Tattoos Ideas So Horrid We Refused To Do Them | Tattoo Artists React

- Not every tattoo idea is a winner. Frankly, some of them are downright repugnant. We asked our panel of artists what types of tattoos they’ve had to refuse in the past. Some clients have wild ideas, some have concepts that no tattooer could ever possibly bring to life and come clients have ideas that are beyond disgusting.
At this rate, we’re pumping out seasons of Tattoo Artists React faster than those “Now This Is What I Call Music'' psychopaths. This time around, we’ve brought back some of your favorite characters to share their ridiculous stories, per your requests. We also had the chance to sit down with some folks for the very first time. This season you’ll watch us tackle the big questions, tell some silly tales and react to this thing the kids seem to love called TikTok.
Thanks for watching!

A question for all you tattooers out there. What’s the worst idea a client has ever approached you with?
Eyes on the hip bones. Cool... until she's nude. 😱 Do I need to give a more clear mental image? I don't think you want that. Let's just say... she's a rather lippy one. And that's TOTALLY fine! But just think... What creature/character comes to mind?
Okay. It's Zoidberg.
I'm sorry.
A mermaid with EKG lines (she supplied 2 of them for me to combine) that went through the body and turned in to specific song notations on the tail and the hair of the mermaid had to be colored and realistic just like the clients while the rest of the mermaid she wanted it in black and gray. The mermaids hands where supposed to turn in to bonsai branches and then turn in to an obscure symbol that turned in to her, her husbans and her kids initials. OH and she wanted it to be super tiny.

But if you do find an artist who can, and is willing to execute, their mood shouldn't matter TOO much. After all you're paying for their art, not their approval.

Don't worry, most tattoo artists I've come across aren't entitled assholes like these people.
I love that most tattoo artists have enough integrity to not tattoo hateful messages. I'm sure they get offered a lot of money to do them sometimes!
Super late comment is super late ... (my buddies and I are playing cards and this vid came up on "random background noise youtube" and we got "arguing"... And since yours seems to be the most recent comment about it, we're putting this here...
so many people are praising the artists for having integrity to say no to racist tattoos as it goes against their morals / beliefs / whatever.... but is it really any different than that bakery that refused to make an LGBTQ+ cake and everyone was freaking out because they said no?
IMO, it's the same thing, my one buddy is going on about "racist bad, lgbtq+ good"... I can't get him to get past the concept that that's not the point. "customer X walks into your business and asks for something you disagree with be created for them. You decline the service / sale due to it conflicting with your personal views." Am I talking about the tattoo shop or the bakery?
(not really expecting a reply, lol.... dude just said I wouldn't "dare compare the racist with lgbtq+"... he still doesn't get the point)
@@jasonmoore710 the thing is, the lgtb couple at the cake shop wasn’t hurting anyone, it’s a cake dude, it wasn’t promoting genocide or hate. If someone wants a swastika tattooed on them, that’s hate, that’s real. Millions of people died and it’s such a bad message. Same with racism or whatever other hate. It’s a different thing entirely. My comment is not the most eloquent way of saying this but I wanted to reply anyway. It’s good to ask questions and debate.
@@salmahahmed4672 While I do see your point, I also disagree with it.... mainly because I know a lot of "racist" people (full on swastika on the neck tattoos kind of racist), and in all honest, they DON'T "hate" not white folks... they hate the double standard society has about the topic, and I kinda agree with them. NAACP is a thing... is there a whites only college fund? Affirmative action was / is a thing... what would happen if a company posted job ads for "white men only"? When is white history month? When is the cis pride month?
@@jasonmoore710 once again because of history, you ask why isn’t there ‘white men only’ ads for jobs. There WAS, for a long time. all these things you’re mentioning were real. Jews and dogs not allowed posts on hotels. I’m South African and people of colour only got rights in 94. My mother was 18 when she got human rights. This stuff was REAL not too long ago. so there needs to be equitable treatment instead of strictly equal treatment.
Also the swastika tattoo thing is so unnecessary. This is my purely personal opinion but it’s just so dumb.

Go on one of those mean tattoo shows
My first 3 tattoos (2 symbols and a half sleeve) were done by an artist who didn’t even specialize in the particular style I was asking for, yet he had this confidence in his own abilities and I was convinced he could perform the task. He drew up the sketches and I was sold, he was able to reimagine a concept, and paid special attention to placement, body flow, organization, and artistic design. It was to the point that the second half of my half sleeve, I gave him the ability to do something he did have a connection to, and it makes me love it that much more.
My point in sharing this is don’t run away from an opportunity. It is just that.

