This might show a big difference between American distributors and European ones because from what I read the major distributors in Europe were quick to the pick it up. No doubt the Americans see it as some over price art house film from a director that isn't a safe bet like Nolan or some other directors.
Are you from Europe by any chance?
@@dougsmith4602 Nope good old America
European market seems to be more forgiving for an art piece movie
I think the European distributors may have calculated wrong on this one, because the European reviews are pretty scathing.
Film culture is much stronger and healthier in Europe
When the distributors said it's not a good movie, they probably meant it's not a mainstream movie
yes
it's not easily marketable
The fact that "One From The Heart" was an absolute commercial disaster (less than $1 million grossed on a $26m budget in 1981) is probably a big red flag for a lot of American studios. These sort of passion projects just never seem to be all that profitable (unless the directors name is James Cameron, whose just weird that way).
I agree. I am glad to see that One From the Heart got a 4K release
The same folks that released Madame Webb are going to be the judges and arbiters of what is good or not? Haha
Even if it's bad this movie feels like it will be an experience and one I actually want to see.
Distributers say it's not good... Is that really the reason or the movie is just not what they expect by current standards?? I'm not Coppola's biggest fan but we're talking about the guy who made the trilogy that, for some, it's best in cinema history. Or maybe it's actually really good BUT it's not the kind of movie that make audiences going in packs repeatedly
That’s absolutely 100% it. The industry is all about tent poles and marketing. If it isn’t high concept easily digestible fodder they won’t bite.
Paramount oughta distribute it
I don’t know if it’s good or bad and frankly I don’t really care. What I do know is that I’ll be at theatre the minute I get the opportunity to. I have to see this on the big screen.
This is what happens when your distributors are Stock Options.
I remember with Blade Runner 2049 it was distributed by Warner Brothers in America, but by Sony in the United Kingdom and I’ve never understood why.
I don’t care I’m fucking excited. That trailer is incredible.
I’d imagine IMAX is far easier for Coppola to get than traditional theaters. Especially considering there’s about only 1,700 IMAX theaters in the world. As opposed to over 5,000 traditional theaters in the US alone.
why dont Coppola get Amc and Regal distribute his film?
It's deemed really bad it got 30 on rotten tomatoes and got boos
Let's just say that some early critics tried to get ahead of the hype train and lauded it to the heavens and back, but the ones that took their time and actually thought about it are pretty much massacring it.
AMC and Regal are probably a bit apprehensive about it.
Just for context on why this film might be a tough sell, apparently there’s a scene where a real life person walks into the theater and has a conversation with Adam Driver’s character from inside the theater.
No, I’m not fucking joking.
So what they are gonna have to hire people at each screening to go up in the middle a talk LOL 😂😂😂
@@AMIN_mashI guess. If the studio were to have to pay for that, I can see why they wouldn’t want the film.
I think that mightve only been for cannes
That’s like when the director of The Truman Show tried to get cameras installed in every cinema so it would cut to the audience watching the movie during the climax
@mrcritical6751 that would've been awesome tbh, one of my favorite movies of all time
I’ll be watching this in imax for sure 👍🏽
Coppola: Calls Marvel movies despicable.
Also Coppola: Releases Megalopolis.
Critics: "Shit, do we call this brilliant or unbelievably fucking bad?"
Marvel movies are not just despicable; they are, in fact, harmful.
@@bozoc2572 relax edgelord. People enjoy Them alot, and taste is subjective. No need to try to look cool by saying crap like that. You look the opposite. (The marvels was horrible though)
“It bothers me, especially from heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space,” Hemsworth said. “Those guys had films that didn’t work too - we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?”
“Cinema-going did not change because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media,” he said. “Superhero films actually kept people in the cinemas during that transition and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation.” (Chris Hemsworth, in a reaction to Scorsese's and Coppola's criticism)

You are a perfect example of what consumerism does to people. Enjoy your fluff, this movie is about you.
@@bozoc2572it annoys that the blame is not directed at the companies and their greedy and harmful practices that forge a monopoly but instead go towards Marvel so instead the conversation goes to "do you like Marvel movies or not" .Instead or criticising a thing most are willing to critic they critic the most popular franchise in the world, I don't think that's how you get people to your side.
Normies hate it. Sounds like kino is back on the menu.
