    Great design. As for preferences: matte finish and flush screw heads. And YES, the screw slots MUST all align in the same direction when done. As for content, I'm loving all of the DIY/how-to content. I get it that the ultimate goal is to go sailing but, for those of us who own boats and have our own visionary ideas of outfitting them, your material is priceless. Besides, as a nerdgineer, it's just cool and entertaining.

    Matte Black for the win! Incredible first try, love that you're not afraid to dive into new tech! Maybe you're over-ambitious to some, but way too many people won't even try to stretch themselves to learn something new. The feeling you get when you've accomplished a new project, learned a new skill, achieved a new personal win - so great! Sail on brother!!

    I’d go for recessed Torx screws, the matte black and keep the bilge switches and fuses the way they are for visual consistency - touching the fuse caps has no effect on the functioning of the switches. Good luck with the second attempt. Love what you’re doing!

    Great video! I, too, prefer the look of the matte finish acrylic, and the flush when on breakers are a good choice. I think the flat screw heads have a nicer finished look. Beyond those things, I recommend electric breaker/fuse switches over older fuses (those glass tube fuses can be a pain and I have had issues with the glass fuses corroding even before they were put into use), and since you have some extra acrylic, maybe consider a full sized cut out for the V-Touch 70 to make it flush mount and glue/attach some acrylic on the back side for mounting purposes. All the best!

    Machining plastic especially with a Laser will build heat within the material. Plastic will grow considerably even more then .030” with what it sort of looked like. If heat build up is a problem consider doing the process in steps allowing a cool down phase.
    Personally, I like the Flush screws better then the button head screws and the satin finish side is better also.

    I have an Atomstack S20 up here in Melbourne and sometimes you just can't use the honeycomb bed. In your case you just might want to use a sheet metal or plywood waste board. In the past I used plywood with tacks driven through with the heads flush spaced every 1 to 2 inches apart on a grid, that way your air assist will work properly on the through cuts. I use a large headed nail instead of screws which are harder to get them all protruding at the same height. Obviously you will put your workpiece on the side with the nail points up. Also may want to weigh your workpiece down with a couple of weights that you can very carefully move around one at a time while the piece is cutting so the laser head doesn't hit them, while not bumping the piece out of registration. Highly recommend that you air cut it first for maybe half the job, without the laser firing(or maybe on very low power just enough to score the paper backing), just to get comfortable with how the D1 is going to track and practice moving the weights around without bumping it.

    Don't look at it as a failure it was a prototype OQ build: did the process work? Did the machine work? Did the materials work? You found things that worked and things that didn't you now have steps in place to move forward and try again. A fail would have been well crap this happened now I'm back to paying that other company for the breakers and bigger panels.
    Keep it up you got this!

    Hi Mr. T, I would split the entire panel into matching pieces. sure, then you actually have visible joints in the entire view. but, this saves a lot of time and nerves and the purchase of an extension. I can already hear you saying - this is not my claim - you are right. the panel, for example divided into four parts, wouldn't look so bad. good luck & greatings from germany !

Put screws in holes for section one holes to register panel as you move it to section 2 etc. time well spent = better job and frequently less time

    For starters, don't be concerned by those saying "Isn't this supposed to be a sailing channel?!?"
    I personally enjoy the boat work videos from all of the sailing CZcamsrs just as much, if not more than the cruising content. But maybe that's just me.
    Anyway..
    Matte black and flush mount screws for sure.
    Also, I agree with spreading out the bilge switches and their corresponding fuses a little further.
    All in all, the new tech nowadays can be very daunting to get a grasp on. It's completely understandable that with only 2 days (I'm guessing a total of 15-20 hours total time over 2 days) of messing around the with new machine and the different software systems, this can happen. Luckily it wasn't a thousand dollar piece of material. Eat that $25, learn from it, and get it right the next time around!
    Keep at it Dauntless crew! I'm looking forward to seeing you cruising the world!

    Maybe you should try various double sided tapes to hold the panel in place on the work table. Thicker tape might take out the sag as the cutting continues. Careful placement so it's not in the line of 'fire'. Know that some wood cutting devices use a vacuum table to hold the work.

  • @Cubamara

    One very popular sailing channel took 10 years to get their catamaran into the water. So what are people complaining about?
    My only complaint is never realizing I wanted something on my catamaran until I watched your videos. Would like to see you do less stuff I can't do and must pay for to have it done. It's a continuous WTF experience. Starting with a resurrection of a catamaran most would walk away from after seeing the amount of damage.
    If I want to see sailing I watch a home video the wife took. Gives me time to edit out all the stuff that can possibly be used as evidence at a later date.

    Learning anything new that complex is challenging to say the least. Trying to learn how to use a new tool AND two new pieces of software just compounds the complexity exponentially. You learned from the experience and have a plan to fix it so Kudos to you for that. The matte side looks best for the reasons you mentioned with the fingerprints, plus it doesn’t glare back at you if you need to use a flashlight to see something.

  • @GodlessDad
    @GodlessDad Před rokem +1

    Def the flush screws and the matte black. It's gonna look better than you'd have gotten from BSS just because it's custom and you got to make multiple versions of it. V1 is never as good as V2 on projects like that, I find.

  • @SailingSVPipedream
    @SailingSVPipedream Před rokem

    Looks really cool. It’s interesting to see how you do it as my boat is completely the opposite. I only have two relays and those are for the engines’ glow plugs. I do have some Victron stuff - 1 MPPT, 1 inverter, 24/12 converter and two very small battery chargers; otherwise everything is analogue. I went the ridiculously simple route, which has advantages but is not quite as cool - literally as for me AC is just open a hatch. Anyway looking good and don’t worry about the sailing bit. Pure Sailing channels get boring really quick, I mean beach barbecue, catch a fish, get seasick, nice sunset and then repeat ad nauseam…

  • @theromihs
    @theromihs Před rokem

    Yeah, that matt finish looks great.
    Regarding the screws, I also prefer the countersunk heads, however I would be concerned with the strength of the acrylic. It's thin acrylic for such a large panel, will you be providing some additional support to it? The pressure required to toggle the breakers gets transferred to the acrylic as it bows under the pressure, resulting in all the forces being transferred through the screws.

  • @rl3898
    @rl3898 Před rokem

    Had all those troubles on an earlier system, well done so far.
    I'm worried you aren't supporting the panel enough for the finished article, when you push rockers in the mid spans and the panel bends.
    There seems little free space for stiffening struts to be used!

    You can add a laser crosshair and a camera to your machine, those can both be calibrated in the software like Lightburn. They dont need to be official accessories u can easily DIY those - theres nice videos on yt documenting the process. With the crosshair u can easily manually position the diode to the desired starting location and the camera allows you to track the position and progress but also has other uses like scanning the outline of the material. Dont get discouraged by the learning curve, im confident you will master it and its definatelly cool to watch. The extension kit in my opinion is the easiest way, to solve you current issue, but id still add both the crosshair and the camera since its not much of an investment.

If not for forgetting to rehome that and the last booboo, I think you could have just filed down where it shifted and it would not have been noticeable at all.... and that was your first try! Awesome job!!! Frankly, it took my 5 or 6 tries to just print a term paper in college. So... you gain experience and try again!

Had to get out my Swiss army knife with the file to trim the metal edges of the bayonet. Unusual - yes - but glad it was during a check ride.
