  • What does it mean to be a Jerry? And why do so many people hate him?
Sure, he’s weak, afraid, and insecure but he’s so much more!
This video tries to explore why by deep diving into the fringes of the infamous Rick and Morty fan base.

That's true but he's also so weak he's unable to stand up for himself, he instead, lets everyone walk all over him while being passive aggressive and complaining about it. He's also unambitious. He's a textbook example of an enabler. Let's say you see a rattlesnake on the ground. Everyone tells you not to pick it up but you pick it up anyway and it bites you so you have to go through a lot of painful treatment. And then the next time you see a rattlesnake you pick it up again and it bites you again. And so you complain and then that happens again and again and again and you keep complaining without ever doing anything about it. It would be so easy to just not pick up the f****** rattlesnake. But enablers continue to pick up the rattlesnake. At some point it's not the rattlesnake's fault for biting you it's your own fault for continually picking it up. That's what a Jerry is to me. Enablers love to play the victim. They love to complain about how badly they're being treated but they refuse to do anything about it and continue to allow the person to treat them badly. They continue to protect them from the consequences of their actions, continue to make excuses for them, continue to refuse to cut them off all the while complaining about it. That's what a Jerry is. But literally every other character is flawed as well. Most people don't genuinely think Rick is the best LMAO I just think most people know an enabler (or have known) an enabler in real life and they hate Jerry because it's subconsciously reminds them of that person. Beth is a selfish b**** with major daddy issues. Most people don't like her but they also don't hate her like they do jerry.

@@WhitneyDahlin I disagree, I see Jerry as a realistic part of society that makes many mistakes, but learns from them. Instead of "picking up a rattle snake" Jerry tries to do what's best for his family- while not being good at it, he gets better over time, and continues to grow as a person. Not everyone is granted with the strength to speak out or stand up for yourself, it takes pain and suffering to bring that person beyond they're limits. He has to endure the pain from society, his family, Rick, and nature throw at him when he tries to obtain a smidgen of happiness, but does he quit? No, he stands back up, brushes off the insults, and attempts to live his happiest life against all odds. And to end this, people can tell you not to do something, cause it may hurt you- but if that very thing is in the way of your happiness, will you sit there and be consumed by the fear of the pain? Like Rick? Or will you defy all expectations, and and keep marching on with a smile? Like Jerry.

I'd like to also add that his bravery can be viewed as average. Save for the homeless guy debacle, he's had times where he rose to the occasion and took his place as head and leader of the household like when everybody was infected with Rick's bug virus. The true irony of the fandom that shits on his character due to what they view as cowardice fail to realize the scale of what Jerry cowers against. They mock him but if the roles were reversed and they had to face the same threats and dangers of the Rick and Morty world a good 95% would be a "Jerry." This man is an audience insert. We already panic with possible human wars, pandemics, supply shortages, etc. Where Jerry's faced the end of the world and galaxy multiple times, being kidnapped by aliens, being hunted, minding his business and being transported away to unknown places like come on. No normal and mentally sound person would be able to (or would want to) handle a fraction of the stuff he's had to survive while on top of having the rest of the family you're trying to keep together side with the person that's brings all of the chaos into your home while disrespecting you and making it seem like you're the problem. Jerry is not my favorite character and he's had times where he was an ass but usually it's in response to what's going on around him. He's never intentionally malicious which I cannot say about the rest of the cast including Morty. He is also the least to be influenced by Rick due to whatever dumb rivalry he has which should give him points at not always being some following sheep. And to be honest if it came down to it if I were forced to hang out with anyone of the characters in the family surprisingly enough Jerry would be my first pick because at least I would be less likely dragged into some bs that would get me killed. Then if anyone else Morty due to him probably trying to help if something happens. Rick would be on some bs. And I don't really like Summer and Beth they feel like try hards to cover their painfully average personalities plus as I've said before they're naturally malicious which doesn't bode well in my book.

I sort of agree. Rick knows what happens after death, nothing, and he knows the universe is destined to decay. And so with death for everything being inevitable, he spends life an adrenaline junkie attempting to wring all the happiness from existence he can.
The reason he despises jerry is that he is happier, Rick knows all of the joys attainable but jerry can be happy with less.
Rick beats jerry down to try to make him feel like shit because he’s pissed jerry beat him in the only thing that matters: happiness, and by proxy: being content.

