    Scotty, just a tip my father taught me. For a real evaluation on checking the ball joint, jack up the wheel with the jack under the lower a frame that way the suspension will be in the same position as if the wheel was on the ground. Give it a shake then. When jacked up under the frame the suspension and ball joint will hang in a position unnatural and unworn for common driving. Keep the great suggestions coming.

    Have 2006 4x4 - only problems are 1. Stupid smog pump - bought override online already (mouse made a nest in the pump motor and motor died all together with pump control module almost $300 at the dealer)
    Whole pump system with pump motor, valves and module cost about 700-800$ or you just buy bypass for about $160 and yes Toyota won't fix it even there was recall for 2007 and up
    2. Bad ball joints - if your truck makes squeaky sounds from suspension or steering wheel not going back to position after turn you have to change lower ball joints - get a good ones (about 60+$ each)
    3. Brakes - hard to get rid of air from system, also front calipers are junk and watch for rusted out brake lines by the wheel/frame - had one cracked when driving - just a tiny hole but it was barely braking at all
    Besides that change fluids in transmission with factory oil and change screen (don't flush transmission - just drop whatever comes out and measure it and put same amount back in - no dipstick on 2005-2006 just a plug in tranny pan, fluids in rear and differentials and you good to go for another 100k+ miles - don't forget timing belt every 100k

What they did was use a really good quality thick garden hose , shove the spring ends into the hose until the hose length is enough to separate the spring from the absorber base plate, not wrap the whole spring with the hose , cut excess hose off then reassemble the absorber and spring . That replaces the insulator.

      People dont wanna change them because you have to take the shock apart to do so. On a coilover thats been on for a while, the bolt holding the shock together gets pretty rusty. Youre more likely to just break the top shaft off the shock, or round off the bolt and have to cut it off. Unless youre gonna replace the whole shock, its better to leave it alone usually. By the time the rubber isolator is worn out, you should really change the whole shock anyway.

    Scotty I just had my 4 wheel alignment outback 2017 done at Sabaru dealership , it still pulls to the right ! The service manager said the road causes this to happen! On a flat straight road it still pulls to the right, I am going to go to another private shop and see what they say! I have been driving for 51 years and I know when a car is out of alignment!!

    In Oregon we still have gas attendants, it is very inefficient. Especially at Costco. When you pump your own gas there's one attendant per vehicle instead of a few trying to service many vehicles at once.

    • @norsefire20
      @norsefire20 Před 2 lety +1

      Really? Huh, I'm in New Jersey so we have attendants and honestly Costco always goes very well for me even with all the cars. In fact I genuinely like getting gas at Costco because, aside from the line itself, they're easily one of the fastest. But, oh hell yeah there are PLENTY of times where I wish we could just do it ourselves

    Had a local mechanic look at one of my rollers that wouldn’t start at all. Proceeded to tell me the starter, relay, fuse and carburetor needed service. As well the hydraulic hoses. I said okay, he says “yup, that’ll be like $1,300.00 I called up another mobile mechanic with 36 years experience. Took a look and knew exactly what the issue was and got it started. Other mechanic showed up and saw the roller running. I’ve never seen a man distance himself and pretend to play on his phone so much. I proceeded to look him in the eye, and start/stop the roller just to throw it in his face.

Stand in line to give some freak with metal sticking out of his or her tattooed face to give them my credit card because they did not trust me. And then have to stand in line a second time to retrieve my credit card because they did not trust me. And just hope they remembered to turn your pump on so a third trip back into the building to stand in line to get the pump turned on was not necessary.

    200 bucks for ball joints installed with diagnosis doesn't sound realistic anyway. Sway bar links with misdiagnoses makes more sense at that price. Hopefully they at least recommend tires and alignment. Then again with the diagnosis already blown, why bother spending any more at that shop.

    You incorrectly checked the bottom balljoints as there were loaded. You need to take the weight off the balljoint by using a jack or jackstand on the bottom control arm not the chassis.
    People make mistakes, stop calling every mechanic a ripoff. It makes our trade toxic and makes everyone think mechanics are untrustworthy.

    Hate to break it to Scotty, but 75% of people here in NJ do not want to pump their own gas, and gas is way more expensive in Pennsylvania, which has the highest gas taxes of any state. Personally, the option to have it is fine with me. There are tradeoffs - you want self serve when you're in a hurry and you want full serve when you're in a monsoon.