@@niameyers6686 well him getting a big ass tattoo and her getting one you could barely see is an issue for most people you‘d think, which is exactly why i said before that they should‘ve discussed this matters beforehand.
When I got my tat, the idea I'd sketched was a bit too intricate for the size, so the artist asked if he could redraw it. His design/drawing was better. I also wanted it in color. He hesitated and suggested just do shading. If I still wanted color after the shading, he'd do color. He was right. So I have a shaded greyscale image.

@@HenritheHorse There's a difference between the religious swastika which faces left vs the racist version which faces right.
Edit: I figured people would get where I was going with this but I was wrong to use a very simplified explanation. To clarify there is also a big obvious position difference between the Nazi Swastika and religious one, in Hinduism the Swastika does face right but is horizontal.
My whole point was that you can differentiate between them, a religious swastika is very different from a Nazi one.

The guy who said you need to find someone you trust, that's the best advice. My favourite tattoos are the ones where I gave the tattooist a super basic idea, and just said do your thing. Letting someone have full freedom with their creative ability I've always found results in far better designs than I ever had in my own mind.
I used to work as a receptionist at a tattoo shop, and the best tattoos I saw there were ones where the artist was given a large amount of creative license. Like, someone gives a few elements that they want in the piece and a general style and let the artist come up with the design.
@@terminaldeity Yeah I got my hand done recently, and I gave the artist 2 pieces of info. I wanted a lotus, and I wanted it to be feminine. The result I got was 100x better than any of the images I had came up with in my head. I think people forget that artists have their own styles, and letting them have their artistic freedom allows them to really give you the most out of their artistic ability.
Same with me! I have one artist who I trust religiously (I'm going to be heartbroken when he retires) and I always give him an idea, and he goes with it. I've come to him with direct images, but he loves to take what I suggest and run with it. And I always let him lol
I do the same with streetfood...if u specify them more it's gonna get ruined..so just tell them make it in ur best way... It's always the best
I wish I had that kind of trust. I'm sure they look great, and it must be the most fun for the artist, too. I just can't imagine having something permanently on my body without knowing what it'd look like (at least roughly) first. I only want 2 tattoos so far, and they're both very simple, meaningful designs. Nothing big or intricate. So I don't assume the artist could really "do their thing" much with that, anyways. Another comment here talks about it in relation to ordering food, they know what's good so don't ask for some big alterations. But I feel like it's different from something you'll have for the rest of your life. Everyone's different, I guess. I'm glad you like your tats, that's what matters :)

I am really grateful for having an excellent tattoo artist who has done my tattoos.
I dated a tattoo artist in college. One guy, on a lot of drugs came in demanding he tattoo an 88 on his back. So, the guy refused multiple times and then the idiot passed out in the lobby. So, 3 other tattoo artists used a sharpie permanent marker and made it look like they had tatooed his face with "I am a Racist Asshole!" Across his forehead before calling the police on him for being disorderly, trying to break the front door and then passing out.
Not sure how he felt when he woke up in jail but we were pretty sure his cellmates in NO would not care for his "announcement."
Now my worst fear if I end up getting a tattoo will be the tattoo artist thinking my ideas are lame 😔
This is why you need to have a good, open conversation with the Artist before making any final plans.
As some of them said in the video, you need to trust your Artist and make sure that they are invested in it and not dreading doing.
Once you find someone who sees the vision of your ideas then you will get something amazing

@@Tikachu I mean this was specifically about what you refuse to do, not your style. But she clearly says she mostly does flowers
@@broadwaybutterfly310 that was the other girl. the one that the original commenter is talking about didnt specify what tattoos she does
This is why you do research on the artists. You should be able to look into their portfolio(Instagram, picture on their website etc.). Not all artists do portraits, animals and such. If you look at their portfolio you can see what they mostly do and in what style. You can't ask from a tattoo artist to do Realism when their style is Japanese(for example). You can't ask them to paint a realistic dog when they only do abstract pieces.
I mean just like regular artists have their own art styles, so do tattoo artists. And she’s putting something permanent on someone so if she isn’t strong with faces, people, or animals it’s better that she know her strengths and not do a tattoo that’s going to end up looking like shit.
The editing 😂😂😂 Chefs kiss
How could they be so badass and lovely at the same time? I mean their personality is just so amazing!! ✨

