I am getting one! And, as I live in British Columbia, Canada, with 10's of thousands of highway km's, I also ordered a +1 countershaft sprocket for those highway slogs getting to our hundreds of thousands of Km's of logging, mining and lumber trails here. I had been in the Honda camp, but I think this Triumph has so much more style, and, as I ride slowly, being 71 years old, I'm not ever going to push it hard.
Have fun
Check out the Husqavarna smartpillian 401
@@markcomisky7106 svartpilen not smartpillian lol
I was so disappointed with the SCL500 scrambler from Honda. The styling just looks like crap IMO and Triumph absolutely nailed it with the 400 line. I'm with you on this one. Also, cheers from Minnesota my northern friend 🤘🏻
Sounds like a great place to ride and live 👍. Enjoy!!
Hey everyone
I am an owner of scrambler 400x in Mysore, India, purchased in Feb 1st week. No doubt it's an amazing motorcycle. But I seem to have a lot of issues with the electronics of it.
Let me explain in a bit of detail hoping that the message reaches the right people in Triumph.
The day I got my first service done, the same evening my motorcycle wouldn't start at all. It was fixed by the service center stating that there was an electrical contact issue with the immobilizer.
Went on a long ride (about 1700 kms) and while on the ride, I had instrument cluster/console issues. Speedometer fluctuations starting happening and it stopped working. Riding at a 120 kmph but speedometer showing Zero :PP
Resulting in stoppage of reading of odometer, mileage (dynamic and average), distance to empty etc. Did not clock almost 700 kms because of this. Meanwhile, front ABS braking issue had started. Rejection of application of front brake. Almost caused an accident because of it.
This was fixed by stating that a bolt in the front wheel was loose and it was overlooked during PDI (pre-delivery inspection)
2 weeks later, engine starting issue (immobilizer related) has started again. No fix found yet. Service center states that it's a software problem...
It's frustrating honestly.
Anyone facing this internationally, kindly do let me know if a fix is found.
Thank you for giving an actual review of the bike.
@@Agm1995gamer Service center fixed the issue. Antenna of the immobilizer was replaced under warranty and a new set of keys were provided (newly paired). No more issues
@skandaprasad2160 is the bike worth it?? I'm planning to buy this as my first bike :)
@@nickmuffin1722 Yup, if it werent for those one off issues, i love the bike! I'd def go for it :D
I bought it yesterday 🎊
Rode this bike at Daytona Bike Week at the Daytona dealership and it is a really fun bike! I’ve ridden the Triumph Street Scrambler (now Scrambler 900) and sure that’s a better bike for more money but this one FEELS like a triumph bike! They definitely nailed that aspect of it nicely.
I have three other Triumphs and just picked up the 400 about three weeks ago love it not only is it a triumph. It’s a great motorcycle. It’s fun it’s light. It’s maneuverable great mileage. Wonderful on dirt roads in the city and back roads and not too bad on the highway. I’m still breaking it in but it’ll do 70 miles an hour at 6000 RPM.
Im breakin-in mine too. 1200 km incl oil changes at 200 and 1000 km odo.
I get 85-90 kmph at 4500-5000 rpm. That tacho is tough to read accurately. Maybe she will ease up with more mileage, but right now the engine response doesnt encourage me to go over 100kmph..60miles
So theres no top end punch....but suspension, steering geometry, riding ergos, brakes too..cant complain about these
I am thinking of leaving the Intercptr650 to do garage duty and show my lime green Scrambler Ladakh this summer
Poop! The speed limits on Texas highways is often 70-75.
Got mine 2 weeks ago. Did a test ride and put my deposit down same day. LOVE. IT! Drove it home but Work/Life/Weather means not ridden since. I’m actually changing my job and hours so I can ride more! It’s the bike I’ve been waiting for.✊🏼
You are smart. Life is too short. Enjoy it!
Rode this bike in Madrid in february. Great looking bike and fit an finishing are very good. The engine is very quiet, does not vibrate, has enough power and fantastic low rev torque. It breaks well and ergonomics and comfort were perfect with my hight and weight (1,71 m, 63kg). Clutch is light and everything is very smooth. Stability is nice and you feel the 19" front wheel. I would recommend this bike to my son and even to an advanced driver. Fantastic value-price ratio.
On 26 of March i`ll get my Scrambler 400 X in carnival red here in Hamburg/Germany, the most english City outside of Great Britain🥰
It's been 4 months since I have been riding my scrambler 400x and I do have to say after the 1st service, bike does feel lot smoother.
ya i have around 3000km and its way smoother now
Smoother as in „no vibration at higher speed“?