My biggest issue with Jerry has never been a perception that he is a loser, but rather that he is willfully manipulative. Both him and Rick seem to reflect 2 different aspects of emotional immaturity and toxicity. Jerry uses weaponized incompetence to make his life better. Rick is the embodiment of physical aggression and fear of emotions. Both Rick and Jerry have fragile ego's and don't like to give up their perceived power. Neither should be a role model, but I think that might be one of the things people miss. Rick is great at emotional manipulation, he does it frequently and is shown to lie to people's faces to break them down. He does this to Jerry non-stop. Jerry is always more successful and braver person without Rick's influence. When Rick talks down to Jerry and people clap and bring it up as proof of Jerry being an awful person? Then everyone blames Jerry instead of critically analyzing Rick's actions whatsoever. Jerry is absolutely a flawed character, but the same way the viewer is. Rick manipulates his families and the viewers perspectives to make them think theyre more like Rick then Jerry, same way rich ppl try to make ppl of different races/religions or other dumb tribalistic shit to kill each other so they don't focus on who's pulling the strings.

The under lying subtext however is that this version of Rick was at one time entirely different than most other Rick's.... but the pain of his life has molded him in a certain way to protect himself from the thing he can't bare to face.

Jerry reminds me of a scene from Boy Meets World when Cory disrespects his father Alan for being average. Alan expresses how being average was enough for him because it allowed him to support his family and seeing his son not respect him for not being something amazing hurt him profoundly.
Jerry is the same in a lot of ways, his wants are simple and that's what scares a lot of people. We grow up wanting to change the world or become incredible but eventually learn that only a handful of people make it that way. Rick tries to be that amazing person but after the latest season with Evil Morty we find out the cold truth of how he was lower than Jerry in a lot of ways. Where Jerry faced the issues in his life, although simple, he faced them in his own way. Rick chooses to run when things get to hard and not to a new reality but one rigged to his own benefits. That's beyond stupid, not even asking what does that controller is for, and fucking up the lifes of people he loves (which does constantly, like the decoy episode where a decoy jerry prefers everyone to die for him to be able to become "immortal" with a varnish). I hate stupid selfish people, and he represents that, and while Rick is mostly selfish, at least he aint stupid, and he has the ability to realize when he has been selfish and tries to do stuff about it (just 2 episodes that come to mind, the 2 crows episode and when he turned himself in to save the whole family, Jerry included)

    @TheWriter960 Před 2 lety +63

    Before the Video:
I was always under the impression that Jerry was viewed so negatively because he's passive, uneducated, and a follower. Which, none of those are inherently negative, but given the tone (and audience) of the show, those traits are viewed as such. Rick, and the show in general, views him as a leech, a parasite that subsists by latching onto larger (read: smarter) beings instead of being an active hunter. Rick and Beth both blame Jerry for Beth not being a Surgeon, because he latched onto Beth, and brought her down while simultaneously ignoring the fact that it takes two to tango. In the arc where Rick is imprisoned and aliens come to earth, Jerry is seen as passive for accepting the objectively better drugs and receiving a job from the stabilized infrastructure that the Alien government provided. The way the show frames Jerry is that he never does anything to try and improve his life, and even when he does, he's so stupid and ignorant that it only makes matters worse if it does anything at all. In the end, Jerry is, ultimately, judged for favoring the status quo. He's judged for not wanting to do anything to endanger his suburban dream of a nice-ish house, a beautiful wife, and two children. Meanwhile, Rick is lauded as a God for constantly shattering the status quo regardless of whether or not that gains him anything or not.
    After Watching:
I think you make a good point about Millenials, and I think that's part of why Jerry is so hated. Jerry is the older generation, fighting to maintain their place at the expense of the Millenial generation getting their dues. Meanwhile, Rick is viewed as some sort of...messiah, meant to come deliver us (morty) out from under Jerry's rein. He even comes out and says as much when Jerry and Beth split up. The issue being, Jerry isn't Gen X, or Boomers, Jerry is, like you said, Millenials, and he's as powerless in the show as we are in reality. Rick is actually the older generations, because the fact of the matter is, no matter how badly he fucks up, he has the resources to be completely unaffected by the consequences of those fuck-ups. Jerry is constantly blamed for bad things that happen because of someone else, usually Rick, and he can't defend himself because he's the lowest rung on the totem pole.