Absolutely no one:
My mind: _They look like the cops from gravity falls_
They radiate that energy
😂😂😂
Lmaoooo I kinda feel bad but ur righr
Hahahaha nop, I did not but you're amazing
Lmao omg, YES!! 🤣 Underrated comment, right here.
There isn't yet, but there will probably be comments like "If i'm paying the artist should go with my idea, etc etc".
Those people are the ones that aren't familiar with the concept of RESEARCH. Look up the artist's work beforehand, people. If they're refusing your idea you surely didn't do it and should have gone to a different artist from the start.
Lmao literally. I'm not gunna go to the girl who specializes in realistic flowers for an anime tattoo.
That’s just it though homie. These artists should have the honestly and pride to say they can’t do that style of work. Not every shop has their work and names just plastered everywhere. So if someone comes in to one of the only 3 tattoo places around, he doesn’t know if these guys can do what he wants. So instead of calling it stupid or dumb, just say, that’s not my style. Or I can’t do that.
Honestly goes a long way
@@nextlevelbjj3083 But that's the problem. You should NEVER go to a professional without research.
The person that goes into a random tattoo place to get tattooed (regardless of the reputation) without researching first is wrong by definition.
It's a permanent mark on your body, you should take your time to look at the person's work before you let them do it to you.
If you don't have Instagram or something, you can always go there and personally ask to see their portfolio before asking them to tattoo you.
@@nextlevelbjj3083 You can still see their work, even if their names aren’t plastered everywhere. I haven’t met an artist that doesn’t have their work online, but if someone doesn’t then you can go into the shop and ask to see it personally. Its truly not that hard.
Also I feel like people forget that the artist is associated with the tattoos they do. If they don’t want to be associated with a certain idea why would they do it
As a kid a million years ago, my best friend and I got my water color pencils and a jug of water and a card table and set up a temporary tattoo stand in her neighborhood.
Within an hour we had kids walking from streets away for them. BUT also within a short time, a kid I didn't know came over and asked for a swastika on his forehead.
I was freaked out.
I said no, no way am I doing that, and I was only nine.
So your friend is right, first dude, I hope that one's a no brainer!
Btw...I still can't tell if he really wanted that, or just wanted adults to get rid of our stand. Because he argued huffed and hawed, then disappeared, and fifteen minutes later was trying to set up his own tattoo stand with markers three houses down.
Didn't matter, we continued to make a killing anyway and went to Carvel for ice cream after.
*Kids, don't do this. In retrospect, even art supplies labeled nontoxic really shouldn't be put on the skin deliberately like that!
I didn't know that at nine of course.
the goat and angel battle on the ribs sounds so cool!
My son had his first open heart surgery when he was 15 days old. In an effort to feel some of the pain he must have endured I decided to get a tattoo of a heart with stitches going through it. I wanted the heart to look real, like with all 4 chambers and valves and what not... My tattoo artist said no because it would look morbid and wouldn’t be a good tribute to my son. We settled on my son’s name, heart shape and he allowed stitches on the heart. Definitely the better decision ❤️
I think ur idea would have been amazing if you found someone with the same Vision
You know what? You are so right!
My son had open heart surgery when he was 2. That heart tattoo is a good idea 🤔
I honestly don't think it was a bad idea. human anatomy isn't morbid and it means something to you, so why not. Sure, its super complicated to get all the anatomy right, but it would've been pretty cool.
Yeah, I’m thinking he didn’t understand my vision or maybe just couldn’t see it. I’m still happy with the end result but it would have been nice to see it come together with my original idea also.
Inked editing is just getting better. These videos were great just as information about the tattoo industry but the editing just makes it so much better
The editing gets a lot of credit but it needs even more credit, it’s so fun.
@@heysaucemikehere1804 Couldn't have said it better. Saw a ton of comments praising it but still felt like it needed more. They really could just make these videos of artists talking and they'd still be amazing videos.
2:15 Can we just take a moment to appreciate how perfectly her dress's neckline lines up with her tattoo? 😍
The thing with the animals going away... and the turtle at the end, I laughed so much. More than I should hahaha.
"LBGT" so close. im glad he doesnt do anti LGBT tattoos tho.
yeah, i couldn’t imagine getting a tattoo solely to show my hate for the way people were born
But can you imagine getting a tattoo that says "LBGT pride"?
No regerts.
@@LuckySketches I absolutely love any reference to the classic no regerts. Thank you so much.
@@LuckySketches I would 👺
@@perfectnothing. lol you like My Hero Academia so we already know your judgement is questionable 😂
Because portraits are very difficult to do and make them look respectable. Even for experienced artists, because faces have so much expression, making a smile just even slightly more curved or an eyebrow just barely more angled can COMPLETELY change the mood of he portrait
Rich Hopkins Honestly, most portrait tattoos I’ve seen look like shit, just because it’s so difficult. In many cases there’s just something off.
@@DanAndHoe exactly, I've know really good artists that just won't do portraits because they're just too difficult
They're also the only tattoos outside of names I think are generally bad ideas. Like lots of tattoos I love and loads will still look great when the person is older if they look after them properly but one wrinkle in the wrong place will ruin a portrait tatt. Plus my stepdad had one of my sister from when she was a baby and it looked like a little Asian girl so he seemed like a creep whenever he took us swimming. It's a cool tiger now, black and grey with bright blue eyes.
@ 1:15 he legit said “yes i did that and you would too for a check!” LOL
I have exactly one tattoo, it’s a sleeve. 3 years ago I lost my Dad to a brain aneurysm and he was a very religious man who raised me and my brother on his own when our mother walked out on us, he toiled and sacrificed to give us both the best possible life he could. I wanted to memorialize him, so I had the idea that since he was religious I would get a tattoo of a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak flying upwards into a ray of light from the sky to symbolize my Dad joining the afterlife. I wanted something that symbolized what my dad meant to me but also was something I could be proud to show off to people. My Tattoo artist made it look beautiful and did an amazing job. Respect your tattoo artist people they work hard to please you.
The return of “Dikimon!” Love how she tells the story every time❤️
Can I know where else she told the story, please?

