  • Escaping Insane Snow Storm | Winter Vanlife Austria
In this winter van life travel vlog, we experience an insane snowstorm in Austria. Despite the heavy snowfall, we are able to tick off some bucket list experiences from a balloon ride over the Alps in Filzmoos to staying in a cozy cabin in the woods. We love our cabin life as we enjoyed the things that we don't usually get from living in a van. It was the perfect way to see out the snowstorm with movies, a fire, and an oven. We feel rested and recharged ready for more vanlife Europe content.

Yes, these stoves are very traditional in the Alpine region. Typical for farmhouses, but were surely widespread back in the days. They are called "Kachel-ofen", refering to the heat-storing tiles on the outside. Sometimes they even have wooden benches along the sides and a simple bed on top for resting in the cosy warmth of the oven.

Hi to you both . I am currently living in Ireland in County Kerry with my mother. I found your channel about a month ago. And I almost fell over with excitement My father is Austrian born and currently my sister is living in Austria not too far away from where you were she's not far from Innsbruck.
I recognised some of the mountains in the background I was skiing up near the mountains in the 80s and 90s..
You asked about the stove in the cabin they are known as kachelofen and well known in Austria long before my father was even born and that was in around the time before the Titanic was built. My mother put two kachelofen into our house the end of the 80s I am currently nice and snug and warm from the heat from the kachelofen .they are brilliant stoves. Your videos are epic I get so excited seeing the snow and countryside I recognise thank you for sharing and hope that you have a successful time. Yours sincerely here from Ireland thank you.

It's a rabbit - the footprints you asked for... and the fireplace is a so called "Kachelofen", a tiled stove. In mountainous regions, they are widely used by homeowners who can afford it, as they are quite expensive. But there's nothing better like a tiled stove when it's cold outside.

I've never seen so much joy over a snowstorm 😁. As a Canadian who's husband has had to snow blow 4 times in the last 3 days to get us in and out of our 100 meter driveway, I think you have earned the badge Alex! Well done! 👍 I can understand getting excited about it to be honest. It is quite beautiful. It just gets tiring when there is so much snow, and it keeps coming. It has been one of those winters in Manitoba. I would absolutely take a balloon ride, and that one looked fabulous. I still would love to see you guys do a tour of France, small towns, along the coast. Of course, it's a little selfish of me, because we are planning a short, one week driving trip primarily in the Brittany area for 2023, along with Ireland, Scotland, and some relax time in Croatia. CANNOT wait! I can't wait to travel again! Hoping to get some tips from you for France. Loved the VLOG! - Coreen

Excellent decision to stay in the cabin! Yes, you're right about us Canadians and hearing us chortle at your snow adventures. "Kachelofen" is a pan-European thing (Kachel=tile and ofen=stove) stretching from Scandinavia down to the Italian alps, and over into Hungary. Healthy heat, albeit dry - we used to put trays of water on the flatter surfaces (eg. on top). Recommend Slovenia and Slovakia for more great skiing.

Most tracks in the mountains through snow are foxes in Austria. You tend to find lots of tracks underneath skilifts, as people drop food there. Fox holes are generally near the pillars, and they walk their usual route scavenging food directly under the lift track, then fanning out through inhabited forest areas.

Wow! I envy you the balloon flight! I'd love to do that (have done it here in the UK). The footprints you asked about are rabbit prints. The 'fireplace' you fired up in the cabin is traditional in Austria, Germany, Scandinavia, maybe other countries too, that I don't know about. It's called "Kachelofen", (Kachel: tiles, Ofen: oven, stove). I've enjoyed your Austria vlogs tremendously - it's my home country, and I grew up not far from where you've been 'frolicking in the snow'.

I really can recommend city camping with the newborn in Vienna & surrounding locations! In Austria (as you might know), it's legal to "camp" everywhere, as long as you don't have anything standing outside and the car is ready to drive - because then it's parking by law, and you can "park for a rest until you drive on, because you're tired" for at least 24h everywhere you want - Just have no shoes or even litle things outside.
My GF and me were doing this, with little trips to the countryside inbetween, for 2 years, and it was amazing! You can sleep directly at the sidewalk of where you wanna go the next morning, or on a supermarket parking lot and have good breakfast, or along the Danube, where there are plenty wonderful spots around vienna (Greifenstein, Klosterneuburg, Kahlenberg, aso, aso), where you pack up and need 15min to the city center. I can also recommend you hundrets of extremely beautiful places within a 1 hour drive from vienna, where obvious camping isn't a problem at all and the police is looking away. There would be Rax, Erlauftal, Ötscher, Semmering, Helental, Höllental, Wachau, and many many more nr1 spots!
Very nice guys & videos, btw❤ Andreas from Austria✌

