of these modern machines.

Thank you for all those videos Murray ... I just love those light gyros,
I love the flap flap noise on short bents .. I am gonna fly toomorrow after a 2 months stop .. I can't wait to be in my little gyro again !

Yeah... I think that rotor noise is what hooked me in when I started... you only rarely hear the sound yourself when flying, but standing on the ground and hearing the rotors 'sing' is very enjoyable. I have always liked that thumping noise... same as I like 4 stroke single cylinder motorcycles... and the thumping 'Jake Brakes' on big semi trucks.... I have always been drawn to 'thumpers' haha
Have a great flight... be careful... don't rush... have fun! Let us know how your flight went

We found the t sticks reduced people drifting right in landings in strip runs. People get tense and thier shoulders tighten and pull to the right. They did it less with these.

I usually used the left throttle, forward and back with a knob on it (No, not me haha) ... and right hand on a center stick... sometimes used a twist throttle on a stick on the left (a piece of handle bar) that you can see on Sam's machine in other videos... I never flew a machine with a T stick. I do see the sense in it tho... I am constantly looking for some old footage I took of video I took at Lake George air to air. I had a Panasonic, full size VHS camera... which sat on my right shoulder (like a small TV camera) with an eyepiece that swivelled out to view... so, you can imagine me flying along with this thing on my shoulder, tying up my right hand (while filming) flying with my left hand on the stick... my machine liked to fly at 60kts and Sam's machine liked to fly at 50kts... I was trying to stay behind him, look through the small viewer and not be able to get to the throttle without putting the camera across my lap...
It was a nightmare... I mainly just had to point the camera and hope for the best... but the footage came out alright. I also swooped down though the valleys of the escarpment which came out awesome... but you guessed it... I haven't been able to find that footage yet... DoH!!
I can see that having the throttle ON the stick could help at times... especially if you want to use Binoculars to read road signs like I used to do (to save having to go low to read them) haha (true story... it was before GPS)

Did you ever get aerial footage or were the cameras too big back then. I remember one guy put a camera on his helmet out west qld. Good footage. Although very different now with go pros and 360 cameras

    • @ratmanmurray7137
      @ratmanmurray7137  Před rokem +1

haha... yes, my camera was a full size VHS ... very awkward to use when flying... I had to take off with it laying across my lap and once flying, I could put it on my shoulder.... more on that in another reply i made since you posted this comment. I will be right once I get flying again, I have a couple of GoPro9 and an insta one X2 now... so will be able to capture all sorts of footage

@@ratmanmurray7137 yeah my son is obsessed by old technology me I get terribly excited by the new gear. My son often buys or collects old gear computers etc off ebay and gets it working again. Me I got windy excited to buy a $9 microcontroller that only weighs 3 grams. I'm so glad you had that camera but you look at the footage we get now from ultralights etc it's amazing how far the gear has come.

@@cameronlapworth2284 Yes, most modern stuff is awesome... like bluetooth and Wifi... try explaining how that works! haha... but what disappoints me is like most things modern bring upon us new laws/rules/limits... and make 'normal' old stuff that wasn't subject to rules/laws suddenly dangerous and needing to be either stamped out or heavily regulated. Such as, hub bars needing replacement every 500 hours... even on machines you can't even get a new hub bar for... and cars that don't have airbags/ABS/collision avoidance technology are deemed totally unsafe (as opposed to teaching people to drive) etc... our world is out of control unfortunately. As soon as things get 'modernised' and become mainstream (like E scooters and PEVs in general) they become rulebound

@@ratmanmurray7137 yeah couldn't agree more. And it'll only encourage people to lie on log books etc. We had a similar problem with lasers. I build my own telescopes and taught my year 8 class to build another big bugger. Anyway on mine I wanted to use a green laser as a finder as you calibrate the mount to eyepiece and you shoot a green beam up to the object Eg. Star and bang it's in your eyepiece. However they were trying to ban the buggers because idiots were shinning them at aircraft. Likewise drones. I'm most offended by things like 500hour thing. Let me guess someone makes a poorly designed hub bar on a gyro 3x as heavy as mine and now I have a time life? It should only be an obligation to demonstrate when the standard is above what has been in service prior. So build a 290kg gyro empty weight for two people demonstrate the engineering but why should my bensen hub be retired when bensen did the aeronautical entering 50 bloody years ago? And countless hours flown since?. Really starting to despise what the upper end of this sport is doing to our end.
