Kayak Fly Fishing the Ozarks | Illinois River

- Well, the day had come. I had waited a few weeks for the opportunity to paddle the new kayak, weekend storms in the Ozarks had been detouring me from getting on the water sooner.
I felt all the excitement as this day kicked off, but also super nervous that I was forgetting something. I spend lots of time preparing and planning all my adventures, but this was something new and I wanted to make sure I was ready.
I selected this 4-mile stretch on the Illinois River to set my baseline. Easy moving section of the river to test the kayak and my skills or lack of. The first minute I started paddling I was just so overwhelmed with joy I can’t even put it in words - “Just so stinking beautiful” you’ll hear me say in the video.
I was plugged into the outdoors and in overload - so much beauty all around me and the curiosity of what was around the next bend in the river kept me engaged and excited the whole trip.

So Cool seeing the section where fishing all started for me. Not very many people fish that stretch. Upstream of the drop in is awesome too! I’ve noticed over the last 20 years the smallies have really taken over that stretch and are everywhere.

Just found ya this morning and love finding another fly fisher and kayaker in the South. Hello from Southern Oklahoma! I love fly fishing and now have a fishing kayak to get out there with. Am not new to kayaking either, have had a couple sea going 18 footers for several years but wanted something more stable and that could put a trolling motor on. I'd love to kayak fish with you someday if we can ever make it happen.

Great video man...just got back from Heber Springs..fished the Little Red River. Water was high but still managed to catch about 6 trout in a few hours. Keep slaying em bro!

Looks like you had a great float in your new Crescent LT. I took mine out a couple weeks ago and was impressed on how it handled. You may of just got one fish but the adventure looked awesome. I just got a Blue Dot kayak cart and love it. My next stop with kayak will be on the Curren in a couple of weeks.

Are you liking the Crescent LT? I couldn't find a Crescent dealer in the Kansas City area, so end up going with a Jackson Bite. It's been great on lakes, but I still need to get it on moving water.

I may have missed it in the video, but what section of the river is this and is it publicly accessible to float or did you have to have permission from private land to access? I recognized the chamber springs takeout but was unaware there was a put in above that section thanks!
Kincheloe RD access just off 412, check video description for GPS point. When reviewing GIS data it seems this is state owned (old road) parcel 18-99999-999. Also on older maps it showed up as part of the Wedington WMA. It’s also used by the Illinois River Watershed Partnership for river cleanup access posted on map during recent event. I would consider this open public access. Also found on GoPaddling app. Hope this helps thanks for watching.
Just be careful and don’t drop trash on the ground at the launch where the bridge is. My buddy works for the lady that owns the land along all of the river and she isn’t afraid to call the warden if you give her a reason
