- In February of 1999, almost two full months ahead of the album’s original March 30th release date, 13 unreleased tracks from Nas’s forthcoming release were leaked online, which prompted him to push the album back and reconfigure the tracklisting. I Am...became one of the first major-label releases to be widely leaked using MP3 technology.

What is the next "What if...." video I should do?
What if The D.O.C. never injured his vocals
What if Rza's basement never flooded losing hundreds of beats. Would the 1995 Inspectah Deck album been a classic?
@@adrielgreen6746 I've mentioned this I think maybe 2 or 3 times on my channel. I think in the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx video and the Liquid Swords video I've done. I can definitely see myself doing something about it in the future. Deck was supposed to be one of the first to come out with a solo album in the wu-tang. Imagine if Deck had a solo album in 1995 instead of 1999. Crazy
@@cloutcancun I'll have to check those videos out bro. I'm a new subscriber and your videos are A-1. The Rocafella documentary was 🔥🔥🔥And Deck is actually my favorite Wu member. I think more light should be shed on this misfortune that flood caused for him. Definitely hurt him the most of all the members.
What if Blueprint didn’t drop on 9/11.
If *I Am* came out as intended, Nas would've had 3 straight classics out the gate!
The original "I Am" that was supposed to be a double album would've been Nas greatest album ever.
Nas’ first 4 albums are classics
I Am is a classic for me 🤷🏾♂️
Nas got like 6 classics imo (Illmatic, It was written, I Am, Stillmatic, God’s Son, Lost Tapes 1)
@@kapellavision5592 Naw not Nastradamus. That album was bad for Nas standards. Project Windows is one of my favorite Nas songs tho
If it happened like that illmatic would be a legendary album but the magnum opus would be that double lp

Big Facts. Not a single skippable track
That's a fact that could if been a album I thought I was the only one to think that
Had some lost gems from “I Am”
@@TheRealLeonardWashington the beat for everybody's crazy was meh but the bars was 11/10. Shots at Jay and the ROC on that track.
The lost tapes would still exist. Reason being, Nas has many unreleased songs that still haven’t seen the light of day.
To me Nas has 4 undeniable classics. Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic, and God’s Son. I love how God’s Son is a very personal album.

Life is good
God’s Son is one of my favorites
The industry is dirty because they knew what a historical timeline his album drops what have been, they tried to tarnish his destiny but you can't stop greatness because one way or another he still prevailed. From his first album cover to God son, he went from a boy to a man to a king then from a king to a prophet on his journey as a artist and knowing the walks through life on stillmatic where he is wearing all of his jewelry and loud clothes showing how materialistic the world has become and needs cleansing so on God Son cover he shows himself washed away of all of his materialism and sins thus saying "GOD SON" his "stillmatic freestyle" tells it all.
Huh? You mean Jayz right? Cause from my understanding if you wasn't Roc and was in NY then he did everything in his power to trample over you.
You are young genius I am sitting here with a reminder at 3 I will be watching. Nas is my favorite all-time artist💯💯
Nas gets a lot of love I will admit but I think he needs a lot more. Nas really changed rap forever and that's no debate. After Illmatic, it was never the same. I feel like he is one of the biggest "what if's" in rap history. Nas is undoubtedly one of the GOAT's already but if the OG "I am...." didn't leak and it went on to be a classic double-disc album Nas would have been out of this world.
To me, Nas has 5 classic albums. Illmatic, It was Written, Stillmatic, God's Son, and King's Disease are all classics.
For me it’s those plus Distant relatives, KD2, MAGIC, life is good, and street’s disciple the rest are great !!
Distant Relatives is a classic to me