Although that is very unusual for the area, they got a month’s worth of snow overnight. I’d love to do the hot air ballon but I’m less sure about that crazy glass bridge. My favourite movie binge is James Bond. I’d love to see you find the sun, once again though that’s from a winter bound Canadian who is traveling vicariously through you! Enjoyed your video immensely mainly because I’ve flown in a hot air balloon many years ago and found it most exhilarating especially when you fly over people and frighten the living daylights out of them when the burner fires up overhead and, the only problem I have at the moment is when Alex films you walking away from the camera, I think you should be entered for “ rear of the year” and I’m sure in my honest opinion you would win it hands down, now I’ve embarrassed myself completely 🤭🤠 just carry on giving us so much fabulous content it is the first subscription I go for each time 👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A movie you should both check out, since you're in the Alps, is The Alpinist, should be on Netflix.

Really enjoy following your travels. I've lived in a few cold places, including Montana USA, and I can say you've definitely now qualified for surviving a proper snow storm :-) I know you asked the Canadians, but I thought northern Montana was close enough to Canada to chime in 😊

Got to say as a Cannuck living in the UK don't miss the snow. Digging out the driveto go to work then digging out the drive to get back home isn't as much fun as people on holiday think.

I loved your vlog 🥰. It´s so cool. You've ridden in the balloon of Austria's most famos beer - Puntigamer 🍺🍻. I have been working for Puntigamer for 31 years. The hair burning thing with the champagne is a ceremony. This is from the time of the first balloonists. They were raised to the nobility. So you both must be Lady and Lord now 😁.

The key when you have to shovel is to park as close to the street as possible so you won't have to shovel the whole driveway.

That heater system is a typical Austrian way of heating. Very effective. It reminds me of the first time I visited Austria looking at cuckoo clock houses and then staying in a cuckoo hotel. That stove did the whole hotel!

  • @aksileb
    @aksileb Před 2 lety +6

The masonry heater was a traditional way of heating houses back in the day, (all over the colder parts of Europe, I guess, you can find them in castles), people would also cook on it in the cottages (the Uk would have a range cooker, we would have a tiled stove) I’m sure they still have them in some of the big old houses in the UK as well. People have started using them more again, at least in the central European region because they look good and are very efficient.

I can well remember the old black cast iron Edwardian range in the kitchen, kept the whole house above freezing, came home from school one day to be greeted by a shiny bright red Aga, that actually kept the house at a reasonable temperature. Great bread and roasties/Yorkshires from it.

Watching Emma stomp out into 3 foot of snow armed with a can of de-icer was a bit like seeing Steve McQueen approaching the Towering Inferno with a water pistol. 🤣🤣.
(Been in a hot air balloon, fab scenery but after a while I got a tad bored having to keep still.) If you haven't decided where to go, try the Italian lakes. I would love to see the villages around Lake Garda at this time of year. Nice feel-good vlog - anything that puts a smile on my face for 20 minutes is most welcome.

  • @littlemisssunshine5331

I have done it twice, first time in the desert of UAE which was beautiful and we also ended up landing on our side and being dragged, was so fun (sounds scary but it does happen alot!) The second was in India and was so serine and lovely and lots of children ran and followed us to were we landed and it was a great welcome back to earth. I would LOVE to do it over the alps, it looks utterly breathtaking!!!

Have u been over here in Canada yet? Having travelled much of it and being a proud 8th generation Canadian, I can only say it's pretty hard to beat for outstanding natural beauty. It is definitely beauty overload. We are second only to Russia in size so it is a huge undertaking to travel it-- from the pink beaches of Anne of Green Gables Prince Edward Island to Niagara Falls to the Banff National Park to the Rocky Mountains and the far far north, you will indeed have your socks blown off- and you will see amazing Northern Lights all year round.... Ontario alone, where I live, has 250,000 charted lakes aside from the Great Lakes and Hudson's and James Bay. We also have the world's longest skating rink here in Ottawa. I highly recommend it but you'll need to plan for quite a lengthy stay : ).
