  • A morning stroll through the coastal village of Jaywick, Essex.
This video was filmed on Sunday 19th February, 2023.
The camera used for filming is a Sony FDR-X3000.
Jaywick is a coastal village in the Tendring district of Essex, England, 2 miles (3 km) west of Clacton-on-Sea. It lies on the North Sea coast of England, 60 miles (97 km) from London and 17 miles (27 km) from Colchester. It was constructed in the 1930s as a holiday resort for Londoners, but has, over time, declined to a point where it is regularly mentioned as one of the most deprived area of the country.
In 2010, Jaywick was assessed as the most deprived area in England. In September 2015, it was again named as the most deprived, according to the indices of deprivation based on several factors including: poverty, crime, education and skill levels, unemployment and housing, after being assessed in 2012-13. Referring to the older estates in Jaywick, the headmistress of Frobisher Primary School said "When you go to certain parts of it, you are quite shocked that you are in England." In 2012, Jaywick was labelled the UK's youth unemployment hotspot. Randeep Ramesh, writing in The Guardian, noted that there has been little employment available since the Butlins holiday camp closed in 1983. Local charity Signpost has helped young people find employment, which has become difficult due to many jobs being a significant distance away in Colchester or Ipswich. Tightening of building regulations has meant that simple builders jobs for cash are now illegal without appropriate health and safety training.
Geographically, Jaywick is relatively isolated and by not being part of a large inner-city area, it has not had the investment opportunities afforded to other deprived areas in the country. However, there is now a firm commitment to invest in the future of the area and support the local community. The regeneration of Jaywick Sands is already underway and Tendring District Council is looking forward to the opportunities ahead.

Maybe Jaywick is on an upwards curve?
I don't doubt it still has shady elements, but it's been given plenty of publicity over the years.
However, there needs to be a balance retaining locals and newcomers (aka investors) because if handled wrongly it could end being a new hipster city!!

A very interesting point - Margate springs to mind as an example too.

I visited Margate 10 years ago. I'm from South Wales...I thought it was ripe for investment. Same feel about Jaywick

Well it's no worse than St Neots ! Come and see a town with cars and potholes everywhere, no parking facilities but plenty of charity shops. The high street is full of boarded up shops but of course plenty of hair dressers, cash must be king ?
