F35 Lightning from 617 Sqn to the skies above Cosford on Sunday 9th June 2024
đ„The RAF Cosford Air Show will be the first opportunity to see the aircraftâs brand new role demonstration at a UK Air Show - VÄda a technologie
Man, that high angle of attack was impressive.
Great video. Thanks. In the "looks" department, I am more F-16 or FA-18 sort of guy, but the pilots love the F-35 so that what counts.
Bravo sir ! đđ Thank you !
Thank you too!
We had one of these do a demo display at Brize recently they are incredible machines nice footage
I was based at Brize during my RAF service in the mid 80s, lived in one of the accommodation blocks up near the NAAFI , fairly close to the airfield and often experienced close up views of aircraft coming in of all types, also had great air shows, probably still do.
You make my heart sing again! Thank youâ€ïž
Excellent!! đ
Great! Thank you.
You are welcome!
Excellent video Elwyn.Thanks
Many thanks đ
I was at RAF Cosford for this, words can't describe how loud this thing is when in afterburner and especially hover mode. Absolutely ridiculous. Only thing that came close was a Vulcan bomber on full power.
Quality. Thank u!
You're welcome! đ
Fantastic, that high alpha pass was great. Love to see the flight control computers moving the control surfaces in such an aggressive manner. Great footage đ
At times it looked like it was paddling through the sky
Great vid Elwyn. I was there. It was fantastic when it finished its hover and throttled up and set off 1000 car alarms behind me!
Iâve never seen the B or C in person but the A still shocks me how loud it is. F15 flew after last years airshow I was at and it sounded half as loud
love that afterburner glow
3:13 look at that dance! Epic shot đ„
Very impressive!
Great video,Elwyn,always enjoy your stuff,cheers from Wichita,Kansas.
Another gem!
Elwyn fantastic video, what a great low altitude flight. Thank you Sir. Jeff in LA USA
Many thanks Jeff đ
Very cool
Hi Elwyn, You have done it again thank you for a great video looking đ forward to the next one. You take care of yourself and stay safe.đ«đ«âïžâïžđđ
Many thanks đ
Wow who could not love that?
Fantastic videoâŠ. We were there for the day and this demo was exhilarating and loud as F đ€Ł mega!!! đŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó ż
It was a cool display, shame the weather wasn't better
Shame a helicopter was starting up for the whole duration of the Hurricane flight đ€Ź one of its attractions- the Merlin Engine sounds - drowned out đ
Those are so stealthy I could only hear the announcer and a jet engine...đ
Another cracking video Elwyn. Cheers buddy
Excellent! đ€đđ€
Rock on!
Dam it I would have gone to this.
I took my lad to the museum there which is brilliant, and not too far
I've stopped watching other YTers' vids - yours are the best
Many thanks đ
3:12 it can even swim!
Lol, itâs like itâs doing moonwalking like Michael Jackson or airborne walking đđđ
Last month we had a couple of days where a lot of military hardware flew over where I lived, on the way back home to the US after an exercise in Europe. The F-35s where unmistakable. As where the Chinooks
I was also watching the show but unfortunately i had to go before the f35 come out so thanks for uploading my personal favourite was the typhoon its such a cool jet also the chinook was wicked as well as it come right over our headsđ
Glad you enjoyed it đ just a shame no Sun
@@ElwynR true some sun would have been good
First demo at Cosford.
Yes đ
Wow. How do they do that. Very clever. Thanks for posting
Haha look at those tailplanes going, looks like its literally paddling through the air!
Very nice Elwyn, it was something else to see first hand, i just wish my hands were steadier while I was filming it, sign me up for lessons when you start them lolđ
ATB Andy
đ€Ł I was struggling a bit, having a bit of trouble with my shoulder đ€š
@@ElwynR my arms are still aching now from waving my 300 f2.8 around with the video on top đ but enjoyed every minute of it đđđŹđ§âïžđșđČ
that is so sick...... thumps up from DK
Role Demo? Huh?? Anyway, on the slow pass the vertical stabilizers make it look like itâs walking. Good stuff.
iv have seen this at farnborough airshow its not the first
Any pilot work out whatâs going on with the elevators at 3:20? Stall control?
It's a good question. I've net seen anything quite like that before.
Roll control/stability.
the F35 has fly by wire. That means there are computers between the flight stick and the wing control surfaces.
So, pilot:
Hold this steady high angle of attack. That makes the flight computers work harder.
wind and weather: lots of small gusts of wind blowing over the airframe. And you now trying to balance the fighter on rear engine thrust, but you not flying very fast, are you? So, the control surfaces have to work very hard at what amounts to flying at stall speed.
