Finally! Someone who knows something. I started "Mastering DIabetes" because I got VERY sick on Keto/low carb after 5 yrs and dumped it recently, (I was a walking scientific dictionary about how to do Keto/low carb "right.") I lost 50% of my hair. With whole plant foods MD I immediately got my arthritic hand working again and my health changed just after 1 week. I have Type II Diabetes. I started an exclusively WFPB lifestyle in April 2021. Even though I am still taking diabetic meds, my A1c has gone from over 11 to 6.6, and my weight has reduced by 50 lbs (without trying). My physician has determined we can start reducing the meds once I reach an A1c of 6.0. I primarily follow Dr. Barnard's protocols for reversing diabetes, and am in love with his cookbook. All my labs were much better almost where they were when I was 30, 30 years ago, and doc ask what I was doing. I said wfpb n she said that is too restrictive. I ask how so....crickets. She countered with I should be eating keto because I need meat. Now I am looking at her sideways and ask why I would need meat. She says b12 deficiency, I responded with I can take a b12 supplement. She continued my exam in silence. I ask if she was OK and she said my eating is so restrictive that she wanted me to do a 6 month followup because she did not feel that I could stick to wfpb. WHAT?? I am so not that type of patient. If I have an issue I listen, research ask questions and if needed take meds. So this surprises me. But unlike Dr Bernard, I ain't trying to teach her anything. I will provide direction on where she can go to learn but that was my last visit to her. Finding a new physician who believes in the healing power of food.

I followed a whole food plant based diet for over 10 years. I stayed away from all oils, but I did consume chia, flax and hemp seeds in order to get enough omega 3's. I started to develop a very severe case of dry eye and discovered that I needed retinol vitamin A to stop this. Vitamin A from veggies only converts 3% of this vitamin into retinol. That said I had to start taking cod liver oil. Within 2-3 weeks my dry eye had completely cleared up. Therefore I have to have oil or suffer with dry eye.

You can put anything on a sweet potato - unfortified nutritional yeast - I use Trader Joe's sweet chili sauce that has no oil and low salt - or ketchup (low salt of course) - I was inspired by Dr. Barnard in 2011 after seeing him on PBS and went on a vegan diet - at first more processed foods and then in 2016 I went on a salt, oil, sugar free vegan diet. My arthritis almost disappeared, my cholesterol went down, I have a lot of energy. I'm almost 70 and my peers are all taking lots of meds and can't go on hikes - but I do. This is an amazing diet and I owe a lot to Dr. Barnard.

10:15 I agree that it depends on the cheese - ones that have 0 protein, no calcium - and are just water + oil + emulsifier and flavoring is something to avoid. There's really great cheeses that're whole foods - one channel showed a green pea cheese where it was whole green peas with added microbes to turn it into cheese - and that I'd approve - it has the protein and nutrients. If you top it with dried basil - which has some of the most calcium of any food out there - outside of green powders like barley grass - you'd get the calcium! My recommendation is pea cheese + basil! However, this is just coming out of my head as I think - so people should experiment to know what's right.
I also make sunflower milk from sunflowers + milk and I don't strain it - maybe that would be nice enough as a liquid mozzarella? I don't know - as sunflower has the protein, but doesn't have much calcium for its fat content. It too would need basil for calcium.
I feel like with the oil-water cheeses - they're ok for a little taste (like a small amount), especially on those veggie pizzas that can be really low in fat, as long as the protein + calcium's somewhere else. That said - I agree with Dr. Barnard - I too am against toxic oils - so you can really just replace the cheese with cheaper, healthier fat alternatives - like whole avocado!

Some do maple syrup - but it's already high in sugar! Oh I remember now - people top it with avocado - like an avocado toast if it's sliced! I would imagine cinnamon being pretty nice!!! Maybe doing a coconut milk + maple syrup drizzle with cinnamon on top sounds great. I bet I'd do raisins too! I think that's a recipe.

I consider the vegan cheeses, butters as more like condiments. Use very little to add a bit of flavor. Nooch, I put on lots of things for the nutrition, and it tastes great. Normally we use olive oil where it's needed. I try not to be too strict about our diet, because I want to keep my not as enthusiastic family members from going back to their standard diet because they got bored with my cooking. But I consider these things, like the mock meats and frozen desserts as junk food, and eat little of it as a treat. Seems to be working. Our labs look very good, and our weight is almost ideal. So, I think I'm on the right track. Hadn't even considered the hair food connection. Thanks.