Jerry is (in my eyes) for Rick and Morty what Diane is for Bojack Horseman. They're characters that aren't gaslighting their problems, willing to grow and change and actually break the foil of an "unchanging sitcom character." In both instances, if you were to remove the characters from their respective shows there could be no growth, direction or voice in the series. They have pain and problems but they're the characters that show the audience that there are ways toward growth that aren't escapism from issues like Rick and Bojack. For Rick he took escapism so far as to recreate universe so that he can quickly jump ship and watch it burn if the slightest inconvenience happens. For Bojack it's his history of drugs, drinking, and just flaking on commitments when things aren't working out (or in the case of both creating issues to escape from when things are working.) Characters like Diane and Jerry are hated mostly because they don't fit in an episode of a show. They are as nuanced as life and growth. They don't move in straight lines, and they don't let the world the live in dictate their happiness. They prove time and time again that "sometimes life is shit, and you just keep living."

Characters are either charming or annoying. People form their own opinions but the writers invites audience to take certain opinions by the way they frame characters. Like the opening clip of this video, in a vulnerable moment the wind literally calls Jerry a loser. The show also frames Rick as the hero by, yes, showing is shortcomings and vulnerabilities but keeping him in as an ultimately aspirational figure. The show tries to go for "ever green" story telling. So, no matter what happens, by the end of each episode Jerry needs to be the loser and Rick needs to be the amazing genius again. The writers set up a certain status quo, break it, and then return to it so that you have an idea of what they are actually trying to say. in the first episode of season 6, we see an alternate jerry who has become mature, strong, and confident, even despite the hardships he faced in morty's original dimension. he may be treating his son like dirt, but he's also standing up for himself and the family that stood by him before they perished: something that the jerry most of the audience knows would never do because of his cowardice. even though this is a jerry from an alternate dimension, the differences between them aren't far off at all, and it just shows the capability jerry has.
in episode 3 of season 6, we also see more confidence with jerry. though he initially cocoons himself to demonstrate his cowardice, he later comes out of the shell to tell everyone to "grow up". he asserts his anger and disappointment at the beths for cheating on him, and instead of groveling at her feet to not leave him, or off himself as he said he would earlier in the episode, he packs his stuff to leave. jerry knows he's better than being disrespected in this manner, and he's not going to stand for it. then, he finally asserts his dominance by allowing the beths to fool around, as long as he approves it.
i love that the writers are making jerry a more confident and respectable character this season, and i hope the fandom accepts this evolved jerry with open arms

I used to hate Jerry, but in season 3 I started to appreciate him and in season 4 I enjoyed that he became independent to prove Rick wrong in the Christmas episode. He's also as you said happy with his life something that most of the family (especially Rick) isn't.
Also the reason why the rest of the family isn't happy is because Rick is dealing with the loss of his actual family. Also when Rick is ever vulnerable it gets ruined by some outside force or he's close to the brink of death.
Beth is unhappy because she is unsure of who she wants to be from a space traveller like her Dad or mother like she is in the present. Also her abandonment issues are a big part of that unhappiness even if she realizes it or not. This strained her realationship with Jerry im the early seasons because of that abandonment from her Dad's abandoning and supposed return of her Dad in their family life.
Summer is unhappy because she knows her parents didn't want her. Her romantic relationships with Ethan falled apart because he didn't appreciate her and devalued her. This is similar to how she feels that most of her family (especially Rick when he takes Morty on adventures and not her), making her feel worthless.
Morty is unhappy because he has to deal with Rick's and make sure that he doesn't kill them by accident like at the beginning of the show. He says in response to Rick when he asked him "how many have you defused" Morty replies "Too many Rick! Too many!" Their realationship. Morty thinks that Rick and the rest of his family see him as worthless he kinda of distracts himself with that fact with love interests and adventures with Rick.

So yes, Rick is super selfish, but Morty's unhappiness does not come from Rick, he was already super self conscious since episode 1, unable to talk to the girl he likes and making self depreciating jokes, Rick just makes that much more evident. I somewhat agree...the contrast between Jerry and Rick is a interesting one. One has a high EQ (Emotional Intelligence) the other a high IQ. But by Jerry lacking that wisdom, he is constantly manipulated by his own naivety. Yes Jerry can admit when he's wrong, aims to try and try again. he is still insecure in a lot of ways,, constantly backing down or running away from a challenge or threat.
So where Rick won't say he loves his family or trys to have fun days out with said family. He will often times go guns blazing to protect his family that by lore (spoliers lol) isn't technically his.

