You know, if she hadn't said that this was fate, we'd probably not mind staying. Because I bet in our mind, all we could think about when she said that was that she was saying it was fate that our family and so many of our friends died so cruelly and we were blamed for it. We should talk to her and explain that. Maybe tell her she doesn't have to stay isolated, that WE don't have to stay isolated. Not everyone will believe she's cursed or that we caused the sickness.

When it comes down to the monster girl universe, I’m not the biggest fan of centaurs. However, if one approached, I would not object because all mythical beings are pretty awesome at the end of the day
Gotta say this listener is pretty dumb for running away all the time. You know she just wants companionship so you could get your "freedom", whatever that means in this case, by just being nice to her. Hell you could probably convince her to help you travel around if you invited her to come with you. After all she knows way more about survival than you do and is stronger, faster, more aware, etc. I really just don't understand trying to run away from someone who could be your most important ally. Who wants to bet he ran out in a blind panic instead of being quiet and more aware of his surroundings and ran right into a pack of wolves. Second if your going to make your escape from someone who can out run you, you need to think a head. Plan routes the thicker the woods means she would have to slow down but higher chances of running into predators, Third using streams or rivers is good to hide your tracks but you risk running into predators. However if the Centaur looks like the picture I'd rather convince her to come with me out of the woods and go see the world. Just saying

Then the plague would spread from horse to horse, then spread to the humans, leading to the protagonist to be blamed for the humans getting infected, and then exiled. That all would make him vow to hate all horses of any kind for as long as there was a breath in his lungs. I bet that would make the centaur understand the protagonist’s situation a lot more, and bring this trilogy full-circle.
I have a feeling that the wolves *weren't* the ones that killed the listener, I think the listener couldn't take the centaur shenanigans anymore and decided to commit suicide

I think the issue the protagonist has is because of the freedom, there's an old fable I love, a wolf was starving, and it came to find a dog, plump and healthy. It asks the dog how it got so well-fed, and the dog replies, "I get fed by the humans, I keep them company and they feed me" The wolf was about to ask how he could get in on this action, but then he noticed something, "What's wrong with your neck?" He asks, curious as to why the dog's neck has been rubbed raw. "Oh, that's just the mark from the collar and the chain the humans use." The dog replies. The wolf chafed at this. "You can keep your food," says the wolf, "I'd rather starve and freeze than lose my liberty"
I'm thinking that by the time the sequel rolls around i'm pretty sure that both the centaur and the listener might be patching each other up and then probably end up confessing to each other or something I don't know
Hmmm.... that's one possibility. Another is her skeleton being found clinging to his ala the Hunchback from Notre Dam. Or she could have his corpse sitting at the table to greet her every day. Or she could have stew meat for awhile. Decisions, decisions.....
