- The Spectral Gate. You use it all the time, right? No, I didn’t think so. It’s one of those plug-ins nestling in one of Logic’s effects folders that you probably opened once, looked understandably baffled by and moved on. And yes, it’s not one of Logic’s prettiest plug-ins by any means. But what it can do is to provide a weird, liquid, overtone-y, resonant, digital quality to any sound you feed through it and this week, we’re celebrating its weird wonder.
I’ll walk you through its parameters and, in particular, explore its worth alongside the Autofilter and as a parallel processor on an Auxiliary bus.
00:00 Intro
00:42 What is Spectral Gate?
03:30 Super and Sub Energy processing
05:25 Modulation options
08:21 How does the Threshold affect the sound?
09:38 Spectral Gate as a parallel processor
11:44 Introducing a Bassline
12:35 Sending bassline to Spectral Gate
13:34 Spectral Gate and Autofilter in tandem
14:47 A/Bing with and without Spectral Gate
16:10 Spectral Gate solo’d
16:56 Summary
17:37 Unexpected dog debut! (blink and you’ll miss it)
Oh yay. 😊 I’d been hoping you’d cover this old weirdo sooner or later! 😃 Two things you hint at that make me want to explore further: at 13:09 when you activate Spectral Gate over the bass line, it almost sounds like a sidechained compressor. Which I think makes sense: you are automating a filter sweep that cuts most of the energy, so it’s not surprising that when that sweep is shaped like a sidechained kick envelope, it has a recognizable effect on the dynamics. Second: it doesn’t have to sound “digital” only: when you bring out the noisier (high end white noise) sounds in the bass line, it actually sounds to me like an effect David Tudor used a lot in his experimental work with feedback driven analog filters in the 1960s and 70s. Food for thought and experimentation, my favourite kind. Thanks so much for finally getting around to this one! 🎉
Great post - many thanks for sharing.
LMAO that side eye at 0:56. Perfectly encapsulated what it's like looking at old logic plugin UI
Just a gentle nudge to Apple that there is further redesign to do... ; ) Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this video Jono. Spectral Gate definitely is a hidden gem in Logic that has been around since the days of Logic Platinum (when it was still made by Emagic). Apple has not touched it since apparently. I remember creating some wild tracks with side-chained SG AND heavy automation, particularly of the gate frequency, plus a delay in the signal chain right after the SG. One can create CRAZY "swooooosh"-like effects with little effort.
Thanks so much for this. It’s great to see the love for this old-school gem!
The turkey leftovers haven't even gone off yet and Jono has released another video. I remember trying this plugin out way back in Logic 8 or thereabouts. That was when every plugin looked just as pretty as this one. I auditioned it by playing something on loop and going through the presets. When I went through them all I thought 'this plugin has nothing for me' and never looked at it again. Now I might have to apportion (see what I did there) some time and check it out again.
Always nice to discover a tool with a layer of dust and a squeaky hinge just ready to be polished up and reappraised. Thanks Warren, as always. All best wishes for 2024.
Another great tool for the toolbox, thanks Jono. Another great song title in there too... Liquid Zaps. I think am rediscovering a secret love of dance music !
Thanks John. Hope you’ve had a great Christmas and all best wishes for the new year.
Some golden nuggets here! Doing something good with nasty is always an inspiration 👍Jono
Thanks so much. I agree!
Hey thanks for this 👍
You’re welcome.
Great video, I think I'll start to use this! Never thought it can do those cool thinks. Thanks for sharing :)
You’re welcome Rogerio! I’m glad you enjoy it and hope it proves useful in your tracks.
Amazing with spectral gate on synth
Sure is!
1:00 That look, 😂 Great sound design tool and another fab tutorial. Thanks Jono..
You’re welcome! Happy New Year.
Very interesting stuff, Jono, thank you!
You’re welcome BF! Thanks so much.
Thanks and yes very overlooked !!
Thank you!
Love your videos Jono
Are you related to Biff of Back to the future?😂
Oi!
Brilliant... never used it before and i know exactly what i will be using it on in future!
Fantastic! Glad it was helpful.
Super interesting..Thanks so much!
Thanks Clark! You’re welcome.
🤣 The look of that plugin hurts me right in the aesthetics. Nice quirky results to be had with it - thanks for the ideas. Simply outré.
Also, did I ever tell you I invented "Inventing"?
D’you know what? I was rather beginning to suspect that you might have. Can I just say thanks, from all of us, because ‘inventing’ remains really popular. What a thing you did that day… 😉
Nice one. Had no idea this thing existed. It’s weird that apple doesn’t bother to modernize these plugins. Thank you.
I’m hoping that the despairing looks and the mild sarcasm on my part might provide a useful nudge to Apple’s GUI update department! Thanks as always, Andrew. All best wishes for 2024.
If you dig around in the drawer you’ll likely find some odd, forgotten tool and ask yourself, “What’s this for?” I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking it could be interesting with pads. Thanks, Jono.
It sure could, Gary. Look forward to hearing how that works out for you. All best wishes for 2024.
This thing is actually better looking than the vocoder 😀
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I’ve got a soft spot for the EVOC20, I must confess.
just testing it now on a synth line
Great, let me know how it’s sounding!
sounding interesting - need to practice more ;)@@jonobuchananmusic
Never gonna get that time back!
But what a way to have spent it!
just sounds like the washing machine.
New genre!
