- We used to have dark-stained original timber floors. Now they're painted a lovely white using PAVING PAINT.
Come and see why I painted our floors, the product I used and if I would recommend painted floors.

How great is this! Looks amazing.
I have been wanting to paint my hardwood floors for over 20 years, but everyone always said no, no, no, don't do that, you will ruin the beauty of the wood. My floors are high shine glossy finish over red/orange stain and I'm done with looking at them like that and I've ordered PPG Breakthrough paint in the color delicate white and I'm going to catch h*ll for doing this, but I'm going to do it anyway! I've seen alot of other ladies on here who have done it as well and they are satisfied with it and I'm glad you did this video. It just adds to the feeling that I'm doing the right thing, Thank you!
Did you do it?!!!!!!! 😮
I was very nervous to do it, it’s such a big commitment. You could try one small space first like we did and see how you like it
I absolutely love what you had done I live in a old WW2 Farragut building moved into town and I have a combination of several types of wood flooring in the house. I will look for paving paint and give it a go because I don’t have anything to lose at this point really I cannot afford new flooring at today’s inflation prices and the fact it drys so quickly is outstanding
just be sure to give the floor a light sand if the surface is glossy
Oh thank you very much for the advice to sand before painting
I just pulled out all my gross bedroom carpets to the subfloor. I had to do some patching with wood patch and a bit of light sanding but then I painted them with the most stunning dark teal floor paint in satin. The transformation is stunning! And it’s easy to throw another coat on if there’s any wear. It’s my bedroom so there’s not a lot of traffic but if I did this in the main area, and I will, I might go with a gloss for durability. I love that I can put another coat on any worn areas! The whole bedroom transformation with primer and paint was under $100.
Love love lovvvve what you did with your floors. Stunning. Thank you Xx
Hope it inspires you
Thank you so much for getting back to me on the color you used on your floors. We did something very similar by staining our old floors and have had similar issues which is why we've decided to paint them instead. Thank you for sharing this detailed video! I will follow up with a before and after picture.
Cannot wait to see the result!
Looks great!!
I love the look of the floors Lindy...they certainly lift everything and make the kitchen cabinets pop...well done ✅...💖🥰🇦🇺
Thanks Linda
I’ve been wanting to paint my wood floor in my kitchen, yours look fantastic! You’ve inspired me… I’m gonna go for it. Thanks ❤😊
Oh gosh, thats great! You will not regret it. I love mine and will do it again at our new house
Love painted floors. Yours looks an ongoing!
Thank you for ur video! I will deff paint my floor now❤️
I love your painted floors! I was searching for videos on painting floors and came across yours. Lovely…I hope to do mine soon😁👍
Ours have held up very well. There are a couple of patches but it’s easy to recoat
Ok, I’ve started! You inspired me so I first painted my bathroom floor…and love it. So now I’ve done the small hall, and next I’m going to do the kitchen. Thanks ❤😊
I started in our bathroom too because I was so afraid it would look awful 😂
A year later. Hello beautiful woman. I have a wood floor that's just terrible and I hate rugs. I have been looking for at least 5 months trying to find a great way to do them. You just gave me the best idea. Wow. I'm so happy. This is perfect. Thank you.
I'm glad to help. I hope your floors look amazing!
Just beautiful!! You did an awesome job!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing.
We recently painted our timber floors white, with Feast Watson Floor paint. We love it! It adds a beautiful contract to our cedar walls.
We also used feast watson liming paint in our old old (we chose the blue colour) and did 3 coats i loved the serenity of it as it felt like water which was really calming.
I would have used Feast Watson too but I couldn’t get any floor paint. This paving paint is working really well though
I do agree with you painting the floors. Am planning to do that as well.
Ummm, luvely.❤ Excellent decision and beautiful work.
Well done! Congratulations on your success.
Thanks Sally
You’re house looks beautiful with those floors! I’m going to try it in our entranceway and if we like it do the kitchen which has old old wood floors. I’ve been wanting to do it for a couple of years now, and I’m so glad I saw your video.