I have a green 400X in my garage now. I have only had a couple of short rides so I am just getting used to it. I waited 5 months for it I owned a KTM 390 Adventure for a couple of years and sold it as I wasn't using it enough off road. I feel the styling is spot on and not so quirky as the Swartpillin or the 390. This is my 5th Triumph. I am pleased with my choice.
I just got the green one today myself. It's in my garage next to my bonneville T120.
Triumph had a vision for a new 400cc platform, and they made the Speed 400 as well as the Scrambler 400x, with more to come, possibly...
And as far as the Scrambler goes, they made alle the right decisions and had the job done, it´s perfect (as good as it gets) for what it´s ment to be!
And I bought it and I´m happy with it. Usability and fun in one great looking package, not to mention the sound.
YES - they absolutely nailed it!
Picked up mine today and had a good ride for couple of hours. Downgraded from a 1000cc 150 hp sportstourer, and I can say that I didn't miss the sportstourer at all. This just seems to fit much better with what I need and how we can use motorcycles powers these days. It's definitely a treat to ride and I can only recommend trying it out.
Exactly 👍🏾 I had the Triumph speed triple 1200rs , 180 hp that’s totally unusable in the uk 90% of the time, I’m gonna demo the Scrambler it looks so good 🎉
What’s insane is I literally have a gsxs1000gt since october (150 hp sports tourer) and i’m also thinking about getting a scrambler
I think these will sell really well, great real world back road fun bike, if they had an option for spoked wheels (purely for aesthetics) I think they’d sell even more.
Great reviews as always from you. And having lived in Scotland for 22 years it was great to see Portishead where I used to live
I believe analog speedometer can be treated as a feature since fewer and fewer bikes use it. Especially since a color TFT display would not fit this motorcycle. Anyway, I'm really waiting for a Svartpilen 401 2024 review!
I own 1290 super duke for the moment. Today, I went for a test ride on Panigale V2, Scambler 400, 390 Duke.
Scambler 400 came out as the best on street. Smooth gear shift, power band, riding position. I’m blowing away with it. This could possibly be my second bike.
Did you test ride the 2024 390 duke? Or the previous gen?
@@Vanity7k 2024
@@winner1338 interesting.. i’m considering the scrambler, the duke, and the svartpilen as a second bike to my gsxs1000gt as well. I’ll have to test ride them and see!
@@Vanity7k 390 riding position is so bad. You'll notice it.
Are you a tall rider? I'm 6"2
Looked at one at Fowlers a few weeks ago and was really impressed with the quality for a bike at that price point. I have a Scrambler 1200XE so know what to look at and compare and I agree Triumph will sale them by the bucket load.
Sweet looking bike, and a thorough review.
Yep, Triumph nailed it on design and aesthetics, and it’s a very capable bike for what it’s intended for.
Around town and a few dirt roads, plus good fuel mileage will make this one a good in-town commuter, and weekend plaything.
I have a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE on order, and am really looking forward to delivery. According to my local Triumph dealership, my bike is on a slow boat somewhere, in transit to the U.S.
Happy Trails!
Still waiting on mine! Hopefully it actually arrives this week.
Just picked up one yesterday (green), having fun so far, trying to break it in gently.
Noticed when next to the 900 and other 1200 you can clearly see the level of finish. The machined cooling fins on the engine on the 400 are quite rough compared to the bigger bikes which are flawless. Not a complaint considering the price difference. Ild have one
Finally a proper honest review. I watched I think 50 reviews of this bike from other reviewers and they all seem to forget that there are other bikes too around this price. For me at least, the Hunter 350 is a better option for beginner city commuter for a lot less money.
Great review.. I’m collecting mine on Friday 😊
I rode one yesterday and it is every bit as much fun as you think. I rode a bunch of bikes yesterday at a demo and it was my 2nd favorite ride next to the Speed Twin 1200. Yes - I liked riding the 400 more than the 900 and more than the Daytona. It's a fun little bike. 1st gear is useless on the street though. 2nd gear starts worked way better for around town riding. *Edit to clarify - I rode the Speed 400, not the Scrambler.
This would be just wonderful next to my Desert X
It is a good looking thing, best in class by far. And will be a bullseye for Triumph, well done!
Don't forget Fantic Caballero, which in this segment is maybe the only one that can actually be called a scrambler, unlike this, Honda or Husky.
