Saw one of these when I was up on a mountain in the Lozoya valley of Spain on Monday 22nd April. A lovely foxy/dark brown bird flew just a couple of feet above the ground over the very spot where I had finished my climb and arrived on the pathway. I thought it was just a hawk at first, but when I looked it up its colours were exactly like a Golden Eagle's. Magic. I'll never forget it for as long as I live.

I was out looking for bald eagles today & got to see a juvenile golden eagle. I had never seen one, so I had to look it up when I got home to see what it was...absolutely beautiful & totally unexpected.
husband saw one at my aunt's funeral at the chapel which is located in LA area. The grounds there are beautiful. Cousin says he has never seen one and he is lived there all of his 50 something years. My husband though is always on the watch for animals, birds so I'm not surprised he saw one although it was awesome to see one on that day

I used to go Golden Eagle watching in my area in Winter. Migrating Goldens liked the jackrabbits that lived in the vineyards. Most of the birds were juveniles. They were easy to tell from other birds of prey by sheer size.
I see them seldom now because of urban sprawl. It makes me sad.

@Studiorondo It was really surreal. I had seen a large bird drop down in the grass of the marsh area. I was driving my Jeep very slowly on the adjacent gravel road. When i got right next to where the bird dropped down (maybe about 20 feet from me), it took flight again...it was huge & just a beautiful bird. Probably the chance encounter of a lifetime...
I remember visiting the Centre, a while ago, i believe it was Orla's first flight, she glided over the loch, and smacked into a tree. Poor trainer had to make his way over and untangle her from the tree. Was funny. Never knew they need training in flying also. Good to see she has earned her wings now :)

Just to correct any misunderstanding. Orla has never flown over the loch, her first free flight was at the end of November '10. She has never become tangled in a tree, as she seldom lands on them. She flies mainly in open ground, so I do not know which bird "geckopow" saw, or if indeed it was at my centre as we are miles from the loch.

Orla is a trained hunting bird. she flies completely free, and chooses to return to me because she wants to, as the bond between us is quite strong.
Stewart Robertson you have actually flown her at quarry? You like your photography but never seen this eagle in the Hawking field.....
Iv seen 23 golds in lanikshire they usaly seen in woods and flat land scape with 35 trees.

You have seen Buzzards. No Golden Eagles in Lanarkshire. I assume it is Lanarkshire you meant ? Another thing, Golden Eagles tend to inhabit wide open spaces, nesting on cliffs or secluded ground and very large trees in Caledonian forest.