Dr. Barnard: "There is never a case where meat and dairy are required." That, in response to, what if my doctor says don't go vegan? In other words, there is no downside. it is only a win-win situation, this whole foods plant-based diet that Dr. McDougall enlightened me about, say, 35 years ago ( and Dr. Barnard way back then, too) Guess what? They are right, now 64, I am living proof. Simply amazing, especially when compared to my full-blooded sisters and their medical histories by now. From cancer to arthritis to depression to headaches to liver disease to grey thinning hair - well, I could go on - yes, I got them beat. I have had none of these issues (that I know of or needed to be treated for anyway!). And other than my light brown hair having lost it's earlier auburn accents, I'm good there and got plenty. I'm a perfect weight, have tons of energy, sleep great, eat great food (thank you Lindsay Nixon - and Dr. Barnard), and my bowel movements are on time, clean, thorough, and let's just say I wish I could brag more about that. : ) I say this: USE YOUR HEAD people, choose health over sickness. I myself began this journey when I suddenly became vegetarian (on the elevator between my office and the parking garage). I did it entirely for ethical reasons and assumed I'd have to be careful else I'd make myself sick. It was 1984. I was 25 years old. So I looked round and miraculously found The McDougall Program and started following it and it saved my life, especially as compared to my friend who became vegetarian at the same time but gave up meat and substituted dairy - dead of a heart attack before she was 50 (no, it did not run in her family). So, give up meat and dairy because you know it is wrong to enslave those living, feeling individuals - then take glowing health as your just desserts.

I was not diagnosed with pre diabetes or having diabetes .but an elevated A1C reading was 6.2 it s now 5.3 with me working on my diet.Strange though,I eat a small portion of a carbohydrate diet for lunch consists of normal rice with vegetables and chicken almost every day and please note, once per day .I don’t eat or drink sweets and I do consume a lot of apple cider vinegar in water.but my concern is why does my fasting blood sugars read over 100 mg dl on mornings ,though not every morning I t is rare at this time 118mg dl fasting. Most of the times I basically have one meal of carbohydrates during the day.I don’t snack but if i do would have healthy ones nuts but not every day it may be twice or three times for the week .i would prefer to eat paw paw or an apple or a fruit that is good for me.Is it that my sugar levels go up because I don’t eat regularly? Some times if I do test myself by having something small around 5 to 5 30 pm in the afternoon my fasting sugar never reaches 118 as this is my latest concern ,the most it might be is 105’ , to 110 every morning .I test my sugar very often during the day ,I do exercise almost every day at least 6 days per week.and if I do eat my lunches at mid day or late afternoon if I test and my sugar is elevated more than I believe is abnormal, I do exercise also in the afternoon and it goes down normal , I’m not on any medication .I choose to give all this information as I think it may help in a diagnosis. I did loose a lot of weight ,and is always watching the way I eat Thank you for allowing me to burden you with all this may be unnecessary but I think I had to do this .Great knowledge you have to offer ,I m always clicking on.I’m from the Republic Islands of Trinidad and Tobago

Appreciate the q&a for hair loss. Speaking for myself, I recently cut out nuts and seeds, besides flaxseed. I did this because even though I didn't use oil, I have terrible dandruff and it's all over my face, too. It's been 2 weeks almost and I feel a lot better. Less anxiety. It's taking some time but I'm hopeful this will stop the dandruff and hair loss around my temples.
To put it in perspective, I used to eat a 2 lb jar of peanut butter every two weeks. And I recently was eating one 1lb jar of sunflower seed butter once a week.
Edit: I noticed I got some likes for this comment. I no longer recommend cutting out all nuts and seeds. My hands got cracked and dry after I did that. I brought them back but you should measure out how much you have. You need them but only small amounts

Atenolol triggers patterned hair loss in women. It's 7% of women but I was in that 7% if I remember correctly. It was enough for me in 9 months to do damage. What seems to have caused hair growth years later? Boiled sweet potatoes every day. Must be the collagen. Don't know but my hair is growing back and is thicker everywhere. There's just a small amount still sparse near the forehead. My body craves the sweet potatoes 🤔. Be careful what meds you take and what the side effects could do to your body and emotional well being. As it turned out i didn't need the BP meds just exercise and control food intake.

My mom has thinning too and has also been on a beta blocker for most her life.
I have been working on getting off mine. I take it for anxiety and heart pounding. Which could also be causing hair loss.
