  • In February of 1999, almost two full months ahead of the album’s original March 30th release date, 13 unreleased tracks from Nas’s forthcoming release were leaked online, which prompted him to push the album back and reconfigure the tracklisting. I Am...became one of the first major-label releases to be widely leaked using MP3 technology.

The industry is dirty because they knew what a historical timeline his album drops what have been, they tried to tarnish his destiny but you can't stop greatness because one way or another he still prevailed. From his first album cover to God son, he went from a boy to a man to a king then from a king to a prophet on his journey as a artist and knowing the walks through life on stillmatic where he is wearing all of his jewelry and loud clothes showing how materialistic the world has become and needs cleansing so on God Son cover he shows himself washed away of all of his materialism and sins thus saying "GOD SON" his "stillmatic freestyle" tells it all.

I feel like he is one of the biggest "what if's" in rap history. • @cloutcancun
      @cloutcancun  Před 3 lety +6

Yes and if anybody doesn't see it that way they're not seeing the full picture. I feel like when "I am" leaked it changed rap history forever because think of it like this. If Nas goes 3 for 3 with albums with the final one being a successful double album as a solo artist he would have had the crown without a doubt. Who else did something like that while alive at that time especially in NY? People had classics but who had 3 in a row especially starting with their debut album? I think one of the biggest things from this is that if Nas successfully did this then I don't think Jay-Z would've had the guts to go at Nas because Nas would have been the undisputed king. We would have probably never had ether, takeover, the actual beef, etc. If "I am" leaked we also probably wouldn't have the lost tapes, no nastramaus or stillmatic, and maybe not even streets disciple because that was a double-disc too and maybe Nas wouldn't have to do it since he already did it before

He should also get Large Professor, Dj Premier, and Pete Rock to do the beats too. Maybe one or two more producers but those 3 for sure.

“Wanna Play Rough” was a track the produced by Harlem producer frequent collaborator of the late DMX (Dame Grease ) for his album “Live On Lennox” off “Vacant Lot” records. I think he was very influential to Swizz Beatz as well but on that same album “Live On Lennox” there is a track called “I’m that Nigga” by “Meeno” (the guy in the Mase’s video from the late 90’s group “Harlem World” where he’s shot out the cannon the whole track is directed and a diss record to..... (JAY-Z). Jay’s response to that song was on Memphis Bleek’s 2nd album “The Understanding” “Mind Right (REMIX) Jay-Z’s verse “You think they was shooting you fat-ass outta cannons before” wooo Jay-Z was on fire on that one but yeah I think Jay-Z around that time had a thing against dudes from Harlem around that time but who knows. I had the full bootleg on cassette
    It was five mics honestly
When the leak happened I believe Steve Stout got in Nas ear and advised him to change the album. It didn’t work and what we got was a shell of what it was originally.
That was when Nas lost his edge in the rap game
He comprised his artistic integrity for 💵 due to bad advice from a meat head and that made him a meat head in my eyes too 🤦🏾‍♂️
Nas still is one of the goats
He released plenty more heat in spurts but never had the focus and drive like he had in the 90s again
Respect due to him for him staying on his paper grind but he gave up the ghost creatively and fumbled a classic album.

I listened to I Am not too long ago for a second time (was kinda tired my first time and almost fell asleep towards the end). I still unfortunately can’t see that album as a classic like I do his first 2. It was so close, but songs like I Want To Talk To You, Money Is My B, and others sadly ruined it’s chance. I feel like Nas would’ve been better off having used at least a small handful of the leaked tracks, since we know he still ended up using Small World and We Will Survive. I don’t know, we can’t change how the process unfortunately went. Nas dropped an album that was 2 steps away from being a classic, only to drop a bad album months later that just so happened to have the masterpiece that is Project Windows. Luckily, Nas came back even better years later and we can be proud to say we see him as one of the best to ever do it despite that rough era.

Here’s my link to the original “I Am” (double disc version).
Years ago, I searched for the original tracklist, and came across a 30-song tracklist. I then went & searched for each song and created a playlist, in the order according to the tracklist I found.
Give it a listen. If this is how Nas intended the album to sound like. I promise you, it’s a certified classic masterpiece. 💯🤦🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There’s no “commercial” type of songs on it. Just all top tier, God-mode shit.
Most of us already heard the songs, but the order they go in makes you look at everything in Hiphop in a different light. I think it would’ve cemented Nas as, The GOAT, back in 1999, real talk.
The double disc version has a real divine, Godly feel. To me, it definitely would’ve separated Nas from everyone else, A LONG TIME AGO! It’s that good.
The transition from the end of disc 1 & the opening of disc 2 (The Afterlife (intro) & Amongst Kings) is pure genius. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
In my opinion, the original double disc version of, I Am: The Autobiography, after one listen, was the greatest Hiphop album that I ever heard, period.