The Caballero in its Rally variant is a real scrambler, but there are some suspected quality issues. Thus, I ordered the 400x…admittedly also for its optics…😊
@@johannesmarg6903 I do not blame you for going for Triumph. For sure a solid choice. But even a basic Caballero is much more of a scrambler than this. That low exhaust is just something I cannot get over. And the fact that this is a Triumph only by a badge and service prices :D but I can understand why it is tempting for majority of people. Hope you will enjoy it :)
@@michalnemsak7886 I definitely will! I do have another Triumph, a 2002 Tiger 955i. That bike never disappointed me in 22 years, so I am a little biased. But the Caballero really tempted me, but I have to admit, I will rarely do some real scrambling anyhow, mainly due to lack of suitable and accessible routes here in Germany…(signs and restrictions everywhere these days…).
Have a wonderful and safe riding season,
Johannes
@@michalnemsak7886 Does it really matter who made it? I mean, triumph builds in Thailand
Great review, thanks. I really like the look, especially of the street version, so I'd like to try both. My only concern as a larger rider with a dodgy hip is whether the scrambler will be a better fit for me.
I am close to 300km on my 400X and it gets way smoother vibe wise with break in--rode 7 hours of highway yesterday at 120-140km [75-85mph]--i can do what you want...suspension softer too now after breaking in
Thank you, I'm thinking of buying one
I’ve changed to more 50/50 tires and added bar end mirrors. The only other nod will be the aluminum sump guard, when available. Hoping the forks will become less harsh after breaking in. Otherwise some slight changes up front might be warranted. The rear is great as is.
Tried one out whilst trident was being serviced last week , spent 4 hours with a demo bike almost 100 miles if only it had been launched 18 months ago i think i would have brought one coming from a duke 390 to the trident . tempted will have to see !
Got to say it looks great. I want one!
You touched on the Scrambler’s stance relative to the ergonomics for riders of different height. Another big consideration is that the Scrambler stance also visually matches better with larger riders. I’m a taller rider and once owned an air cooled Bonnie SE. With its 17” wheels it was substantially smaller than the T100 and Scrambler versions. I sometimes thought I looked like an ape humping a football. I ended up selling it on in favor of dimensionally larger bikes.
Wow, worried about your bike as a fashion accessory?
Did you have to come out with the ubiquitous condescending cliche ‘beginner bike’?
I want one and I’ve been riding 25 years.
Great video. Do you have links to the gear you are wearing?
Great video, great stats, a 400 twin might have been a better choice.
that would be better choice but the price after that would've been much higher
Even if it was a 315cc Twin, it would have been great. But being from India, let me tell you Bajaj has played a safe game here.
Rather than targeting the RE650 twins, they targeted the loads of 350cc Air Cooled Long Strong Bikes we have here.
I owned a Himalayan up until recently and I genuinely felt right at home on this bike. The best thing though is that it has so much more power so you don’t have to immediately pin it on first and second gear to get off on a light at a big road. I’m 5’7” with a 29” inseam and can flat foot this fine. Genuinely recommend folks test ride it if you’re curious
Single sounds better imo
@@Cruiser203haha no
That engine is gonna sound awesomely retro with an open exhaust. I’d opt for the Speed , street version, unless you live really rural with lots of gravel roads that you have to ride on to get to where you normally go. And then I’d have an extra set of wheels with something like a Michelin Road 6 mounted for dedicated road riding
I'm 6"2 so I thinking the speed is too small for me
Im hoping to get this one as my first bike!
Own one and am enjoying it..
Love that color !
I think they nailed it. The Cons it has are completely understandable due to its price, size and style, the rest is great.
Okay @motobob great review, but what would you choose between this and the Husky Svartpillen 401? Gotta make a choice soon 😉
This does look great, but I would like to see one with proper knobbly tyres on - bet that would be even better.
Hoping there will be a vid on the Street 400 as well.
I hope Triumph makes a Scrambler 660
Just buy an Intterceptor 650 and some tyres.
To be honest Indian bike manufactures leads the way when it comes to making reliable robust economical bikes.
Thanks for the info. Is that a Merlin yoxall jacket? Thanks
I tried one a few weeks ago found it really strange compared to my 1200 speed twin ,might try it again and maybe a KTM 390
The baby Scrambler probably need an extra tooth in the front sprocket to bring the highway revs down - easy fix mate!
Sure..that feels useful...
Lower rpm while cruising is so calming. My interceptr does 100kmph cruising at 4000 rpm feels stress free
@@anthonysilvestri4946won't that also bring down the lower end torque and punchiness of the engine?!
@@myselfyuvi Yes - but I think the trade off would be worth it...
@@anthonysilvestri4946 then I think you should be riding speed 400 which offers just the kind of performance you are looking for. For me personally the off-road capability of 400x and punchiness of its engine is much more desirable.
