Kitbashes make no sense

Star Trek is a major user of the kitbash, new ships made from bits and pieces of other ship models. Some of these ships are quite good, but others are hot garbage, today we are going to talk about some of the worst examples of the kitbash, and why they dont really make much sense from an in universe perspective.
So yeah, this video is about all bad kitbashes, and not just an excuse for me to trash talk the Yeager class for fifteen minutes... no no at all.

The Yeager might make sense if its not a deep waters warship, more of a coastguard ship that can't go far or fast from port. Like it takes a few weeks at warp 3 to get to a place and thats where it stays to shoot at any baddies that show up.
No idea why that particularly weird configuration would exist, unless the raider got accidentally enlarged, like that time the runabout and crew got shrunked and had to be unshrunked, and being on a wartime footing they slapped a severely structurally damaged intrepid's saucer on and internals in to make a basically functional ship. It wouldn't make a particularly great ship, but it would be a ship that allows a properly built ship to go out to fight far from home.
What happened to the hypothetical crew of the raider is a fun question, maybe they managed to shrink them with the transporter.

Love the Constellation "one of my favourites" and the single nacell Starfleet designs.

      Much prefer them to Yeager

I don't love the Constellation, but I definitely don't hate it either. It does make sense in universe though. It uses much of the top and bottom of the constitution refit hull components but has a lot more decks and internal space. My gut instinct is that there was an unseen Miranda class in the TOS Era but the the Constellation was created in or after the TMP era.

My favorite kitbash ship is the New Orleans class - love that ship, highlighters and all 😁

Good video! Love it the humor and snarky realistic view but doesn’t betray your love of ships and in canon universe explanations!

I think the Jaeger is unique in having one part clearly federation design and one - something else. The marauder to me always looked like a design from a different human faction. Throwing these together looks way more 'wrong' then creating something new from an assortment of parts in a related style - even if it's markers 😂

I love good kit bashes. In universe it makes sense as production is less resource intensive when you can produce many parts of the same types.

I like the Nebula class way more than the Galaxy class. The Yeager class looks like two ships jammed together, similar to the Nissan Juke car. One design element on the Constellation class I don't like are the nacelles, laying on their side. It just feels wrong.

That is so weird. I'm kind of neutral on both Nebula and Galaxy designs, but could at least understand why some people like the Galaxy.
Can you be specific about why you feel that opposite? It's such a rare opinion.

There is a thin line between ships having similar designs that establish that they belong to the same fleet and kitbashes. The Reliant and the Enterprise are good examples of ships belonging to the same fleet, but being significantly different. The Nebula class is more a kitbash of the Galaxy Class, but arguably done well. It's popularity speaks to it being well designed, even if constrained by episode budget. However, most kitbashes are either hastily thrown together or are fan-servicey. The Enterprise-G is a good example of the latter. I personally don't like it and feel it goes overboard on trying to please every Star Trek fan that ever lived by throwing in the kitchen sink and spare parts to measure. FASA was notorious for some seriously fugly kitbashes. The FASA TNG Officer's Manual is worth a look if you like a good laugh. Their Ambassador class is...something else.

Good examples. The Nebula is a beautiful sister ship to Galaxy Class. The Enterprise G was a weird design but I felt like it had originally been designed then the image was stretched like Stretch Armstrong until it was barely recognisable.

That G thing would have made a good background ship for Star Trek IV where the whale probe was tearing through the fleet.
      And that's about it.

A very relevant and funny presentation. There are some hideous creations but some really do make sense. I've said this many times but I love the families of Starships and when done right in production terms they make sense in the universe. Using existing components, spaceframes or even entire segments.

Kitbashing does dilute creativity, but sometimes it works (Nebula Class, Miranda) and many of your examples, they don't work.

The Yeager is the worst. I can forgive incorrect scaling of different components, but when thise components dont even match each others design aesthetics makes it a total fail

1: I LOVE Dominion Wars being listed here, although it's not popular, or has any mods for it. I submitted four Hex-Editted Gunheavy Ships from Starship Creator Warp 2 for that game.
2: My favourite is the USS Camelot, from Ptzue Colony, Oberth Saucer, Rear Hull and two Oberth Nacelles with Forward Borg Cutting Beam and Dorsal TMP Antares Nacelle.

Yes! My videos tend to fall into the gaming category on CZcams and it lets you out a featured game, because of that I like to just put some of the more obscure games from a given franchise, show them some love

Dominion Wars was a great game. I'm not confident with patching or modding so I haven't played it in almost 20 years. One of the elements of the game I fell in love with was the Cardassian Tonga Class ship. They looked great and held their own against better ships.

The reason for the "Shitty Kitbases" was actually explained as they were intended to look like shitty cut and shut jobs due to lack of working complete ships.

  • @thechet
    @thechet Před 3 měsíci

If a lot of components are replicated in sections, theoretically you could just increase the scale of the replicated part by 300% if you wanted a bigger ship without having to do much legwork in the design/testing. Perhaps the Yeager was a great experiment in replicator technology. The Curry could be argued as a "Extraterrestrial Marine Life Research Vessel" after the events of ST4 looking like a pontoon boat and all.