I loved our floors. Once I had done it in the bathroom I was convinced I had to go all through the house
I love your floors they’re beautiful
Thanks Debbie. It’s been nearly a year. They’re holding up well
Hi Lindy. Came across your channel desperately searching through CZcams for some Aussie inspiration. Couldn’t believe my luck! Having a lovely arvo binge watching to catch up xx 🇦🇺
That's great. Please share with other Aussies! I'd love to have a place for everyone with content specific to us
@@blackbird.cottage Absolutely will do!
Hi. Wanted to say a big thank you for posting this video. I’ve been searching for a vintage style apartment in Melbourne which I’ve finally found and painted the wooden floors white. It looks fantastic and glad I could learn from your video. I’m glad I read through the comments first where you mentioned about using a primer. I used a primer and the paving paint which I was lucky to get as I’m told it has been discontinued. The floors are bullet proof! Anyway thanks again and all the best 🙏
I'm so happy it was helpful
Great!
i LOVE PAINTED FLOORS PERSONALLY. THERE IS JUST SO MANY THINGS YOU DO WITH PAINT TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN.
The paving paint looks lovely in your home! I am planning the renovation of our family foursquare home (Still has the original beautiful wide trim). The wood floors are very worn and although I am game to try, I don't think I can bring them back. Painting would be a great solution. The finish would be so much easier to clean, brighten the spaces, and still look appropriate for the period. Thank you from Ashtabula, Ohio.
I love your painted floors. It's actually a trend now as I have seen these painted floors in new construction. We did hardwood all throughout our home but i am looking to paint our floors in the master bedroom. Low traffic so maybe a whitewashed pine?
whitewashed would be lovely. Limed floors were a trend years ago. I love them
Thank you! You motivated me to go for it! And I like your colors. I'm doing an en suite that has wood floors that were covered with tile AND linoleum, and are just too damaged to sand. It's an option. If it doesn't work out I can cover with LVT!
That was my thought too. I did our ensuite first
@@blackbird.cottage I did it and it ended up looking great!
The floors look fantastic! How have they held up with the dogs’ antics?
I also bought a farmhouse.the original part from. 1910 has carpet and we are going to pull it up and I want to paint the floors also.thanks for the tip..I was going to make chalk paint, but I think your idea is better
This type of paint works really well as it is designed for a floor.
I suggest you do NOT chaulk paint your floors. Mine were chaulk painted 3yrs/a and they are not holding up the poly didn't cover well and they bleed grey chauk mess and peel and chip. I am wanting to cover and wondering if this might stick and cover because mine are very dark too. I can't sand because it's unbelievably dusty. I just tried chemical stripping and it's really gummy. The chaulk soaks up the stripper and want to roll around not scrape off.
I love the way the floor looks. It certainly is an option for us as well. May I ask what the colour of your kitchen cabinets and the sideboard is?
The cabinets and trims are Dulux Domino. The cabinet is Bird On the Hill mineral paint. Colour is Black Cat
I have wooden floors, but not sure Hubby would paint them. I love the look of your floors. Definitely like the lighter colour. Does it mark easily now it's lighter?
It’s so much better because any scuff marks come right off. I find washing is easier too
It looks a lot better white. Very pretty. Yes I will be painting floorboards and great tip using that paint. How did you apply the paint ? X
I used a roller on a long pole and cut the edges in with a paint brush. It took 3 coats because our floors were so dark.
I found your video as I was looking for info on Black Japan for a 1910 cottage, my floors have been polished that yellow/orange and i want to get rid of them and was hesitant on Black Japan for all the reasons you've listed. Do I need to get the floorboards sanded before painting? I have a floor sander booked who was going to stain them, but i can just get them to sand them instead.
We sanded ours with the orbital sander to provide a key for the paint but the floors were by no means stripped of the Black Japan. I would put a white primer on first too as the floor paint in our attic looks nicer after we did that and has held up better.
