  • It's not winter, but still, water temperatures were down when Marsh Man Masson set out to find fish in the South Louisiana marsh. Every other condition screamed for throwing topwater plugs, so that's what Marsh Man did, and he was rewarded.
    It was a great start to what turned out to be an epic day!

    Great video and VERY nice trout. That's the size of the biggest trout I've personally caught, but the funny thing is, TRUE STORY....it was just one of those magical nights where my then brother-in-law and myself each limited out, ( this was back around 1986 or 87, so I can't recall if the limit was 6 fish or 9 fish each ) and every trout was between 3 and 5 lbs. Talk about a handsome stringer of fish. We had been fishing the inlet side of Sebastion Inlet late that afternoon, and nothing in particular was running, except birds picking off our live shrimp more than usual. The day was so bad, we decided to hit the bait shop & buy some more hand picked large live shrimp & try night fishing there, because the birds would be gone. We decided to stay fishing on the rocks just before the jetty structure begins. It was the one of the coldest nights of an unusually harsh winter for east/central Florida. For well over an hour in complete darkness, we hadn't got a bite from anything. Frustrated, my brother in law tied on a standard original Mirro-Lure & proceeded to catch a 4 lb trout on the 1st or 2nd cast. We told each other: "They have FINALLY arrived" and I was soaking that big live shrimp in total confidence now. But nothing bit. Darryl started catching nice trout of at least 3 lbs and had caught 3 to that point. We both thought that was odd, so I quickly tied on an identical Mirro-Lure on a separate rod. BAM.......right away, began catching large trout on about every 3rd cast, just like Darryl. Yet NOTHING would touch those large live shrimp still soaking on different rods. Weird I tell ya. Within 15 minutes or so, we both limited out, and not a single trout weighed less than 3 lbs, and nearly half of them were between 4 and 5 lbs!!! We kept fishing just for fun, catch & release, and continued to catch these whopper trout 1 right after the other, in hopes of a huge gator trout. This would continue for close to an hour, and we had the entire jetty to ourselves. But then Darryl slipped on the wet rocks while landing a fish and fell in that freezing cold water. His lips turned blue immediately and we had to leave to get him into some warm, dry clothes. We stopped at the bait shop that was still open, and everyone there flipped out at such an awesome stringer of BIG trout. The owner took our picture with the fish, and said we would DEFINITELY be the feature picture & story in Sunday's fishing report in the Florida Today Newspaper. But we got bumped due to someone catching a single 10 lb gator trout. But everyone agreed that OUR story was the more interesting, because NO ONE had predicted there would be such a nice trout run containing LARGE fish on that cold night. The very next winter when a major cold front had just pushed the temps way down, Darryl showed up at my door as a surprise, to go try the same thing at the same place. But I had other obligations & couldn't go. He shows up at my door the following morning right at sunrise, with a huge 9 lb 14 oz trout. But he said it was one of the very few trout that he caught all night. So we really did experience a magical night the year before. ( But of course a near 10 lb gator trout is nothing to scoff at, lol. ) Back around that time, I personally witnessed a huge trout in the holding tank at the bait shop, still perfectly healthy, that weighed just shy of 14 lbs. Folks, if you've never seen a spotted sea trout OVER 12 lbs alive in a tank.........it is a sight to behold. I can't recall it's exact measurement, but I know it had to be around 39" OR LONGER!!! And I was looking right down on it in a shallow holding tank, only inches from my eyes. ( This fish was soon released. ) NO WONDER they call the truly big ones: "Gator Trout"...........they are awesome to see. And VERY rare these days.

      I spent Friday fishing the Grand Bay reserve with the Two Hooks kayak fishing team. These guys are outstanding anglers, and our plan was to find some really big speckled trout. I Started out throwing my favorite new soft plastic. It’s a minnow imitation by Unfair Lures called the smack Shad. The first spot was all redfish. Several rats with one nice 22” slot. We made a move to deeper water and Immediately started finding 13 to 17 inch trout. We caught loads of fish there, but made another move to try and find the really big girls. I found a fat 21 inch trout after wading through more small fish but couldn’t find the target four plus pounder. One of the Two Hooks guys hooked a true giant on a Paul Brown Fat Boy. Got her right to the net and broke off. Estimate was 25-27 inches, 5-6 pounds. Overall an awesome trip with some great guys.

