Dodging Coral in the Bahamas! | Distant Shores

- Crossing the Yellow Banks from Nassau we're watching out for coral heads. Its over 30 miles across and we get the drone in the air to see what the coral looks like from above.
We also visit the Berry Islands - where we visited 30 years earlier and first realized we could have a little corner of paradise all to ourselves. We dive in a Blue Hole which is in the middle of the island.
Then we head on to Staniel Cay in the Exumas and join in the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

I was daydreaming in heaven until they landed in Nassau and the Atlantis hotel, then the nightmares began. The demons went away the minute they left that tourist trap. Yes, I've been to that hotel and Staniel key, but am mostly in "trance" when you guys sail at 5 knots thru the corals and sand banks!

2:05 One meter tide! I would kill for a one meter tide!. On a good day the tides will only be around 4.5 to 5 feet, but on a bad day they can be well over 7 feet, or over 2 meters by me here in NYC. I like that your boat has a swing keel. None of mine do. I delivered a Sabre 34 down the coast a few years ago and it had one. Your videos have made me think again about getting one. Thanks again for another great video!

Pretty much the same thing as a Cenote or sink holes in a Karst. The "hole" is made when the roof of an underground eroded cave collapses. Further erosion from above then can enlarge the hole.
love the exumas overall, especially when we're expecting a major overnight dump in Ottawa.

The hole is round because it's a collapsed cave shaped like a dome. Ice age sea level was a lot lower 20 thousand years ago, and that hole was a dry cave.

Great channel and I am quite envious of the lifting keel Southerlys. Question: Can you use sonar, like the forward-looking units to help identify coral and distinguish it from seagrass?
I've got about the same history as you guys down there. My first sail over there was on a 4 foot draft Morgan 38 in 1987. The first time we crossed the Yellow Banks, I was pretty scared. It sounded really scary. But, now many years later, I have taken it as a mission to ask every single person I meet in the Bahamas if they know of anyone, who has actually hit a coral reef head on the Yellow Banks. I haven't found anyone yet, and I suspect there is more water over most of these coral heads than most people think. One day, I want to actually dive a few them and see. But, until then, we still steer around those ink blots when we see them!
We actually did hit one on the passage between Exumas North to Eleuthera. Big bump😅

@@DistantShoresTV , well that answers that! When I was younger, we would tow one of us behind the sailboat with a mask and snorkel, and we would try and sail directly over the coral heads. If the dragger spotted a lobster (usually just their antenna sticking out) he would let go of the tow rope and we would circle back around and dive on the coral head to get the lobster. It's just me and my wife these days, and I'm scared she wouldn't turn around and come back!

They are Elvstrom Epex exotic sails with a white covering to protect against UV❤️
Looking forward what if a carbon fibre telescopic pole could be raised from the mast top with a HD camera say +- 170 meter from deck for real time vision of under water obstacles as a substitute to a flying drone, this is possible with current technology?

How can a person volunteer to be a hand on a boat during a crossing? I know only what I’ve seen and read regarding sailing, and I think being a hand would be a great way to learn.

Hi. I have been thinking about buying a sailboat. I have never sailed before but I did own a 33 foot Bertram for many years. Any recommendations?

ASA American Sailing Association has sailing classes everywhere, take the 3 day bare boat training course, then follow up with the coastal cruising course before you think about buying. And if you learn you love the mechanics of sailing, bare boat charter a few times before buying. I know people who get seasick at the dock and half the sailers I know don’t sail with their wives because they get sick always. It takes years to get instinctive at sailing and what you don’t know will kill you so take the proper steps to see if it is something you love doing, and if you don’t love it don’t buy a boat.
Troy Stanton , that information you just said is 100% right and I would go a little more and after all the course join yacht club and go on other yachts until you know what you want. Everyone is looking for crew at yacht club.