Absolutely, this movie is going to be sick.
When I first read the title I thought John was talking about Metalocalypse.
THis movie reminds me of the Brazil film in 1985. A science-fiction dystopian black comedy film.
That has a cynical/nihilistic vibe, Megalopolis has a hopeful feeling to it apparently.
I'll watch it
Looks far better than anything Marvel
Sure thing there sparky
@@lordrayden3045 It really does though. It won't be for everyone, but at least there's some passion behind it. As opposed to a committee.
That’s for sure 😂
Anything Phase 4 lol
I see it as a mirror to "A Thin Red Line" decades ago.
An immense cast in a movie from a celebrated filmmaker, who hadn't done anything creatively in decades since forever? And of course his peers probably are glad to see something by F.F. Coppola that doesn't involve his kids (looking at you Sofia) and trying to do something different than her writing a 18-page script and getting an Academy Award win for being a nepo baby.
Nothing against Sofia Coppola. I adored "The Virgin Suicides" (1999), but I started covering movies around that time, and even back then there were talks about "Megalopolis" as his next big project.
That was like 25 years ago (yes, I am getting old).
A prestige movie from Coppola vs the "Star Wars" hype back then? And I am not a fan of "Star Wars", but
So I guess that he over S. Coppola, Spike Jonze, Lucas, Spielberg, ILM, R. Copola etc to make it visually interesting.
My two cents is that there will be Special Screenings targeting the Boomer Generation, who might think that "I know that name".
As cynical as this might sound, it goes the same route as with Ridley Scott, who currently is churning out movies about mortality, legacy etc.
Sad, but they seem to go out with a good one.
Box Office? Ask anyone under 30 and they might - if they are into movies - answer "He directed 'Jack', with Robin Williams to build his own vineyard?"
Here's why I think this film could actually be good:
By his own admission, every film Coppola made between 1983-2011 (with some variance, obviously this is a generalization) was more or less a paycheck, so he could use their profits to make this film. He wrote it immediately after "Apocalypse Now," so in a way this is really more like his prolonged FIFTH film. The poor quality of those other films, to me, doesn't speak to a lack of ability _but a lack of passion_ (which he had for "The Godfather: Parts 1-2," "The Conversation," "Apocalypse Now," and obviously has for "Megalopolis").
As far as the bad reception by distributors, I don't think we give too much merit to the opinions of unimaginative suits not used to considering things outside of a box, especially when those same suits considered _LITERAL "STAR WARS"_ an unmarketable piece of crap guaranteed to bomb at the box office. So much so they had to be strong-armed into reluctantly promoting it back in the 1970s, rather than being able to quietly bury it so as to "not harm the public reputation of our studio" when it came out. When have corporate testers ever been right about the quality of a film that _isn't like something that already exists_ because it's something new?
Coppola directed another film bro. How the hell is he struggling to get a distributor.
Because sadly business people run the film business instead of creative artists
Because the vast majority of executives don't care in the slightest for art. All that matters to them is the green.
I only see Imax now
Dune 2 was crazy in IMAX
At least Coppols is making something new. Almost all releases are remakes. I hated Oppenheimer, did not even understood the hipe, the oscars... hated barbie. We did not need a "dune" remake... i would like to see new stories, not old ones with other faces.
New stories please.
Megalopolips?

Good = money-making milquetoast
Adam, i think it's time for you to go to A24, DC, or Marvel
they wasted your talent
and Jim Jarmusch movie is not that good either
Supergirl has a release date John
From what i just saw this is a disaster. I heard it got 30 percent on rotten and it got mixed boos and cheers from audience who saw it lol
I think it's more divisive than disastrous since almost all of the reviews I have seen are either 4/5 or 2/5 on rotten tomatoes. It is sitting at 50% right now.
You must dig deep into Coppola's mind. Some people are just lazy thinkers.
This movie will lose a lot of money at the BO
The reviews from Cannes are in, and ……..it looks grim
Oh it’s going to be wild and insane and people will hate it and it’s going to stick in your mind 100x more than any marvel, dc, Disney, Star Wars tripe
They said the same thing about Apocalypse
I am intrigued by this movie, but it looks like it’s gonna be a turd fest. There’s something about the trailer that just isn’t jiving with me.
