I was in my 20s back in the 1990s, and loved RATM. Given everything that has happened between then and now, it seems we didn't rage hard enough, or it was naive to think we could change anything. By most measures I think we are worse off now than we were back then.
I'm about the same age. "...it was naive to think we could change anything" Any discussion of RATM is going to involve the word "naive". When I was 20 years old, I bought into the WHOLE thing. RATM, Jello Biafra & Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion...I read Mother Jones, listened to NPR & thought conservatives & Republicans were some combination of evil & stupid. 20-Year-Old-Me didn't know shit. The "message" that RATM peddles is profoundly naive. The entire ideology is naive AT BEST, but usually it's ignorant, childish, selfish, whiny nonsense based on resentment, revenge, and a corrupt desire for bullying-power. "Che Guevara T-Shirt"-style activism is one of the stupidest things a person could buy into. It's fucking retarded.
Well, they didn't just do one album as teens. They put out four studio albums between 1992-2000. Ad hearing that you should "just go along with the machine" is such a bummer statement. The idea of not even trying to make thing better, uff.
the band members formed a new band, Audio Slave, without Zach, but with the addition of Chris Cornell on vocals. Yet another music rabbit hole for you to explore
The biggest of their rage inside the machine is for a movie Godzilla in a song "No Shelter", where they stated "Godzilla, pure mo-fo filla, gets your eyes off the real killa". It's real good to be educated/reminded about the machine by their songs, and they had a lot of gems.
They were recently inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! Only one member showed up, the others feeling it would make them "part of the machine". The one who did, though. wanted to be there to represent their fans and ideals and give inspiration!
They did get back together a couple years ago. We live in Florida and my son went to Chicago to see them. I’m 69 years old and I love Rage Against the Machine! I especially like Tom Morello and what he stands for. He’s also an excellent guitar player. His mother was an activist especially with the teachers unions and he learned about politics and is also an activist. I love that someone in music is standing up against tyranny.
The Christmas thing that you discussed is kind of funny. They did a live performance where they were asked to refrain from the use of profanity in Killing in the Name. They didn't swear at the beginning then dropped the F bombs when the beat dropped. Which I mean the lyrics are literally 'F*** you, I won't do what you tell me.' So I am not sure what they expected.
What are you talking about? They were in their 20s when they formed RATM. And the "fear" that were police officers in the klan? They are! Cops getting outed for being in the klan or some other white supremacist/ facist group isn't a rare occurrence. Rich white girl from another country, i get that police brutality against minorities in the US isn't something that is on your radar. I'd be surprised if it was. That line, "now you do what they told you," is a reference to a saying minorities in the US all understand. When it comes to dealing with the police, your options are "comply or die." It doesn't matter if your civil rights are being stomped on, or if you're innocent, or if you're unarmed; if you don't comply then you can wind up being beaten or shot to death. That's not hyperbole, that's a daily occurrence that happens all the time here.
Rage Against The Machine are legends. Rage itself doesn't have any tragedy, but basically the ENTIRE band, aside from the frontman, went on to become Audioslave, with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as the frontman. Chris Cornell was a legend himself, but HE committed suicide 2017. Tom Morello is a guitar god. Which I think you picked up on. He's capable of making guitars make sounds that guitars just don't normally make. Rage doesn't care about the "machine" of the music industry. The Machine in question that they're raging against is the government, the military-industrial complex, capitalism, police corruption, racism, abuse of Native Americans, etc. They've stormed and shut down the New York Stock Exchange. This song is about police forces and military forces secretly being the same racists burning crosses (to terrorize black people) as the KKK. 'Renegades Of Funk' (their best song) is about celebrating civil rights leaders and revolutionaries, and urging everyday people to become revolutionaries. "Bulls On Parade" criticizes the waste of money on the military, instead of actually helping the hungry, the homeless, people who don't even have shoes....instead of supporting libraries and education. And how they try and get away with suppressing books not by burning them (because that would be too obvious), but instead by just banning them. etc etc etc They're one of the most highly respected bands EVER. Like everyone else is putting on a show, or feeding their egos, or trying to make money, but Rage is there to FIGHT. They mean business. They're dead serious. They're calling out the ills of the world and trying to lead people to fight alongside them to make a better world. And people know it. Like they might not be people's favorite band, but everyone respects their dedication, and intent, and how much they absolutely mean it. And they're good enough that pretty much everyone likes them, even if they're not everyone's favorite music. It's like Captain America. He might not be your favorite superhero, but EVERYONE respects the hell out of him. Even supervillains who hate him hold him in extremely high respect. 🤷♂
Renegades of Funk was a cover of a song by Afrika Bambaataa from 1983, I believe that whole album, Renegades, was all covers. Maybe their best cover, although my personal favorite is The Ghost of Tom Joad, a Springsteen cover.
haha, the "sounds that guitars don't normally make" is achieved by using a digitech whammy peddle dude amongst other effects. your telling me that compared to Gilmore, Vai, Malmsteen, Satch and like 20 others this sad little communist is in their league? nah, no way. Edward van Halen is a Guitar God as is Randy Rhoads etc... this guy is a second rate hack comparatively. he has written some catchy tunes admittedly his best work was with a real singer in Cornell but even the Sound garden lead guitarist is better... smh

"Pop" doesn't come into my mind when I listen to this song. They are talking about things that a lot of popular artists wouldn't dare touch in their music for fear of losing listeners. They were very popular, yes, but maybe there are different definitions of the word "pop". The standout member to me is the guitarist Tom Morello. Very unique technique. He went on to join Chris Cornell to form the very successful "supergroup" Audioslave". That was until the untimely death of Cornell. So sad.