The turtle: so rude lol
I really want to know which Digimon that dude wanted
Reminds me of the Mewtwo pokemon card with the egyptian art. I feel like it'd actually be a good tattoo
@@jasonsixx4581 If it was only Egyptian and Digimon, then it would work. But they wanted to do the whole thing in a Victorian line-work style, which is a pretty specific style with lots of detail (opposite of Digimon which is made simple for easy animation). Depending on the Digimon chosen, it could end up looking like a Eldrich horror if you do it badly.
@@christinevanzyl3106 but an eldritch horror Egyptian didigmon tattoo also sounds excellent?
I reckon agumom in an Egyptian getup would be super cute
@@tdr3471 I agree it could look cool, it wouldn’t really look like a Digimon though. Take agumon for example. The problem lies in combining all three styles to create a recognizable character. Here is an example of dinosaurs in the art style: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sydenham_studio.jpg
It’s completely different from the cartoon style. You might as well just ask for a dinosaur in a Egyptian pose, since the character won’t be recognizable anymore. Which admittedly is something I want to see now that I thought of it.
I’ve always thought of getting small cute tattoos but to see what some people wanted to get through this video surprised me lol 😂
That goats vs angels on a rib idea sounds amazing!
I've heard a lot of people around their 30s say lbgt instead of lgbt, i wonder if it's an age thing. It's very nice regardless though
I think it’s just a habit thing- they just started saying it that way without really thinking about it, rolls of the tongue easier for them.
when I came out it was GLBT... it also might have been different depending on where you lived, before the internet connected the entire world
the order of the acronym changed a lot over the last 20-30 years (at least in the usa) and also different languages have different order acronyms so like I often say gltb just because that's what I'm used to from my mother language ya know? but yeah it's also an age thing in the US
Why is everyone getting so triggered by him saying LBGT instead of LGBT? Doesn't it mean the same exact thing just with two letters switched? (Don't feel attacked, I am just wondering)
@@queendiamond770 Okay first off that's a gross misuse of the word triggered. A trigger is something that relates to trauma (eg you've been in a fire and now you can't stand the smell of gasoline because it reminds you of that and you get like a panicky response), what you mean is more like why are people upset about him using a different acronym. From what I can tell most are just repeating the same joke over and over, while others are just like mildly confused. But yeah it does mean the same thing, lgbt or lgbtq or lgbtq+ are just the more common acronyms nowadays
