  • The 1988 season was a battle of the young guns. It began with the ultimate father-son clash, as the Allisons went 1-2 in the Daytona 500, with Bobby winning his final race. The great underdog Alan Kulwicki also won his first victory in the inaugural race at Phoenix. Ultimately, the championship came down to a fight between Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace, with Awesome Bill from Dawsonville prevailing. I hope you enjoy the video, and remember to like, comment, and subscribe!

The first word that came to mind when I started watching this video was "comfort food"... That was my era, and when NASCAR still made sense.

Prior to Chase Elliott in 2020, was this the last time a driver won both the title and most popular driver award in the same year

I'm reminded of how the last time a driver who wasn't an Elliott or an Earnhardt won the most popular driver award it was 1990. And the last time a driver who wasn't an Elliott, Earnhardt or Waltrip did it was 1983.

Somehow, I forgot the Aussie announcers. I thought I read somewhere the Winston Cup was covered in Australia in 1988, and there was a US broadcast of the Calder Park race too, I remember Chris Economaki on it discussing how they got the cars and teams and tires thereorgot
edit: Or for that matter, Keith Jackson calling auto races, somehow that just slipped my mind, it's like hearing Jack Arute being a sideline/dugout reporter in the 90s for the NFL/NCAA/MLB
