Superman II Donner/Lester Combo Ending

  • I just watched Superman 2 the Richard Donner Cut and I must say it was pretty impressive. I liked that ending better except that he **SPOILER** used the spin the world trick again. Which has me thinking how many times has Superman made a mistake and just rewinded the world and had a do over. Anyway I kept the Superman magical kiss because of the great dialogue between Clark and Lois and had him respin the world because in the Silver Age of DC Comics Clark and Lois would've never kissed, just Superman and Lois...plus isn't he vulnerable to magic? How is he able to have the power of amnesia. Anyway I hope enjoy the combined ending. Though I have to say both this ending Donner's ending kill the plot behind Superman Returns...oh well that's why there's a reboot.

      When I watched the movie as shown (with the amnesia kiss) my thought was, "I would think she would want to remember." They played it as her having a real broken heart - but we all knew the reason the relationship couldn't continue was that, if he had to give up his powers (and by the way, they don't really explain why he had to), then the world would be in danger. It wasn't like he found someone else! If she could remember, she would at least know Superman would choose her to be with if he could be with someone! And I don't get why she thought she could never fly with him again. They just couldn't, well, you know...

      And he went in with a clowns nose on and did a comedy routine just to make his friend know that if he could still laugh then life could go on. Interesting fact, Christopher was beginning to regain some movement and sensations. He was so hellbent. I swear that if he hadn't of become ill he might of pushed his way to having more and more movement even walking with assistance. In in willpower to overcome, he really was a Superman.

      This is almost certainly not true. Reeve's autobiography specifically discusses his arguments with his insurer over coverage of his medical bills, and nowhere does he indicate that Robin Williams or anyone else covered all of his medical bills (and if anyone had, it would have rendered the arguments with his health insurer moot and there'd be no point in writing about them in the first place. He does mention that Williams visited him shortly after the accident and gave him some hope by making him laugh, but there's nothing about Williams paying his medical bills.

Lester reshot some scenes which included adding new and deleted some. I think the balcony at least stay in intact, it’s probably the best scene of the entire movie.

      The biggest source of angst for Superman imo is that he wishes he could be everywhere all the time, but he just can’t. He may be a Super man, but he’s still only a man and can only be in one place at a time and has personal needs too. Every night when Superman goes home and puts his head to the pillow is a moment like the end of Schindler’s List. “I could have done more!” We’re not really seen that in such detail but if you want to really explore the tragic side of having Superman’s powers, that’s it. It’s certainly not “I don’t owe this world anything!”

In the Superman mythology, it’s often his Ma Kent who plants the idea in his head to use his powers to help others. That was the case in the origin in Superman #1, the first version of the origin to show more of the Kents. To take that character and turn her into literally the opposite is to have a Superman whose motivations are CONFUSED… Not complicated, confused. I think it was implied he had to give up his powers to have an intimate relationship with her (although they don't say why) and the world needed him to use his powers. But in the 90s TV series, Lois Lane and Clark Kent start a relationship (after she has learned to love Clark as a person and then learns the secret) and their coworkers and other acquaintances see two reporter co-workers falling in love and getting married. Lois is "officially" Clark's wife. The premise there was, Superman is Clark in the disguise, not the other way around.

      Definately!I've never loved Superman as much as I do when I get to see any of parts of what we're the best and that we're these beautiful and most magical scenes from my childhood favourite superhero films, which growing up in the eighties we're of the one and only sadly now late Christopher Reeves as the ultimate Superman. Alongside him, also my favourite and best and only Lois Lane, played by also very sad death of Margot Kidder.They oozed SO much chemistry and we're my absolute favourite back then, and still are now, in 2024. I did notice Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) had a lesser and lesser role unfortunately in the Superman sequels, and noticed that as a child, and had been saddened, not seeing as much of her.But I read as an adult, that she'd had something very serious happen, that had tragically realky affected her health. I think I read only last year, that she'd committed suicide, and that she'd had mental illness bless her.To me, she'll always be my favourite Lois Lane.Margot was born to play Lois, and if I'd had children, I'd have shown them Superman, from a young age and hopefully keep both Christopher Reeves' name alive, as the only and best Superman that graced the earth and to hopefully keep his memory alive.I remember clearly seeing the fourth installment at the cinema, back where I'm from with one of my brothers.I think Margot Kidder only had a few scenes in it and superman's enemy, had been some sun man or something. I enjoyed Richard Pryers part in the 3rd Superman and I think the sequels, could have been better especially come the fourth one.I can't help but wonder, if Margot Kidder hadn't been unwell bless her, maybe the sequels might've had a much better chance of surviving.Without her in them as much, they just weren't for me personally; the same.I'm so thankful, that I grew up in the 80's, they were the best times for epic movies ever!!!

