Democracy's XI: Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar & Harsha Bhogle with Rajdeep Sardesai

  • Nothing unites India like cricket. The Indian team is a glorious mix of people from big cities and small, from different religions, classes, castes, regions and languages; where the son of a pump manager from Ranchi can dare to dream; where a child prodigy from Mumbai can play beside a Muslim from the back alleys of Hyderabad. And while dynasts can rule the roost in politics and Bollywood, cricket presents a level playing field that mirrors the spirit of our constitution. The sport, then, reflects the best of India.
Juggernaut Books, Royal Opera House, Mumbai and Avid Learning invite you to celebrate the release of journalist Rajdeep Sardesai's new book, Democracy’s XI: The Great Indian Cricket Story, in the presence of cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.
The duo will then be in conversation with cricket commentator and journalist Harsha Bhogle and the author to discuss themes and anecdotes from the book as well as the history of Cricket- and through it the history of a Nation.

When Gavaskar is speaking one should just listen. Such an excellent story teller. On the other hand when Rajdeep speaks it feels like pure noise even if he is making some sense.

I agree. Oral communication thing that Gavaskar said was just shut down by Rajdeep to lay more importance to Sachin's 11 yr old mental setup. Gavadkars oral and diary stories were really priceless lessons.

All the sweet souls here, please stop the tag titles of God king etc. This is the reason why we aren't able to make inclusive environment with all fans now. I know SACHIN is greatest and his incredible consistency in 1996 2003 2011 till SEMIS in ODIs & even in toughest conditions SENA WINDIES PAK Tests vs all these lethal bowling & batting firepowers since 1990 itself is the clear eveidence of the same, but don't overglorify it to invite the hate of egoist playerfans or anyone. Please read this. ☺️
All the people including 1950s to 2000s or even 2000s till date cricket fans, don't ever compare two different era players at all, because that comparison comes alongwith multitude of crucial factors like own team strength and opposition strength team count, fielding & old ball rules, pitch & umpiring realities, and different format knockouts introduced since 2007 of T20s and later WTCFINALS. So simply admire the skills of players always, and be graceful to accept their failures as well, be it KOHLI, SACHIN or even SIR VIV. ✌️☺️
Dear friends, even cricketer in earlier years himself & cricket expert HARSHA BHOGLE appreciates the originality of each & every player including SACHIN KOHLI everyone. So let's love the unique skills of every player, rather than any comparison. Let's be sports lovers, not player fanatics, right ✌️☺️

Mr Sunil Gavaskar still holds the record for most runs in a debut series with his mammoth 773 in 1971 Vs West Indies and overall a staggering 13 test hundreds against the mighty West Indies.
Sachin is still the youngest test centurion in 3 continents- Europe (England), Africa (South Africa) and Australia. And 20 of his 100 international centuries coming against the mighty Australian team.
These gentlemen are two of the very greatest batsmen ever and immortal in cricketing folklore especially cuz of their battles against the very best teams.

      OUT, 4TH IN GROUP B
H : VISHWANATH GAVASKAR KAPIL (allround okay contribution) & BRIJESH (although small contribution)
      (All have performed fairly average)
V : Whole batting lineup (and even worst bowling), especially GAEKWAD VENGSARKAR AMARNATH with bat vs strong teams WI NZ
      1983 & 1987 :
[ KEY VETERAN PERFORMERS EITHER INCONSISTENT OR MISSED CRUCIAL KNOCKOUTS, AS IN 1987 ]
      CAPTAIN :

H : SIDHU AZHAR MANINDER SHASTRI GAVASKAR (except his AUS ENG failures) KAPIL
(SIDHU AZHAR SHASTRI MANINDER are exceptional, with batting consistency crucial contribution or crucial batter wkts)
      V : VENGSARKAR GAVASKAR
(Both are batting legends, but they've performed only vs AUS or else weak NZ ZIM of this WC unlike relatively stronger NZ ZIM of 1975 till 1983, VENGSARKAR didn't play SEMIS vs ENG which is real big dent to added batting strength, KAPIL is also inconsistent with bat)
      1992 TILL 1999 :
[ OVERALL BATTING BOWLING FAILURE, TOO MUCH CHOPPING AND CHANGING & NOT BACKING PROVEN PERFORMERS, LIKE WC1987 MATCHWINNER SIDHU EXCLUDED IN WC1992 ]
      CAPTAIN :
      MOHD. AZHARUDDIN
      1992 :
DISQUALIFIED IN TOP4 IN ROUND-ROBIN WORLD CUP
H : AZHAR KAPIL SACHIN MANJREKAR PRABHAKAR (bit with ball)/JADEJA
V : No consistency except AZHAR KAPIL & somewhat SACHIN/JADEJA/MANJREKAR, and mostly it's batting failure (than bowling vs last SA match), SIDHU exclusion from WC1992 is totally baseless (knowledgeable ones tell me about this)
      1996 :
LOST SEMIS TO SRILANKA BY RIOTING CROWD
(Note that SL had got 2 matches walkover in group stage from AUS & WI due to bombing & safety concerns caused by LTTE in SL)
H : SACHIN SIDHU KUMBLE RAJU JADEJA PRASAD & lastly SRINATH (in SEMIS and few other matches, also inconsistent at times)
V : AZHAR JADEJA PRABHAKAR KAMBLI (very very inconsistent with bat or ball, and consistent shuffling of batting order by captain with unsettled openers despite matchwinner SIDHU availability)
      1998 :
      LOST SEMIS TO WINDIES
H : SACHIN GANGULY JADEJA ROBIN JOSHI DRAVID
V : Worst bowling unable to pick wickets or contain runs, especially KUMBLE SRINATH vs strong WI in SEMIS
      1999 :
      OUT, LAST IN SUPER SIX
H : DRAVID GANGULY SACHIN ROBIN JADEJA RAMESH (good contributions with bat often at times) & SRINATH KUMBLE PRASAD MOHANTY (either wicket takers or have contained runs somewhat often)
V : Extremely inconsistent batting except DRAVID GANGULY SACHIN, JADEJA peeks in super six stage and ROBIN is solid, but often the top trio fails in some crucial matches, AZHAR MONGIA and bowlers except PRASAD MOHANTY SRINATH ROBIN & little of KUMBLE are damn inconsistent and have leaked runs in few matches which led to WC exit with last position in super six, and even GANGULY was very iffy in super six. ☹️

