Exactly and it has less bricks which is also positive, no need to build for 5 hours 2000 parts baseplate or straight walls, thats why You use baseplate or bigger elements for walls
I feel like baseplates are vastly misunderstood pieces. While the new rock formations are very elaborate, the point of old baseplates wasn't to give an amazing building experience - quite the contrary. It was so speed up the building process, because at the end of the day, it's supposed to be just a big good ol' rock. The rock platform (or rather the "groundwork") is not an exciting part of the build process for kids (and I know many AFOLs appreciate elaborate rock formations, but kids? very few care about this). Kids just wanted to get to the fortress build and to actually play with the set. So in my opinion the general view that "baseplates are cheating" is just a misunderstanding of the intention behind the piece. Now, this set wasn't made for kids, it's meant for adults who remember liking/wanting this set as kids. But in all honesty, I feel all those slopes and round bricks only make the design more noisy. I can understand people who enjoy this look though, because it has the advantage of being modular and the shape is more complex.
Many of them had enclosed holes in them where you can put actual water in to simulate a pool or a well. You cant do that with modern designs. My only issue with old raised baseplates is that due to their size and weight, they tended to crack and brake on the weaker sections.
The old set was a "construction toy", and the new set is more of a display piece that focuses on the small details. The simplicity and genericity of parts in the old one allows you to come up with an entirely different structure in an hour or so, whereas with the new one, more time would be needed only to sort the tiny "finishing" pieces before starting to build anything.
Amazing to think the old set price translated to nowadays was $161. That was a lot of money for basically very few bricks. I always thought Lego had gotten a lot more expensive, but now I understand why my parents couldn’t afford to give us the bigger sets. The new set has a lot more possibilities, also a lot more MOC possibilities with all the pieces instead of baseplate. And it has a large boat included!
Thank you for show the price comparison. I've had so many 'arguments' with afol's, new lego fans, etc. about Lego has ALWAYS been expensive. Always. I've been a collector for decades and even back in the seventies for the amount of bricks you got in a set from the early space, castle, pirate, etc it was always an expensive toy. Mom could only get me the smaller sets where you can make a bunch of stuff out of a few bricks, but the space and castle stuff was pricey. And nowadays, it's so easy to use an inflation calculator, go to brickset to see the original price and piece count and you can see, today, Lego is pretty reasonable with it's prices compared to the past.
Got my old lego pirates out last year, cleaned them and put them all back together including the original El Dorado fortress - it was a great trip down memory lane. Lego Pirates were the main thing I had as a kid and am going to have to pull the trigger on the newer El Dorado Fortress. Great video!
The origional has much better symmetry and proportions. The new one shines when pulled out into modular but the origional is the best looking lego model ever (except maybe black knights castle)
@@GANDROID100 No in land of Legoland pirates and castle there never was any killing. Sadly, this all changed for worst just like the whole world did since then. Lack of sense in your comment proves it to the point.
I love the classic set but I prefer the new one. With about the same price you get the new which has that nice box and you can experience the unboxing and building it. Vintage fortress is also excellent addition but for me the money speaks.
The palm tree is really the focal point of the new one for me, I think I'd definitely pick the new one given that I'd want to add more in terms of vegetation and probably change up the black dock to a brown / wood vibe! This one is a banger, I think I'll definitely pick it up and modify it slightly.
Cool new set, but it does not have a hold to store all the treasure that need protecting, so the crane does not really have the same purpose and is crazy big. Sometimes I buy these reimaging and set they side by side to show how lego has evolved. May get this. I bought the Renegade Runner for the pirates back when I was a kid, never had the other larger sets. Had a friend who had the big ship NIB years later. He never even opened it. He was bored with lego. So envious.
LOVE Everything About this Setup! Modular RULES, So Awesome, such a Fantastic Design and Ideas are out of this World. Soo Cool , You are spot on! This is a MUST Have for anyone, I will be getting Multiples =) Real GEM Here !! Excited to get ability to Buy this
Looks like your OG is missing some 2x1 white bricks on the front walls.... Pretty good review showing the positives and negatives of both designs, but I think the brick built door and gate house look cheap and uninspired compared to the OG doors. The crane, might actually be a little too big but does look like its built to do the job. The tower is on though is built so differently it does not really match any of the rest of it. Even though the brick built base is like half the cost of the set, it is quite an improvement itself. It would have been nice to compare some of the minis though, the OG ones are white tops with blue printing, and the new ones are blue with white printing and they do not show up as clearly. I love how it is modular, It would be fantastic if they remade the trade depot, but included a way to combine both sets into one big set. As an owner of the OG it is hard to justify the spending of the $$ for this but I sure would like it. The fortress with the baracuda ship was my most played with LEGO and of all of them stayed as its original shape more than anything else, such as castles and spaceships that got made into other things.