I agree.
Updated list. Illmatic, iww, lost tapes, stillmatic, kd2, kd3, magic are classics. Life is good and God's son are phenomenal. Let's be honest, Nas really deserves every credit given to him. I don't think anyone has as many classic albums.
This album is an undisputed classic
My opinion it was a descent album. When I was in high school nas is like was my shit
Preemo man
I agree and Nas Is Like is one of my faves of all time too.
IT WAS WRITTEN was his dopest album ..
That’s when he was at his best
I agree
Can't argue that. I always tell people that I think IT WAS WRITTEN was the best rap album to drop in the loaded year of 96. And 96 had alot classics like atliens, Reasonable doubt, the score, all eyes on me & Makaveli
TAKE IT IN BLOOD is honestly in my opinion the rawest hip hop song ever made he covered all bases various topics in that song the beat was super ill with the sample and Nas spazzed all through it and he shouted out Houston fifth Ward at the end and everybody knows Scarface and him are tight goes to show you how far back they were
@@aliaswizard6963 what your fav bar on take it in blood
Classic album and Dmx murdered his verse. I just listened to this yesterday. No skips needed. Thanks nas
If Nas double album was released & was a commerical success, he would be KoNY without dispute. Damn, it's something to wonder about, even debate about IMO
Yes and if anybody doesn't see it that way they're not seeing the full picture. I feel like when "I am" leaked it changed rap history forever because think of it like this. If Nas goes 3 for 3 with albums with the final one being a successful double album as a solo artist he would have had the crown without a doubt. Who else did something like that while alive at that time especially in NY? People had classics but who had 3 in a row especially starting with their debut album? I think one of the biggest things from this is that if Nas successfully did this then I don't think Jay-Z would've had the guts to go at Nas because Nas would have been the undisputed king. We would have probably never had ether, takeover, the actual beef, etc. If "I am" leaked we also probably wouldn't have the lost tapes, no nastramaus or stillmatic, and maybe not even streets disciple because that was a double-disc too and maybe Nas wouldn't have to do it since he already did it before
@@cloutcancun Idk...u can argue redman and ice cube had 3 classics in a row...as far as ny...i would say rakim...but it's something u really gotta think hard about....
@@jay07261986 If you really think about hard you can start listing off people but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. I was saying who else released 3 classics albums in a row with one of the three being a double-disc album while alive. To my knowledge no one had done that at that time and that would of been crazy if Nas did that
@@cloutcancun yeah that's true...double albums are hard to execute as is...as much respect as I have for all eyes on me n life after death...i prefer me against the world n ready to die...nas need to go head n rerelease I am as it was intended to be...lol...
@@jay07261986 Nah because the idea was never completed and 12 out of the 13 songs that have leaked have been repurposed. In my opinion, Nas should redo everything....keep the concept and make a 12 track album (one disc) with 6 songs about the birth to death by suicide idea and 6 being about the afterlife idea. He should also get Large Professor, Dj Premier, and Pete Rock to do the beats too. Maybe one or two more producers but those 3 for sure.
Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic and King's Disease....The Lost Tapes is a classic compilation
God's Son and Life Is Good are near classics ...
Life is good is a straight classic

I remember getting a press copy of the original double album. A few of those lost tape records were on there and obviously some of the records on I am that were recorded last second were not. He is the greatest MC of all time regardless especially after this last year and a half run, as a matter of fact this last decade. When you lay his discography out it becomes apparent nobody has as many incredible albums as him.

“Wanna Play Rough” was a track the produced by Harlem producer frequent collaborator of the late DMX (Dame Grease ) for his album “Live On Lennox” off “Vacant Lot” records. I think he was very influential to Swizz Beatz as well but on that same album “Live On Lennox” there is a track called “I’m that Nigga” by “Meeno” (the guy in the Mase’s video from the late 90’s group “Harlem World” where he’s shot out the cannon the whole track is directed and a diss record to..... (JAY-Z). Jay’s response to that song was on Memphis Bleek’s 2nd album “The Understanding” “Mind Right (REMIX) Jay-Z’s verse “You think they was shooting you fat-ass outta cannons before” wooo Jay-Z was on fire on that one but yeah I think Jay-Z around that time had a thing against dudes from Harlem around that time but who knows. That “Live on Lennox” album was produced entirely by “Dame Grease” I think the production was “SUPER TIGHT” give it a listen if you have a chance
Now that u say that, I can definitely hear X on that beat
I was a big Grease fan because of DMX first album.. so much so I bought the Live on Lennox album.. i was disappointed.. I get it.. he was trying to get harlem rappers shine but they messed up his ok beats on that album.
Wanna Play Rough wasn’t originally intended for Dame Grease’s album, it ended up on the album after Nas decided not to include it on I Am. That Live On Lennox album is tough tho, Dame Grease is unheralded.
@@satishrobertson8771 tough? agree to disagree..Hot Ones? Bigga or whatever that guy's name was.. if you bought the CD, in the pamphlet it talked about all the rappers featured..they all sucked. Wish Grease would have used more established rappers for his beats.
@@TheThiefery it was tough to me on the strength of the beats. Similar to how I felt about Group Home’s first album. It would’ve been classic if he got better rappers.

Nas said Nipsey wanted to do a documentary on the original double album.
Nas should do it. He could make so much $$
This was during the Napster days. Finding those songs was like gold mining. There are a bunch of albums that never came out, such as the Clipse unreleased first album, Kobe Bryants, Allen Iverson's. There were a ton of lost tracks that were circulating during those days.
I Am is my all-time favorite Nas album.
Idk why it’s so hated on, it’s top 2 for me
Seeing all them album covers, makes me realize, Nas been with me since I started listing to rap.

