    I have four young gray squirrels in my yard that were born in a large bird box we call the "squirrel mansion." It's fun to see them wrestling each other and running over when I give them snacks.

    They bread twice per year, the babies born in Fall will stay with their mom through the winter and the tree chasing is often times the mom and babies. ❤️❤️❤️ They make wonderful domestic house pets, if you love and cuddle them enough, they potty train nicely after the first 6 months of love and nurture, are very obedient to house rules. They are amazing actually and I wish more people could understand how much like domestic house cats they are.

      @@choossuck7653 first don’t blame yourself if the squirrel doesn’t as there are several variables that affect how close they come; past negative experience with other humans (they remember their whole life), if you have other pet smells on your clothing or hand that may make them fearful (or even hand lotion or sanitizer smells), making too much direct eye contact makes them fearful, any movement, inconsistencies in your feeding location (they are afraid of changes or inconsistencies in their environment), they may be on high alert if the area you are feeding in has predators. Be consistent, don’t move or if you make direct eye contact just look away like they are no big deal. If there is too much food in your area they may have no reason to risk getting closer. Organic walnuts, and organic pecans with or without shell are best (Costco has best price for these nuts). Start with a plate of nuts 10 feet away, then each week move it 1 foot closer. That should do it. If you can’t be there everyday, at least get the food out there everyday. Squirrels and birds go together, so you will have lots of birds, the squirrels make a big mess with all the nuts and the birds alert the squirrels if there is danger.

    Where I live, these guys are the native squirrels. They're cool little guys.
    But I hate when I'm driving in my neighborhood, and one decides to cross the street, only see me coming and stop, only to go back in the other direction last minute, causing me slam my brakes because I don't wanna hit them lol

    You'll find the gray squirrel is very smart and less destructive than a house cat. Every time a house cat is allowed to just wander around outside on its own for hours on end it is stalking and killing songbirds and squirrels. That cat doesn't care which color the squirrel is. It just wants to kill any animal that is smaller than it is. I've watched cats run down the sewers at night as I pull into my neighborhood. The same cats are then let back in the house and people cuddle them, let them walk on their kitchen countertops, and let them in their beds after they just ran all through the sewers.
    People are oblivious about their cats. Thinking it's okay for their cat to go through other people's flower beds and yards. Killing anything moving.

    Constant pressure year on year with a growing population will only have one result.
    Grey squirrels eat song-bird chicks and eggs. Research carried out by the Game Conservancy and Wildlife Trust demonstrates that grey squirrels have an adverse impact on many native woodland birds, reducing fledging rates by an average of 15%.

    • @auspiciouscloud8786
      @auspiciouscloud8786 Před rokem

      Not Gray squirrels as there are 2 types, one that is the Eastern Gray and one that is the Western Gray. The Western Gray may still be endangered…. They kill birds when the birds build their nests too close to the squirrels food source (the male squirrels will also eat their own squirrel babies if food is abundant, to protect their supply). Squirrels and birds go together, squirrels make a big nut mess that provides abundant food for birds, birds help alert squirrels to danger too. FYI birds eat squirrel babies too.

      In the wild 2 to 8 years, domestically up to 20 years. Diet is really important, domestically they need low oxalate foods as oxalates prevent calcium absorption, cherry juice helps remove oxalates. They need lots of calcium please research metabolic bone disease. If they get bald patches it can be from oxalates, if it’s not from mites.

    Nice video! I'm from North Carolina, USA and eastern gray squirrel is actually the state mammal , but illegal to be kept as a pet. They are very smart adorable creatures but can be real neusence too. Actually it's not uncommon for people to eat them in the States believe it or not.

      I'm from Idaho where grays are an unprotected species and it's legal to own them as pets, and though I've never sought one out I always thought they were neat little creatures. Well, this year a family friend found 5 babies in a camper bought from out of state... i helped rehabilitate the babies and ended up falling in love with one, and she returned the favor. ( I personally love my squirrel Fae and I think owning her is very rewarding and fun and enriching.. But that being said I don't think they're a pet anyone should look for or try to acquire purposefully, because they do live their best lives in the wild. But situations arise where things have to be done. )

    You failed to mention that grey squirrels also eat birds eggs & chicks. They will also build a nest on top of a birds nest that has been freshly made by a bird & in turn oust the bird so the poor bird has lost it's nest site, which brings on the further decline of song birds. I prefer to shoot them rather watch them ☠️

    Achingly cute, highly intelligent, endearingly cheeky and endlessly entertaining. I know it's not PC to say this but I prefer the greys as they seem to be much more human friendly. Hand-feeding them is great fun. I know the reds must be protected and re-introduced in some ares but this doesn't mean the greys should be totally exterminated as some people suggest. If you go back far enough, most of our domesticated animals, flowers, fruit, all horses etc. were introduced from outside the U.K.