@@myselfyuvi Thanks but I'll stick with my Triumph Tiger 1050 (with an extra tooth in the front sprocket) 👍
It needs the option of tubeless spoked wheels before I'd consider going off road with it & going off road is what a scrambler should be able to do. I think the same about the competition, too.
Any servicing data been released yet, valve shim checks? As for suggesting getting a Honda 500twin to avoid "vibes", is that not what many people complained about the 500 twin for, vibes at motorway speeds?
I am doing a test ride this week.....might be the dealer, might be the brand....if the videos are even close I will be buying one. ANYONE can have fun/go fast on a big bike! Lol
Hello Motobob
What's your opinion on the Rieju 500 Adventure bike
2 days back, received delivery of my 400X
Great looking bike
When will we be able to see your review of Himalayan RE
This is a very nice bike indeed. I really like the look of the Royal Enfield bikes, but they are way under powered. Thanks for sharing. Great stuff as always. Ride safe everyone. Cheers
Have you tried the Jawa 500 scrambler? (built by Mirhandra in India under license from the Chezck parent company).
Close to nailed it. looks great and that means a lot, lot more than anything else. Hope they sell zillions. I like it. Now a little more offroad edition from the factory.
Hi bob : what about the Fantic Caballero 500 vs the Triumph scrambler ? Non body did a video about this natural comparison
Anyone know what helmet Rob is wearing? Really nice, love the tinted visor…
Can't decide between Triumph Speed 400 and Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, what would you choose as fun daily commuter?
Bajaj is a majority small bike manufacturer but has a load of experience in the 400cc single cylinder segment with all the 390 KTMs and its own dominar 400!!
And now the triumph 400s.
Analogue speedo! Sold!
이거 한국에 출시 되면 대박 날듯..... 타던 바이크 팔고 바이크 못정하고 있었는데 이거 보자마자 마음 정함.......바이크 정말 이쁘다.. ABS TCS 까지....대박..
can you take off the rear seat for an additional lagguage rack?
Great video! I'm looking to add this to my bikes this year... I want to look at it from pure off-road ability point of view - maybe even try to take it to the same roads I go to on my Yamaha XT250 - I wonder how far this would go...
Please keep the new RE Himalayan 450 (with the liquid cooled Sherpa engine) shortlisted if your focus is off road. This little Scrambler is a versatile bike, will take you up and down a small hill, but do not expect hard core off roading from it.
Being from India, I have test ridden both. The new Himalayan’s suspension is very versatile let it be on road or off road.
@@chinmaychiplunkar Thank you for the details - I'll try to test-ride Himalayan as soon as I can get to it!
Waiting for the new Husqvarna 401 reviews to come out because it's pretty close between the Speed 400 and the Vitpilen 401 for me!
I'm the same, also thinking Himalayan 450
Want to see a bonafide review of the capablilites of the 400x? You gotta watch them Indian motovloggers. I just watched this 5'3" rider ride the 400x to the mountrain top Sandakphu(near Darjeeling) wihich is at 12,000 feet! Entire track is steep and filled with rocks. Not a single bolt loose or failure.
What jacket are you wearing in this video @motobob? :D
It looks good.
Stunning bike
can't wait for Svartpilen 401 :) i love that bike.. But Triumph's 400's looks fantastic.
WOULD THE SPEED OR SCRAMBLER BE SUITABLE FOR BIGGER OUT OF TOWN RIDES?
i want a 400cc thruxton rs!
Could you please compare this and continental GT
As seen in other reviews the brake hose hardwear oxidises while you're looking at it - defo built down to a price
The simple tacho is a Pro, not a Con...but yeah, one thing I agree..this should have been a twin. Doesn't Bajaj have a parallel twin platform?
Love this bike. Did I want it to weigh more like 300 pounds? Yes. However, the weight helps on the highway, on windy days and when getting brush by wind from big trucks.
Did a show room sit at the weekend. Defo high seat. I’m 5ft 8 and it’s tippy toes on the 400. Switched to the 900 and with the lower seat it’s a much better feel. Also double the price like 🤦🏼♂️
I'd like to see one after a year on British roads before I make a judgement on if this is a genuine quality Triumph. Some of the banjo bolts briefly glimpsed are already corroding.
It absolutely won't be as good. Given all the costs rising and people's ability to buy things shrinking, they're going to have to cut corners. It's just inevitable and not anyone's fault
what apps were you using while riding (mobile) ?