Result?
Computer works like mad to fly the fighter in perfect steady and stability. Try looking at the rest of the aircraft and not the rear control surfaces.
The result is 100% rock steady flying, but to do that the computers are fighting tiny gusts of wind that would affect how stable the fighter is. Toss in your very nose high, then it becomes a balancing act for the flight computers.
So, the control surfaces are trying to do what the pilot is asking - please fly rock steady at a high angle of attack, balance most of the weight on the rear of the fighter.
The pilot could NEVER react that fast, but computer controlled flight surfaces can - so computers move the wing surfaces like crazy to provide a perfect stable platform.
If there was no gusting wind, then the flight control computers would not have to work so hard to keep the fighter perfect stable.
So, this is the result of computers + fly by wire. They are working hard in that shot to keep the fighter balanced VERY high nose up. It not unlike you trying to balance a pencil on the end of your finger - you have to make lots of small and very fast movements.
Same thing occurs in a hover - the pilot can even let go of the flight stick, and the fighter will hover EXACTLY at that current spot and location. However, if there is any gusting wind, you see the flight control surfaces and even the rear thrust control nozzle move around like crazy trying to produce a rock steady and solid hover - and one over the exact spot you were hovering over from the ground's point of view.
Look VERY close at the hover video - 6:06, pay attention VERY close to HOW VERY FAST the rear nozzle is moving back and forth to create that stable hover - it near "jiggles" back and forth - and again the result of computer fly by wire.
Its all about the Pilot đ!!! That awesome fighter jet would be only a hunk of lifeless metal without the one at the controls. But yes ! that is one special amazing plane ! Thank you for posting đâ
Just imagine old type of scramble. Eh hold on hold on I'm just logging in that's even if it let's you lol. Great stuff as normal Elwyn R. â€
I understand why the F35 is absolutely dominant on a battlefield with its capabilties, but damn, does the Typhon look more fun to fly and watch it doing so....
Angle of attack was NUTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course what did I do?
Why I cranked the volume up for my headphones, just so I could get the FULL experience.
BTW is that the doorbell ringing?
Thatâs an impressive display. Saw our variant here in Oz do a display recently. The transition to VTOL is technically impressive. Doing those high speed passes without a/b is testament to the big donk!!
How loud is it compared to a hovering Harrier? I remember from my airshow days how that, the F-101 and the Vulcan bombers were some of the loudest planes at the shows.
Thai is louder
Fantastic video I still think harrier looked the best in the hover
I agree đ should cach the harrier later this year đ€
@ElwynR yeah I carnt wait to see it at riat agree
At least the Harrier could âTake a bow!â, Iâve not seen the F35 do that yet.
Not seeing anything it hasnât demoed before in the uk so. Was the role part missed ?
B version
I think you'll find that this role demo is the most the RAF have demonstrated in the UK to date! Yes they have demonstrated the hover and done a couple of flypass before but not as much as this
The f-35 has the world's most powerful single-engine fighter the engine produces about 45,000 lb of thrust it would be great if Lockheed made a twin-engine fighter jet using the same engines đ
It would! A new F22 đ
@@ElwynRa brand new SR-71.
â@@ElwynRyeah good idea!
â@@mknewlan67well the new SR72 is supposed be is a mach 10 aircraft I don't think those would work.. but if they used two it might go mach 3+ then use ram and scam jet for the rest of the way up to mach 10đ
I know this. I put one in my 1978 Toyota.
Front intake on F35b: Good and solid at flying speeds.
Convertible top on random convertible: I CAN'T HANDLE THIS SLIGHT SUMMER BREEZE CAPTAIN!
problem has always worried me -------like driving down the motorway with your hood up !!
Give me a Harrier any day!
Me too đ
what % of its fuel does it take for a hover takeoff?
Still think they should have taken a mix of A and B models. The B has less range, lower g limit and carries fewer weapons.
My understanding is they haven't ruled out the A model in future
I thought they had orders for A version too.
Should convert carriers to emals and switch out to C versions
Is that Cosford airshow cuz if it is I been there
Yep đ
amazing jet....I flown my own F-35 jet in heavy storm...a small foam one...the Lightning is a technic wonder
I dont care what anyone says about the 35 i absolutely love them. Look good, big payload, vtol, stealth and really quite fast
It is always scary to watch this plane hover.
Still prefer the AVB displayâŠ
Anybody else ever wondered how stealthy a fighter jet can be when it leaves huge visible vortices every time it turns? Ha haaa. Anyther great video elwyn, many thanks.
Can those be seen 80 miles away?