I think it mostly just boils down to the show itself telling us to dislike Jerry. It's the same situation as with Meg from Family Guy. The show tells us that she's ugly and stupid, despite nothing in her lines or looks proving that. She's drawn no uglier than other characters, bah, she's better looking design-wise than many other characters. But we accept this disdain for her for the joke's sake, and after a while we just internalise it - Meg is ugly and stupid and that's that.
Same with Jerry, he's constantly looked down upon by other characters and rarely gets shown in positive light, even if he ends up being in the right. Meanwhile Rick is the total opposite, despite being terrible, most of the time he gets his way, and even if he's called upon his bullshit, he still gets the time to shine and look cool, hence he's idolised. He's no Bojack Horseman, who is my gold standard for writing a sympathetic, and even likeable character who does despicable things as is generally terrible person. Bojack is never exused from the bad things he does, and is never shown as being cool for doing those things. We know where all of his bad behaviour is coming from, and we can symphatise with him, but he's never excusedfrom consequences of his actions. Rick most of the time gets what he wants regardless of how shitty he is, and looks cool doing it. Hence he's loved and looked up upon by some fans.

I used to like Pearl - until the Pink Diamond reveal. Then it didn't become about Pearl grieving her friend and mentor - it became an emotionally damaged and manipulated slave mouring its master. You can say that Pink Diamond "freed" Pearl and she wasn't her slave anymore..But that's not true. The last thing she does as Pink Diamond, is to COMMAND Pearl (a command she literally, physically, is incapable of breaking mind you) to never speak of her staged shattering. She forces Pearl to "kill" her and then never tell anybody about it.
That is extremely fucked up and the show seemingly romanticises it. The creators of the show even contextualised it as "what if Albert was in love with Batman - not Bruce Wayne - Batman" and Pearl's feelings for her Diamond are explicitly romantic. Even though Pink was her Master and forced Pearl to keep quiet over the most traumatic event in her life.
It doesn't help that while the show wants you to think Pearl is eventually able to move on from this and grow - Future shows she never did in the Volleyball episode. That's disturbing and it ruins Pearl as a character, someone who could overcome their past loss and pain, she never does and all attempts to do so ended up being futile.

Pearl's arc was supposed to be about moving on from Pink, and you think she would eventually - but she never does.
I'd be fine with Pearl being Pink's former slave, but in reality she never stopped being her slave. She was never freed from that final command and she never gets over Pink. A Pearl who "went rogue", fought for her own freedom, and even managed to shatter a Diamond vs a Pearl who was a good little slave with a hard-on for her master until the very end. Yeah Pink did good things to protect humanity but everything Pearl did for Earth means NOTHING because it was just orders from the person she was obsessed with.

I was one of those people who used to hate Jerry until I watched a compilation of his best moments. I realised the reason I hate him is because I am him. Jerry is kinda like all of us, he’s the most human and realistic out of the Smiths. His reactions to some of the situations he’s thrown in are similar to the reactions I think I’d have if I was in a similar situation.
Someone pointed out in a post that I started to notice is that all the Smiths in one way or another project their insecurities onto Jerry. Rick is jealous of the family Jerry has, he wants what Jerry has, he believes he should be the head of the family, that’s why he’s always challenging him. Summer is a typical teenage girl who wants more than anything to be cool (at least in earlier seasons) so she’ll always try and make Jerry out to be this sort of loser. This is kinda similar to Beth who also feels unaccomplished because of how early she had Summer, so she could only become a horse surgeon, yadayadayada. So she’ll also *kinda* take out her frustration on him, even though she does really love him in a toxic kinda way.
The fans and the smiths dunk on Jerry because they have some unresolved insecurity issues and they’ll just project them all onto him. At the end of the day however, at least he’s comfortable in his own skin. Even he’s constantly called a loser, he still takes pride in what he does and that’s pretty cool.
    Yk before he got flanderised.

Now I'm not saying morality isn't a spectrum, but have you seen the way those guys are written?
Their morality is edge, and their motivations are canned parodies of tragedy to justify the author's uber-"masculine" gun fetish.
You've seen one you've seen them all.

