To be fair, its the government literally kill the entertainment industry. High censorship. High involvement on script writing. A lot of the scripts had to much the current agenda of the government and not of freewill of creativity from the writers. Theres no 100% true freedom of creativity in SIngapore now. Stuff thats too bold, too daring, too controversial, too out of box, too liberal will be cut off, will be censored, will be demeaned. Even all the big directors, producers and writers from Hong Kong whom came to SIngapore to make great drama in the 70s and 80s had slowly exodus back to Hongkong by the late 90s. Even in the west, creative crew one by one exodus back to their homeland, as they felt only making films and drama to fit the agenda of the country is restricting their creativity.
Shouldn't blame the government, it is purely due to bad business practises. I refer to that period of time just after 2000 when they flood the SG drama scene with all the Holland V, Toa Payoh dramas in an all-out bid to force down Channel U. All the boring TV drama started from then, and after the war is over and their battle is done, they have already lost all their viewership.

I work in the creative industry so i know alot of mainstream whether its publishing, advertising, entertainment and etc.. is controlled by the government from behind. Outwardly looks like promoting art but still heavily controlling the production. Need to flow with their agenda. A true good movie, a good book, a good painting is to flow with the scriptwriter, the director, the author, the artist and NOT ANYONE else. This is also the reason why the mass exodus of top notch creative people from East and West out of SIngapore. The top are not liberal and do not show 100% of their works. If im in their shoes, as a top notch script writer must twist and turn my works to suit your poltical agenda. I will pack my luggage and leave too.
Hongkong now is slowly following SIngapore's fate too. I had handle many clients east and west in the field of Advertising and Design. I can see a trend. In some parts of Europe and United States, the culture is "I hire you is I like your style of Design." In Asia, especially Chinese society is "I hire you is you must do my style of Design" More of a worker than a designer. Must flow 100% with other's agenda, no freedom of creativity.
this should be the song depicting the images of our ancestors who sailed down the south china sea南洋 in their little crowded junks thru the straits of Malacca to our island where they settled and called home. they really fought for their dreams 漂洋过海吃得起苦 perfect song for the spirit these pioneers had!
It wasn't their dreams, it was somewhat a matter of life and death because "走出去就有路“ and "飄洋過海我吃的起苦，相信天無絕人之路" depicted and implied the terrible conditions back home. Stay and starve to death or go, many of our ancestors do not have a choice.