      When I was throwing the smack Shad, I was using my best Marshman technique. Really trying to stay in contact with the Lure throughout the entire rise and fall of the bait. It worked great! I converted so many more hits than I have in the past using my sloppy old technique. Can’t thank you enough!

I hooked a true giant on Dauphin Island this summer on a magneto matrix Shad, but she did the most violent jumping head shake I’ve ever seen and spit it back in my face. Thanks for the reply’s Todd!

    I've often wondered why our marsh bass don't get that big - it certainly isn't due to a lack of food. Perhaps it's because, unlike a typical lake, they aren't at the top of the food chain; the competition with redfish, etc limits their size, and perhaps as you mentioned, their life span. I know that's the case with trout in the Smokies - the rocks are so old, all the nutrients have been leached out, so the water isn't that fertile, and there is just so many groceries to go around. The whole life span is sped up, so that a 3 year old fish is past middle age.

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  Před 5 lety +1

      Bass definitely do not assume the trophic position in our marshes, and I'm sure that plays some role in their relatively diminutive size, but the bigger factor is environmental. They have an endless supply of groceries, which is why they get so fat so quickly, but when that salt water pushes in, it really clubs them in the head.

It was a red colored plastic and I measured, videoed and subsequently released the fish. I was excited initially (my 1st fish with a tag) and then disappointed that I couldn't get through.
      I LOVE the idea of tracking fish for many reasons (especially for the welfare and conservation of the fishes) but was saddened by the unanswered call (I tried again the next day).
      If I ever catch another tagged fish, I will definitely attempt to report again. Next time, I hope the call picks up!
      I frankly, was hoping it was the STAR fish! 🤩😉😎

      Marsh Man Masson ok I was just wondering because I caught one Saturday in a cut off of the ICW by Lake Catherine with a yellow tag and I called the number on the tag but I also didn’t get anyone on the line so I went on the website and entered all the info. The tag was number LV355075 and it was in a 19.5 inch redfish.

      If it's a red tag, it WAS a STAR fish. If you caught it in the spring, however, it wasn't eligible for any prizes. The STAR runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so it was probably a fish from the previous STAR that had remained free. Hopefully you'll be as lucky this summer, @@farmslug

    Can anyone tell me why these were named speckled trout, when they are not in the trout or salmon family?

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  Před 5 lety

      They're spotted sea trout. Speckled trout is a colloquialism. The scientific name is Cynoscion nebulosus.

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  Před 5 lety +1

      There's just no point, in my view. They're not big enough to mount, and they taste terrible. I'd rather let it go and grow in hopes that someone can catch it when it IS big enough to mount.

    I'm really curious why people down south think that's ok to grab a fish by the gills when releasing a fish.. Enjoy your videos man, but that is not good fishing etiquette. Tight lines

    do you and your son make baits for matrix

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  Před 5 lety +1

      No, Joel asked the owner of the company, Chas Champagne, to make a clear bait with blue, green and silver flecks. Chas did, and named it Holy Joely in Joel's honor. Joel doesn't get any kickbacks or residuals from sales of the bait.

      I had NO idea that bait had to do with Joel! Now I get it! I am so happy to hear that. What a wonderful proudful Dad you must be! Not just because of the named dedication of the lure, but because it works here in South Louisiana SOOOO well!
      I absolutely love that lure and it has caught me more fish than ANY I have ever tried. Honestly, I had given up on artificial because I just didn't get results.
      I have caught all variety of fish on it and I now have a strong confidence in the results that it provides. I like my Shrimp Creole in slightly hazier water, but there is nothing like the satisfaction of the Holey Joely in clean water.
      I was thrilled to hear about this idea and partnership. I'm glad your son and Mr. Champagne came up with such an effective lure. Go ahead on, y'all! 🎣

      It's technically not a trout species, even though that's what everyone along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts calls them. The scientific term for the fish is Cynoscion nebulosus. It's definitely not the world's most-powerful fish, but there's something about them that makes them irresistible.