Flawless analysis, the shit Jerry gets is really weird and out of proportion, Honestly my biggest hope for season six is Rick running into people, or just Jerry, who actually can take responsibility for themselves and gets absolutely wreked

Like I can't help but root for Jerry. Dude fails constantly. But he's always trying. And I can't help but relate.
I'd rather be someone too stupid to ever give up. Than someone who's so smart they think trying is for idiots.

Rant warning, I didn't think I was going to type all this out but it's done and I'm putting it out there lol.
TL;DR: Jerry's flaws are his own, independent of Rick, but blames Rick for everything.
The thing that rubs me the wrong way about Jerry is how his flaws are deeply rooted in himself. The other characters in the family certainly have their flaws (some worse than Jerry), but these flaws really only started manifesting when Rick showed up at the start of the show. Most of the flaws of the other characters either stem from Rick or are brought out by Rick in some way (Beth's extreme daddy issues, Morty's hypocrisy and anger management issues, Summer's constant need for attention and approval, etc.); Jerry on the other hand has always been like this. That's just who he is. He's the kind of guy to complain about his situation and do nothing to fix it; he lets others trample over him constantly, can't stand up for himself, and constantly puts himself before others, even his own family. The problem isn't that he wants a loving family with a well-paying rewarding career, it's that he does nothing to try and make it happen, then acts like the victim. Jerry being overly sensitive isn't an issue in itself, it's the fact that it feels less like him opening up to people and more like him exploiting other's pity and empathy to shortcut his way out of sticky situations. I kinda view him as the opposite end of the "toxic masculinity spectrum": he's so spineless and self-centered but still expects respect. If Rick were to leave and never come back, and all the other characters just forgot he was there, most of their major flaws would vanish with Rick; Jerry on the other hand, his flaws are his own. Flaws he refuses to work on. He expects his kids to view him as a role model but forgets a good role model is supposed to be someone you should aspire to be, *not* someone who refuses to better himself. Ffs the other members of the family still look up to RIck even though they all know him to be a self-centered narcisstic asshole, and belittle Jerry. People walk all over Jerry and he just takes it. Taking Homer Simpson as an example, Homer knows his work exploits him, but he sucks it up and lets it happen as he needs the money and employment to take care of his family: Jerry takes the abuse because he is either unable to or doesn't know how to stand up for himself. He's weak of character (not saying he's a bad character, he's a fantastically written character, I'm talking about his person). Him being unapologetic and open about his feelings doesn't make him stronger or more transparent or honest with himself, it feels more like a tool he uses to get his way: like a child crying to get a toy, and not an adult accepting their frustrations and feelings and communicating them in order to work on and better themselves. The problem isn't that his goals and aspirations are simple, it's that he's a simple man who hasn't matured since high school and does nothing to work towards his goals. He's that roommate who has trouble paying rent because they can't hold a job for more than a week, he's that friend who keeps asking for weed money but never pays you back, he's the coworker who's always asking people to cover his shifts, he's that family member who feels personally attacked when you try to talk some sense into them about something stupid they did. He likes playing the victim because it's easy. He has the capacity to be a beacon of moral and emotional support for his family throughout Rick's bullshit, but instead chooses to have the mental maturity of a teenager and put *his* needs above those in his care (i.e., his kids). He's someone his family *can't* rely on, both physically and emotionally. He's a bad friend, a bad husband, and a bad father, yet somehow likes to portray himself as morally superior.

    • @Ven-zg3fj
      @Ven-zg3fj Před 2 lety +1

Agreed. the scenes that really define him for me are in the purge world episode where he's trying to talk to Summer while she's trying to help R&M escape the purge world. Instead of being seen trying to find a job, he's manipulating a conversation towards getting money from his own teenage daughter, which he's so focused on that he ignores his own son and FIL being in danger. The levels of narcisism, deceptiveness, and ignorance shown just in those scenes make him extremely hateable. The tiny moves of character growth from him within individual episodes that the video points out are, frankly, not enough. It's season five and he still doesn't have a job. He still blames Rick for his inability to meet his goals (to provide for his family and be a good father) that frankly should have been met long before Rick showed up. Rick is an asshole for saying he shouldn't try, but that doesn't make Jerry any less flawed. Meanwhile, Rick has gone through an entire arc of realizing his relationship with morty was abusive and actively changed it. Not saying Rick is a role model (definitely not) but the author’s got it backwards when she says Jerry learns from his mistakes and Rick doesn’t.