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. I do appreciate the '89 original for its simplicity and that's something I really like about Lego of my youth that's missing from newer sets, but the additional features of the newer version more than make up for it here (modularity, play, features). I think the sails on both ships have their charms, I do like the original slightly more, but I like the newer one for its accurate oil-cloth like color.
Castle 10305 was a crowning glory for the entire castle series and had a lot of accents (e.g. Majisto), and here is practically a 1: 1 decal ... Therefore, if someone does not have the old one, it may be fun. They could have made a set accenting some old pirate sets like fortress+port+tavern and gave 3-4k. That's what they did with the castle and galaxy explorer, which is expanded and refreshed. And this fort is at the level of GwP forest hideout and blacktron, 1:1 calcs. Well, these were freebies, not the main bite.
You have created an enjoyable review. I agree, it is an iconic, beloved set for many reasons and the variety of functions it offers could keep kids and Lego fans occupied for hours. It is a perfect boredom killer. I have purchased the Pirates of Barracuda Bay in 2020 and it was absolutely worth it.
I agree with you about the red bricks on the new one and the color scheme. I'm also surprised they didn't use any textured white or yellow bricks like they did for the new castle set.
It's also a lot faster to draw the string/rope up and down compared to cranking on the new one. It's flimsy comparatively, but it feels much more to scale.
Great vid. 🏴☠️Man great run thru on the nostalgia 🏴☠️ old school set. And what the new set has got .I not into castle or pirates.sets but I do have baracuta bay ship set and castle from skull castle roller coaster set. 😊.👍👍
This is a 18+ plus set, and it is like a tribute to the old one. The original had a great design but for me the brick build is better and in general more" Lego coherent".
OK 215$ for this set when compared to old price 161$ (after inflation) and looking at all the extra brigs (much flatter base plate), modularity + extra ship is rly great price. I know the old base is iconic, but this is just like a bigger version 2.0 and because of that better.
so im wondering with so much lego on the walls, ceiling and everywhere else. is most time spend building nowadays or dusting everything off thats build already.
Dude, dude...dude. Those windows with the Spanish tiles.... OMG yes!!! Then, you can take it apart in sections and rebuild the set!!!! WHAT??? However, no matter how cool, and upgraded the new version is... if the canons don't fire its lame, period. End of story. Being a kid with the cannons that fire Lego cannon balls so much fun... and so much potential to lose pieces, lol. Still remember a friend of mine came over and we were shooting those cannons off at each other from across the hallway. So much fun!!!
It needed to be bigger. I feel it was hobbled by its budget. It’s just too similar to the original and needed to be built out. What I like about these new reimagined sets, is that the feel like logical extension where real workable spaces for the minifigs. That governors office is where those improvements should be made.
With the old set. That pull the string part I'm Shaw back then the designer could of yoused a truck rim for the string to wrap around and wind up ..now with Thea's ree make it s like. ..Pimp my set up. 😊..😂👌💥. I think I might have to get this set ..😊.I would like to have the old school one and the new school set.
I will 100% get this set but i also hope LEGO will reboot Fort Legoredo Edit: Now that i have Eldorado i really hope that they reboot the trading outpost
I would like most for them to focus on a classic series and not jump around too much, giving us like 5-6 sets for castle, then pirates, then western..... sigh... There are a few comments I have seen that said they wished they got the baracuda bay if knowing they would make this some years later... but then its hard to collect things when they are that spread apart and for so long lack context.
Its kinda amazing he never fell of the stairs while walking backwards or bumb something off the wall this dude is a legend
Maybe he cuts it out, one day we might get a "walking back and falling" compilation, haha.
Perhaps the addition of red brick is intended to show how time has aged the fortress since its original release in 1989
Controversial but I prefer the newer version. I prefer it's look, the cool hidden easter eggs and the modular capability. I cannot wait to get this.
@@jstarsc0mmi dont see the problem with the sail
That's controversial? To me the new one is clearly superior
This is such a cool remake
The original one looks so good because of the base plate and the simplicity.

I have extremely bad memories related to base plate in reason of being regularly beaten by my lil sister with castle baseplate 🥲

My only compliant is the crane. I feel like it is too big for the Fortress.
MOC and downsize it.
It looks nice but the scaling is off, you are right

"Old set" VS "how you remembered old set as a kid"
The origional has much better symmetry and proportions. The new one shines when pulled out into modular but the origional is the best looking lego model ever (except maybe black knights castle)
The original has that undeniable charm, which just goes to show that you can't replicate the past. That classic pirates theme was amazing.
And the LEGO minifigures didn't have a horny/degenerate/manic expression in their faces as newer sets have since year 2000.