That leaked album was fire. The album that came out was cool but it wasnt better than the original leak. I was in HS when that came out and i had that bootleg. The song fetus was beautiful.
And how about the introspective DRUNK BY MYSELF?
yep and he changed it up when it was released on his Lost tapes
For me his classics are Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic, KD, KD2, Magic, and KD3. I love how KD was the start of making Nas sound like the Nas we knew back in the day.
I love that song Dr K(I luv I Am). I heard MC Eiht rushed his Last Man Standing album just to get off his label. Keyshia Cole Point of No Return album was rushed just to get off her label. I still loved all those albums
Wow bro for you to be born 3 years after 1999 you’re really on point with your timelines! Even the archive footage is accurate! This video brought back so much nostalgia and confirms what I’ve been telling people for years! Great work 13:02
If I Am woulda came out on time, then we wouldn’t have had the joint with Scarface and the joint with DMX, I think the I AM was still a masterpiece

I remember I am with being advertised as a double album up to a week before it's release. I went to circuit City and found out it was one disc and almost a dozen songs were cut (worst enemy, amongst Kings, Sinful Living being my favorites). I was mad. That day I went right to the corner of my street next to the subway stop where dude used to sell DVDs, mixtapes. I bought the I Am The Autobiography Bootleg. That is the real I Am to me. When the leak happened I believe Steve Stout got in Nas ear and advised him to change the album. It didn’t work and what we got was a shell of what it was originally.
That was when Nas lost his edge in the rap game
He comprised his artistic integrity for 💵 due to bad advice from a meat head and that made him a meat head in my eyes too 🤦🏾♂️
Nas still is one of the goats
He released plenty more heat in spurts but never had the focus and drive like he had in the 90s again
Respect due to him for him staying on his paper grind but he gave up the ghost creatively and fumbled a classic album.
I blame Steve meat head Stout for Nas decline 👎🖕that guy 🙅🏾♂️

They only made 4700 copies of it. I have two of them. One I play and one I kept unopened. It was released on record store Friday on Black Friday. Look it up.
If this album came out and they added my favorite track I wanna talk to you on the tracklist. This album would have been the greatest solo rap album in 99 and eclisping it was written, stillmatic. Also being toe to toe with illmatic.
Wanna play ruff. Was one of my favorite joints. And some times I wonder
They gotta remaster the album and put what Nas intended for his life and death concept
Still have the leaked cd in my collection. Def changed the trajectory of Nas’s career. He was sounding like an average rapper going after mainstream sound for the bag. You would be surprised how many people didn't realize that It Was Written and I Am were number 1 on the Billboard charts for weeks. I was shocked. You are the only one that mentioned that. Nobody i seen on CZcams does it. And Nas has six classics to me Unfortunately The Lost Taoes has to be counted due ti it being structured as a album. Life is Good is inching towards that status
I still feel we wudda gotten a mixed review 4th album. Hate Me Now & You Owe Me are some of his biggest songs.
I listened to I Am not too long ago for a second time (was kinda tired my first time and almost fell asleep towards the end). I still unfortunately can’t see that album as a classic like I do his first 2. It was so close, but songs like I Want To Talk To You, Money Is My B, and others sadly ruined it’s chance. I feel like Nas would’ve been better off having used at least a small handful of the leaked tracks, since we know he still ended up using Small World and We Will Survive. I don’t know, we can’t change how the process unfortunately went. Nas dropped an album that was 2 steps away from being a classic, only to drop a bad album months later that just so happened to have the masterpiece that is Project Windows. Luckily, Nas came back even better years later and we can be proud to say we see him as one of the best to ever do it despite that rough era.
Yea nas should’ve cut you won’t see me tonight, dr knockboot, kissing, money is my b, & big things. I want to talk to you was dope lol it fit the album
@@Agentunderfire I agree with Dr Knockboot and Kissing, but You Won’t See Me Tonight was a dope song. The beat was fire and Nas did his thing with the verses. That song for me at least fit the album better than I Want To Talk To You ever will. Also, I kinda like Big Things. It has noticeably the worst audio and mixing on the whole album, but it’s a fun song to me. He goes intentionally faster than usual and the beats not awful. But yeah, that’s about it for me
I Am... is a classic Nas album. One of my favorite albums to listen to PERIOD. I never liked It Was Written as much as most people do though... most of it felt like it was meant to be radio hits. 'The Message' and 'I Gave You Power' are absolute classics though.

Here’s my link to the original “I Am” (double disc version).
Years ago, I searched for the original tracklist, and came across a 30-song tracklist. I then went & searched for each song and created a playlist, in the order according to the tracklist I found.
Give it a listen. If this is how Nas intended the album to sound like. I promise you, it’s a certified classic masterpiece. 💯🤦🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There’s no “commercial” type of songs on it. Just all top tier, God-mode shit.
Most of us already heard the songs, but the order they go in makes you look at everything in Hiphop in a different light. I think it would’ve cemented Nas as, The GOAT, back in 1999, real talk.
The double disc version has a real divine, Godly feel. To me, it definitely would’ve separated Nas from everyone else, A LONG TIME AGO! It’s that good.
The transition from the end of disc 1 & the opening of disc 2 (The Afterlife (intro) & Amongst Kings) is pure genius. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
In my opinion, the original double disc version of, I Am: The Autobiography, after one listen, was the greatest Hiphop album that I ever heard, period.
