Lost Method of Custom Leather Flintlock Jaw Pad Installation

Using a Leather Flintlock Jaw Pad allows you to preserve your flints, giving you more shots per flint. The leather has to be thick enough to allow the teeth in the top and bottom jaws of the cock to grip and hold the irregular surface of the flint. Many of us choose leather over lead because of the shock lead pads can cause to internal lock parts. Lead is a malleable material that will form to the shape of your flint but it wont spring and reform back like leather will. Most cut a notch into the leather pad to clear the top jaw screw, but have forgotten the true purpose of the hammer spike.

No dude it’s bc quartz isn’t nearly as effective as flint lol. Yes it will work but not as well. That’s why miquelet locks had features to better accommodate chert/quartz etc. bc on the frontier flint might be hard to find. But flint is and was always the first choice. That said thanks for the video I am trying to learn how to find & knapp flint from rocks in my area.