Best looking in the class by far. The engine lacks a little performance. A shame it isn’t closer to the maximum 47 allowed bhp in the learner class. I hear from a few owners that the durability of the finish on the engine casings and other areas isn’t the best. I think you’ll need to be diligent with the AF50 or the equivalent anti corrosion treatments.
i'v seen melting paint on street triples
Nice review. Looks like a good bike for lots of folks and riding styles. I have to laugh, though, whenever "off-road" comes up. No, it's not a trail bike and while I fully understand why you have to caveat in this way, wow, those off-road riders really need to get some perspective. It's an "all road" bike, which is what most of us want. Well done.
I would prefer them to do a 500 Twin scram
What gloves were you wearing?
I can't see this bike spending too much time off road or touring so it looks pretty good to me.
Motobob, which navigation app do you use while riding?
Thanks!
I’m using Calimoto in this video - there’s a discount link in the description as they’re a channel sponsor 👍
Thank you very much!@@motobob
You do know that Bajaj also makes the Svartpilen 401 as well as the Duke 390 right??
Which nav app was that?
Do you ever say anything bad about any bike? Just asking.
Cheers, I’m gonna skip the video if it’s like that, I’m after a genuine review not a sales pitch because a manufacturer lend them a bike
There was this other site testing a Porsche SUV, lauding it big time except the one bad thing they must say to look genuine.... So they didn't like the SHAPE of the rear view mirror .😅
@@Stillbusy105 at 10.40 you'll get pros and cons
I don't think they want to jeopardise the holidays and trips the motorcycle companies give them.🎉
Is the seat height adjustable for shorter legs!?
Just as i suspected going into watching this video. As soon as i saw the numbered pros vs cons list, i predicted right away that the cons would almost 100% be associated with the fact that this is a BUDGET, smaller displacement bike. If you look at the price of this bike, and what it offers all around, those cons are practically irrelevant. This thing is a HELL of a value for the price.
In cons, the headlight power also needs to be added.
To big seat height for me, being a oldie with bad hips , but saw it in the flesh last week at my dealers and looks well made for me . Thinking of getting the Speed 400 instead because where I live on the iow , if you get out of third your in the sea 😂😂 + there’s lots of great b roads and winding bends . Ref the brakes , they are Brembo but their smaller bike ones . Ps the scrambler in green looks brilliant 😊👍😂
A pair of PIRELLI SCORPION MT60 RS tyres on that speed 400, and you maybe set. 👍
I will recomend you to try the scramblers front sprocket as well as it make the bike feel even more fun.
If you want more info you can watch video of motorinc they described it very well
So I have had my 400x since January and so far, so good. Had a 5 year break from motorcycles, having sold my 2004 boney before covid.
It was the first one in ROI as far as I know. Still running in so not fully up to speed, but has plenty enough performance for legal speeds. It feels lovely and light compared to my t120, 60kg+ less, which should see me into old age. I looked at the new himi, the fantic caballero and the husky, but the value, style, size and overall quality, sold it to me. The only a couple issues for me. The gearing in first is very low and I usually pull away 2nd gear and it gets a little vibe at motorway speeds ss a result. I'll look into changing a sprocket to give it longer legs. Also the brushed aluminium surfaces could do with an ACF50 coating. The radiator guard and it's fixings are showing rust already. The lack of accessories being a new model is a pain. Small things, easy fixed. Overall I'm really happy and glad to be back on two wheels !!
can you compare speed400 & scramb400x..
You seem to like owning several bikes, why not give the garage building an overhaul, extend it some how so you can get bikes in and out without having to juggle them all. Can be expensive depending how you extend but there might be cheap ways of doing so.
Maybe add a large Asgard shed to keep a couple of bikes in? I have one and it's excellent! Maybe have one just for the goldwing as that's your largest bike. (Plus the build of the shed could be good youtube content)
I keep thinking of a second bike and i could fit another in my shed but I'd have less room if i want/need to work on 1 bike and i probably would have to juggle them about depending which i wanted to use. And would i be put off riding one cos i need to move the other to get it out and would knowing that put me off bothering to go out in the first place 🤷♂️
I love my speed twin and keep thinking of chopping it in for the Z900 RS, your vid hasn't help my decision cos i love the speed twin for all it's character but the Z900 RS would be more comfortable for me being tall, but i don't know if i could give that character up for comfort! Your vid has given me more things to think about though, maybe i should test ride a Z900 RS again 🤔
I was really looking forward to seeing one of these and I did last week. Amazing for the price point but the seat was instantly uncomfortable! Like totally unacceptable to me, I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue with this bike?
The Svart ang 400x are distant cousins though. Svart is made by KTM, KTM was used to be done by Bajaj, and 400x is Bajaj as well.
which quadlock mount is that exactly??
I can’t help but think how much better this bike would look without the hand guards, are they removable ? Bar end mirrors would also look a lot better than the stock ones.
Definitely removable