I know SACHIN is greatest of all-conditions batting including in ODI knockouts (3rd after VIV & KIRSTEN as per quora answer to "How often did Sachin Tendulkar deliver when it was really required?") and his incredible consistency in 1996 2003 2011 till SEMIS in ODIs & even in toughest conditions SENA WINDIES PAK Tests vs all these lethal bowling & batting firepowers since 1990 itself is the clear evidence of the same, but don't overglorify it to invite the hate of egoist playerfans or anyone.
Dear friends, even cricketer in earlier years himself & cricket expert HARSHA BHOGLE appreciates the originality of each & every player including SACHIN KOHLI everyone, and doesn't make such typical comparative judgements. So let's love the unique skills of every player, rather than any comparison. Let's be sports lovers, not player fanatics, right ✌️☺️
All toxicity ignored always, and polite replies welcome. ☺️
      Share this to all ✌️👍☺️

Sachin is on point about changing in fitness and preparation. I was doing my PT in India in middle 90s and when our batch attended a sports medicine seminar, one expert mentioned that only preparation Indian cricket team do then prior to match was 5 rounds off running around the ground and some stretching exercises. Ali Irani was the physio for many years. The best thing happened was the board finally got rid of him and hired a professional. This is what Sachin mentioned without naming the former. According to that speaker Indian hockey team then had professional training and preparation compared to cricket team.

Kapil is much much bigger and greater cricketer than dhoni. Dhoni was very average batsman in tests. And dhoni had a ready made team which was built by saurav. No comparision between Kapil and Dhoni pls.Kapil was great - bowling , batting , fielding and captaining a weaker team which was not even paid proper match fees . For a player to be called great his record in tests compulsorily superb and record in odis is an additional ability .

Simple.. the change happens in every sport or every field.. Indian cricket has the advantage of Indian cricket fans and therefore money. Sachin's generation's batting line up is equally or even more talented to do what the current gen is doing too. Bowling is a different story. But sport evolves, fitness techniques, medicine and everything does. We are seeing that in all sports...

Here, the guests were doing everything to make it better for Harsha but Rajdeep kept on stealing the thunder and ruined it completely as if he is interviewing everyone on CNN-IBN. The title of the book is a complete misnomer. The word "democracy" does not belong there. "11 Plurocrats" would be a better title. • @bonthubab757
    @bonthubab757 Před 6 lety +6

use less discussion.. answer is very simple : Diliip Sardesai's Son didnt clicked in right areas i guess - title should not be democracy 11 , but it should be capitalist 11.
First thing: Its all about how rich BCCI has become from 1980 to till date- that reflects on the mindset of Indian players- in other words money dictate terms- more richer BCCI provide more facility - more facility would fine tune raw talent.. This is why Pakistan , despite having raw talent over decades, even from 60's couldn't reach the expected heights ..
The amount of money generated for cricketers - is the reason why a school going kid chooses cricket as his profession
Second thing: Who changed it ? Gevaskar was right - it was Kapil dev who won us world cup in 1983- which lead India to host 1987 world cup , which i consider the starting point of revenue generation to BCCI.. If Kapil didnot won us WC in 83, we would not have hosted reliance world cup in 1987 ...By 1996 WC, BCCI has become richer - thanks to the heroics of one man - Sachin
Third : Generation gap & leader ship - Change is a natural process - Good leaders have arrived - Saurav and Dhoni has a distinct approach to the game , than the other previous captains. Both Saurav and Dhoni were more confident and innovative - Now you can see Vkohli a supremely confident player and captain .
It makes easy for the selection committee for the next generation as well- on how to choose a future captain

Funny that all four on the stage are originally Marathi, yet speaking all English on an English talk show in India.
Also funny that the book's author's name on the cover is far larger than the title of the book. Talk about humility...