I’m ripping plywood birch plywood and putting it all over my house as a inexpensive wood flooring I have wide planks it looks great but I’m thinking about painting how would you waterproof the wet areas like the kitchen? For example because the planks aren’t perfectly exactly the same size so there are some gaps, which I really like that look but I wanna make sure it’s waterproof.
Thanks for the great video! I painted my timber floorboards White with Feast Watson floor paint but after about 5 years I started to get chips and worn out bits even with sanding and doing two coats. I’m ready to paint again and heard pavement paint is a lot more stronger.. does it have a satin finish? Or did you use a sealant? Thanks in advance🙌
The finish is satin but it goes matt quite quickly. Id put a varnish over the next time round for extra durability
Your home is simply BEAUTIFUL! Love YOUR painted floors!! How's it holding up to scratching with the dogs and foot traffic? #thanks!! :)
I have just given it another coat after a year. There were small spots of wear where we walked but then again I never sanded it in the first place and it was water based going over oil based stain so I’m okay with that
@@blackbird.cottage AWESOME! THANKS for the quick reply!! :)
@@blackbird.cottage, truly helpful info! My wife and I are close to pulling the trigger on painting our wood floors!! #thanks!! :)
Seeing this 2 yrs after it was posted. How is the paint holding up? Thanks.
Did you get bleeding from the old stain? Did you use a primer? How many coats? Can you do a review video pretty please!!!
I did three coats with no primer. and there has been no bleeding. I would do a light sand next time I think
Looks gorgeous! Did you sand the floors first before applying the pavement paint?
Just a very light sand in the high traffic areas.
Thanks!
Did you get the paving paint tinted? What primer do you suggest please? Thank you.
Yes. I had the primer tinted to a Dulux colour. I didn’t use a primer but it couldn’t hurt for longevity. A cost of clear varnish at the end would be good too
I would like to paint my floors too. But wondering how often do u have to repaint them?
If you put a couple of coats of clear varnish over you should not need to paint them for quite a few years. It would be the same as having clear varnish on bare timber
I miss your videos I hope everything is going well :)
Everything is great. We’ve had so much going on there’s been no time for editing videos. Thanks so much for asking xxx
How does the painted floors hold up now with the dogs?
No problems at all
Did you put a sealer on the painted floors?
Yes. Clear matt varnish
How are your floors holding up? Are they easy to clean? Thanks so much
easier than dark and they hide more. I have recoated once but if I had done proper prep I probably would not have had to
@@blackbird.cottage What prep would you recommend ? Sanding ,undercoat/primer, or both? Did you have to repaint it all or just spot touchups. We have water stained floating floors to hide.I'm so inspired by your place- looks great!
do you have to put a varnish over the top
I didn't the first time and it lasted well but I would recommend it for extra durability
I adore painted floors, but I am totally afraid to do it incase it scrapes off
I haven't heard of "pavers " paint. I am wondering if porch paint is similar.
Paving paint is paint for concrete. I don't know what that would be called where you are. It's the kind you might use to paint your garage floor maybe?
How long did it take to paint the whole floor. And do you live in the USA. Because of your accent.
It only took a few hours as this paint dries quickly so you can move furniture around the room. I am in Australia.
Did you have to sand the floors first?
No. But when I recoated recently I sanded the most worn areas lightly with an orbital sander. It came up well
Great job and tips. Thanks! I painted a concrete garage floor in Africa with roof paint. Held up well. Now I'm in South America living a n a 70 year old colonial house with original hardwood floors that were painted, back then, with solvent paint. No one here, including paint shops, believe wood can be painted with acrylic paint. The solvent ( oil based) paint on much of the floors boards is really worn down and on other parts is completely worn off. Tips? Paint is really expensive, almost unaffordable here. But the floors must be painted. Really really ugly! Paint is from 70 years ago, house not cared for in decades. Do you think a decent acrylic paint will do the job and hold up... no chipping, scratches? Thanks. Enjo uoy
It holds up if you put a sealer over the top
Feather soft looks a lot like Sherwin Williams alabaster.
Your video is interesting but the music is too loud,You don't need the music.
Way to much yap.
