      @@TheBeesleys99 I know it's become an international tourist attraction but there's so many other options too. There's also bin stores, there's generic ones that have franchised but they're not legit as the proper dollar per pound thrift stores where most resellers hunt. Seriously, next visit, you should try an American flea market & swap meets . . Or one of the many black market alleys, usually not too far from a fashion district. Or look up the largest farmer's markets in the U.S. while many operate year around, the bigger ones have more annual events that are the real show, where the rest of the state (sometimes surrounding outliers along the border) come out to promote their biz and sell their excess... and then of course, you have the standard farmers' faire in many more rural and agriculture towns, more of an exhibition and contest with some fair games, you want the agricultural ones rather than the "county" variety which is a bit more carnival, circus. It's more of a foodie, well, street foodie's paradise... with so many food stands that actively promote heart failure.
      A wide range of festivals too. . . some you can experience anywhere but Americans do have their own take on things. It's not just music, not just dance, it's a fuller experience and often overwhelming with the amount of people vs say the same events in Europe, especially the uk. You also get some weird ones in smaller, out of the way locations... in Colorado, miles higher than the mile high city of Denver, they have a festival celebrating a town's founding by a brothel madam and race beds down the road... two people per bed, a lad in night clothes and a lass dressed like a wild west harlot. Or there was the testyfesty - it went out a few years ago, it was festival centered around deep fried testicles. a rather rowdy event, but there are similar, more family events centered around rocky mountain oysters elsewhere.

    The reason why you probably cant find the birthday goldfish is because some companies will release "specialty" flavors only at certain times of the year, or they might release a special flavor and see how well it sells. U.S. that want to film inside a place. just ask for a manager when you first get inside and say that you just have a question. when you talk to the manager, just tell them you're visiting from (insert your country here) and you would like to film your experience to show family back home. 9/10 times they'll happily let your film. also make sure you get the name of the manager so in case anyone else tries to stop you, just tell them that you already spoken to manager (insert name here) and they gave you permission. that will shut up most of the workers instantly and they'll leave you alone after that....

    Never buy produce or meat at Walmart. While in Texas, buy all of your groceries at HEB. Wherever there is an HEB+, there's a nearby Walmart with like 10 customers in it.

    • @tvc1848
      @tvc1848 Před 22 dny +1

      I live within about 7 minutes of a Walmart and 10 minutes of an HEB. While our HEB has more meat items like beef ribs and pork belly, the Walmart has a better meat section and it’s cleaner. The Walmart vegetable/fruit section usually blows away HEB but again, HEB has things like fresh bean sprouts that Walmart doesn’t carry. Walmart’s is cleaner, better kept, etc.
      I split time between them and love HEB’s specialty sections and better selections such as in the Asian foods. Ours has a fish market which is great. Sometimes I hit HEB instead just for the fish market.
      For most groceries it’s Walmart but for certain items HEB kills Walmart.

    • @peensteen
      @peensteen Před 21 dnem

      @tvc1848 I said HEB+, not old HEBs. Walmart is quantity over quality. Walmart Supercenters have substandard quality produce and meat compared to HEB. Walmart has a killer processed food and snack selection (especially breakfast cereals and snacks), but they can't compete with HEB quality in REAL food. Then again, it's like I said about "wherever there's an HEB+", some towns have small, shitty HEBs, and huge Walmarts. My town has a Walmart Supercenter and HEB of equal size, and it's obvious which one is more popular when you see the crowds in HEB. I only go to Walmart for non-food items, or guilty pleasure junk cereals. Even the HEB store brand foods are miles better than Sam's Choice.

    When I started working at Walmart as a cashier, I had to wear a shirt and tie and I was one of the first male cashiers. We were timed by how many items per minute we could check out, including bagging the merchandise. They didn't have that policy at the Supercenters because grocery items are more fragile than hard goods. They only had soda, juice, candy, and snack foods at regular Walmart stores. When I first started, and for a few years after we "went" Supercenter (moving into a Supercenter) visible tattoos, beards, long hair (for guys), facial piercings, and piercings for guys weren't permitted. Only the stockboys (the guys who did maintenance, customer carryouts, gathered carts, and other menial labor) were allowed to wear blue jeans. When they introduced vests, things started getting more casual. As soon as beards were allowed, all the managers tried to grow beards, with varying success. :) We would also load the bags into the customers cart, now the cashiers just fill the bags, leaving it up to the customer to put the bags in your cart. We were also trained to be meticulous with our bagging, to make sure not to put heavy things on top of potato chips, not to put chemicals with food items and different meats in their own bags to prevent cross contamination. Very few cashiers pay attention to details like that any more. Tips are NOT allowed, at all. When a customer insisted, after I took a heavy item out, I would put the "tip" in the donation jar for Le Bon Heur Children's hospital. Walmart is Le Bon Heur's biggest donor. When one of my son's had to go to Le Bon Heur for his heart problems at birth, Walmart had a representative at the hospital make sure my wife and other son were taken care of during his treatment. I had no problem at all requesting more time off. I might not have seen eye to eye with management sometimes, but reflecting upon it years later, it was the best job I ever had compared to others later on. It was like a family, you have quarrels, but it worked out.

"Grocery stores" are much smaller on average (though probably still larger than you are used to), mostly or entirely food or food-related items, sometimes with an aisle or two of "seasonal" items like holiday decorations or things for picnics or grilling. My wife and I boycott Walmart, because they put mom and pop store out of business, treat their employees poorly, poor quality merchandise that was manufactured in China and then, also, demand to show your receipt, immediately after you had just gone thru the checkout. Those are just few reasons that come to mind. @JoshuaMartian-go3tm

      @@charlesford5935 All true points, however that's capitalism and the price of wanting cheap things. Nothing changes until the employees unionize tho. Which will be used as an excuse to hike up prices no doubt.

    If they think product sizes in Walmart are big, their heads would explode in Costco. Just saying.

    the best advise to get stuff that is hard to find in Europe but easy to find in the U.S. is have a 'shopping buddy' in the U.S. and set up a pay account with them so that they can go do your shopping for you and ship it to you and you pay them back through the pay account... this worked for me when I lived overseas for several years when I couldn't come back to the States to do my own shopping.... the best ones are close family, or friends, but you could also try and trust a good fan... and don't feel guilty about the customs issues. most Americans are willing to jump through flaming hoops to help someone, especially with a new experience or to show off America..

    Cereal explanation: We have enough land to grow a ton of grain. We literally grain the world. Of course we have cereal.

    Walmart isn't a Supermarket, it's a Department Store. For the most part, Walmart and Target only added groceries in the 90s and 2000s.

      There are some that are both, having a full supermarket as well as all the other departments (Valley Stream, NY), and others that are only supermarkets (Levittown NY)

      @nancyomalley6286 Most Walmarts are both at this point, and Target is working on converting their stores. He said in Britain they can't buy strollers at the supermarket, well the same is true here, Kroger won't have that.

    When I went to England I packed my suitcase and placed in in a slightly larger suitcase. This way I had plenty of room for all my goodies to bring home. I just had to pay for the extra bag on the way home. It worked out nicely.