Great video thanks đđ» Apart from the hover the F35B really does appear stodgy in terms of agility. Constant bursts of burner just to turn. Appreciate itâs not a dog fighter but F35A puts up a much more energetic performance. Add to that itâs lower fuel fraction and bomb load and you kinda wonder why we didnât get some Cs. Oh well!
I believe that this display is a very toned down display after Beo Wolf đș display last year at Huntington beach California
@@ElwynR ah ok, Iâll take a look at that. Yes it has done a more âactiveâ display before. Your footage is fantastic as always.
VTOL, Gtalin gun, nukes, and a few lock on missiles right?
no VTOL
The B while capable of vertical takeoff is STOVL and won't be armed with nukes.
Quite extraordinary! Still prefer the 'jump jet' however. UK
A nod to the BAe Harrier. The first.
"A nod to the BAe Harrier."(sic)
BAe didn't get involved until long after the GR.1 had achieved IOC.
Nice, but still prefer the harrier. Just something about the looks on that bird.
Yes me too! Hopefully get to see the Harrier next month đ
@@ElwynR Is there a Harrier at an air show somewhere? Are you going to the US to see one of the few USMC squadrons before they retire them?
@@RCAvhstapeare the Spanish ones still in service?
Yes the Spanish will display their Harrier next month and I hope to be heading to the USA September
@@ElwynR I read that the last scheduled USMC Harrier appearance at an airshow was about a month ago, but if you go to Havelock, NC you can probably still see them flying the pattern for another year or two.
Cheer~~~a person who takes part in a public protest meeting or march.đ
About time they gave people ear radios so they can listen to the commentary and not have to listen to someone prattling on loudspeakers, you are there to hear the noise of the planes not useless information that no one really cares about. With ear pieces you have the choice of listening to the commentary or just watch and listen to the planes with out wearing your ear piece.
In Ben Dunnell - Cosford has one of the best airshow commentators in the business (he can be heard at Duxford, RIAT Fairford etc, he did the later Waddington shows too). If you had 'earpieces' - you'd still be listening to the same commentary, as on the loudspeakers!
â@@pburr1973 if you chose to...
A méditer..
18 $M more than F16 but with loads more capabilityâs
@@robertpatrick3350 et la maintenance par rapport au F-16?.....
remember when we made the first vtol then sold it to usa then never built anything again and now we buy this stuff from america. well done uk.
Yes thanks to the Tories they have ripped Great off Britain đ€š
Itâs a harrier situation
Uk builds and designed 20% of the F-35B.
Without the technical and financial assistance provided by the US taxpayer via the MWDP, the Pegasus, Kestrel and Harrier never would have made it past the drafting table.
@@fakkattak4963yes but it seems Lightning does in fact strike twice
A bit of a clickbait. It didn't hover that low. Otherwise very impressive aircraft and show. Didn't regret watching.
Owes so much to the Hawker Siddeley Harrier.
The mistakes that were made with the Harrier - primarily the hot gas ingesting compressor stall generating failures of the Pegasus - weren't repeated with the F-35B
Serious skills đź
Not a bad video... but why the photoshopped click bait thumbnail... downvote and "dont recommend" for that reason.
Thanks for your input đ
Great video, many thanks - best to just ignore the âhatersâ.
I REALLY hate how disappointing the brits are with their airshows
Sorry , but this aircraft doesn't do it for me . I just don't like the look of it .................Typhoon , Rafale d Gripen , F 16 , F 18 and F 15 yes ......................F 35 sorry .
Battle penguin đ§
Bloody ell⊠didnât even go upside down during the first 2 minutes⊠what a BORING display! No way near as good as they were 20 odd years ago, a shame! Good filming tho!
Not a display its a demo đđ
@@ElwynR Ah I understand! đđ
Harrier was better.
Junk
I must say, a very ugly aircraft.
Its for war not beauty contests.
How many homeless people could be housed for the cost of 2 of these
How boring watching aircraft do the same thing just in variations. Would prefer to see cockpit footage. Itâs time pilots and authorities got onboard with this.
the F35B the we have bought is the Worst of them All. the F35A, and C variants are miles ahead of the Silly B model?
that Huge Door, and folding Doors, are so heavy, and take up so much space, the aircraft has lost, everything that made it worth having
the US Marines Corps, said no thanks, when they tried it, and it was built for them, as a AV8B replacement, and they turned it down
"the US Marines Corps, said no thanks, when they tried it, and it was built for them, as a AV8B replacement, and they turned it down"(sic)
Complete BS, pogue.
Barcalounger cabal experts like you generate a lot of laughs in the ready rooms of all ten Marine Corps F-35B squadrons around the world.
It's a Lemon
Rafale turns better..
Lots of shit to go wrong !