    i hold SM2 VERY dear as it was with my mom when I was 9 we went to see it on opening day 33 years ago (she let me ditch school to take me :) IMO the chosen theatrical ending was superior, it sums up the story perfectly! this "new" ending creates all sorts of logic/plot holes i.e. why doesn't superman just spin the earth back to BEGIN with? sometimes studio heads know what they are doing...SOMETIMES ;) Apocalypse Now "Re-Dux" is an example where the deleted footage adding NOTHING to the film.

    doing time travel once was ok since I thought it was him pushed extreme by her death but having him have a reset button is way too powerful and kinda lame, He can redo anything it becomes a video game with respawns and if he ever dies supergirl could simply turn back time undoing his death. Its too godly to not make it a one time use!

When filming superman ii, richard donner was fired for financial reasons and richard lester was hired to finish the film but i thibnk h re shot sum seens asn then then the film was released, thats the 1 im sure uve always seen. and then in 2006 richard donner went bak to the studio and grabbed all the old superman II film & footage he filmed and put it together and re edited it and it was released on blu ray. both hav different endings

    Is it just me or does Margot Kidder look much younger in the first three minutes of this video? It has me thinking that this director's cut was meant for the first film, not the second. And isn't it great that Lois Lane finally figures it out about Clark Kent? She's no dummy after all, except that that part was left on the cutting room floor.

      It turns out that there were two directors. Some of Margot Kidders scenes for Superman II were filmed in 1977 by Richard Donner. Other scenes were filmed by Richard Lester in 1979. Also in ‘79 Margot was depressed by a divorce she was going through during filming. She admitted to phoning in her reshot material because she was emotionally distraught at the time.

    Honest to God I hoped Superman and Lois would tie the knot in this, but they didn't. I have the Richard Donner version of Superman 2 and it was the best. Screw Richard Lester, even though his only 2 masterpieces were 2 of the Beatles' movies; having Donner fired was one of the worst things to happen in this series.

    Quel dommage que pour des bagarres stupides Richard Donner n'ai pu mener à bien les 3 trilogies. Cela aurait été grandiose car il faut avouer que les suivants n'ont pas été à la hauteur. Je suis très émue de revoir certaines scènes malheureusement coupées. Christopher Reeve et Margot Kidder incarnaient à la perfection ces deux personnages. Ils me manquent beaucoup 🙏

    It's strange, I came across this scene after not seeing it in many years. I didn't get it as a kid, but at age 38/39, it really hurts when she says that. Isn't that all that really matters? "Just tell me you love me." I have tears in my eyes seeing this now. Thanks for uploading it.

    • @hallieharker6893
      @hallieharker6893 Před 10 lety +2

      Me, too! As a kid, I don't think I could've grasped just how much it HURTS to love somebody and not to have them love you in return. I mean, it's not like she didn't love him or that he didn't love her. They both loved each other, but it wasn't going to work that way. I mean, think of it: If Superman is immortal, or pretty close to it, that means he'd outlive Lois by a long shot, and all of his friends and loved ones. That's s one reason why it wouldn't work between them. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't wanna live forever and see all my friends and loved ones die and not be able to go be with them. When she said that, gut wrenched, because I know what it is to love someone who didn't return my love and I know what it is to feel uncertain about someone's love even when they really DO love you. I've been in both situations before. It HURTS BAD!!! My heart was breaking for them both, but especially for him because, while he erased Lois' memories so she wouldn't suffer anymore, HE still had to live with the memories and the unrequited love and desires. :..(

    I like this combo, but there's one issue I can't stop thinking about concerning the 'spin the world backward' thing. Wouldn't Zod and his gang, flying to Earth from the moon, have seen Kal-El and wondered, "Who is this guy with powers like ours, and why is he circling the globe so quickly?" Just a thought...

    You could have just splashed the FOS scene into the next day with the Kiss them went to the Diner and had the flag scene at the end which is still to this date one of the greatest end scene of any movie that Lester actually got right with Superman carrying the American Flag back to the White House.

  • @DarekBirton
    @DarekBirton Před 11 měsíci +1

    Only to give up power to Learn he can not for the sake of being ordinary and not being able to do anything great. Never give up power for a woman. Never tell a woman your secret because you either have to make her forget or regret telling her. In his case, just undo it and only you know what happened. Superman can live in the future. The past, or the present. He can be everywhere and no one would know.
