@@IvanezRus Fun fact: in one of the early Heart of the Swarm missions there's an easter egg. Sarah and Jim are supposed to escape the base that's raided by Mengsk's forces. At one point if you leave them idle for a bit she says "Really? All these years later and you're still a pig" or something to that extent.

Me too. Because I'm german and used to play the game on german (turned it to english since this often sounds better). One of the Valkyries german quote's "Natürlich mein Lieber" which translates to "Naturally/Of course my dear". Having these quotes in comparision like that, it seemed natural to me she says "Of course my dear"...

The Wraith's tone of voice is, itself, a reference to Chuck Yeager and his remarkably cool and collected way of talking, no matter the situation.
Not necessarily the man himself, of course; literally everyone in aviation has "improve my Chuck Yeager impression" as their second priority behind "don't die".
There are also references embedded in the names of characters themselves:
- Tom Kazansky (Wraith hero) is a character in the movie Top Gun
- Gui Montag (Firebat hero) is a reference to Guy Montag, the protagonist of Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451
- The protoss units and titles are not really "pop culture" references but rather historical references. "Archon" means "Ruler" in Greek, and was the title of a public official in Athens. "Praetor" was the title of a public Roman official. "Templar" is a rather obvious reference to the Knights Templar. "Dragoon" refers to a class of mounted infantry which was first employed in the British army in the 18th century; as a matter of fact, modern military regiments still use the name "Dragoon" (e.g. US 1st Cavalry Regiment).
Dragoons are infantry that arrive on horseback and then dismount before fighting.

Huh? Copying random references from all out of pop culture and using them as ingame assets makes them have a soul? They still do this constantly. In WoW every second quest is a reference to something. It's getting pretty stale tbh.

@@Lancor84 that's mean they still care about their game, put heart and time into it instead of pump it out as another cash grab project. That is the problem with most game nowaday. It's just a programming project that must be complete before deadline make by a bunch of impassionate developers that do it purely for money. That is like watcing Pele kick ball without the love he have for soccer.
The science vessel being voiced by Harry Shearer is one of those urban myths so common it somehow made it onto wikipedia, but it isn't actually true sadly. If you check the voice credits for SC1 and BW Harry Shearer is absent. It's most commonly attributed to Jason Hayes, though since SC1 didn't say who did what it's not 100% known for sure.
Sure. one thing, I doubt Blizz could afford him and second they usually aren't allowed to play characters outside of show recordings.

According to StarCraft Wiki it appears Tracy W. Bush did the voice of the Science Vessel. Or at least he claimed to in a Facebook conversation.

The Battlecruiser's spell Yamato Cannon is likely a reference to the anime Space Battleship Yamato (1974-75), where the titular ship fires a powerful blast that destroys everything in 1 hit (at least in the first season it does).
Or, ya know... The actual Yamato from WWII?

You missed the references to simpsons in the science vessels funny lines. "Fusion eh? I'll have to remember that." is referencing Mr. Burns' common line of forgetting Homers' name "Simpson eh?" as well as the infernal contraption one being a direct quote from one of the earlier episodes.
He also says “D’oh” like Homer.
I think the one about monkies also was from the Simpsons, but i'm not sure from who.
they where all simpsons from different seasons and a few was hhomer but mostly Burns.
Yeah. All of those lines he said were "just funny stuff" were all Simpsons references in one way or another.

the Terrans are actually a reference to Humanity!
Terran derives from the word Terra and suffix an. Terra being the latin word for Earth (or the goddess of earth) and the suffix an turning the word into a noun of belonging. therefore a Terra-an or Terran is a being from Terra. while exclusivly used by science fiction for human, it is not a fancy reference to humans, just a formation of a word similar to ROMAN (Rome + an).

The Ghost voice is a reference to Clint Eastwood and the line 'reap the whirlwind as well as the general look is a reference to general hummers line by the actor Ed Harris made in the movie and the look of the infiltration S.E.A.L.S that entered the prison through the shower

"I really have to go... number one." Is a reference to Picard's " I have to go! Number One, you have the con!" for whenever he heads down to a planet and leaves Riker in command on the ship.
It's both, but he failed to mention the double reference.
Edit: That is to say, he explained how it was a double reference prior, but then failed to mention that in addition to meaning he has to pee, it's also a play on telling his second in command to assume command of the bridge.

Also, while skits usually bring a video's quality down, it'd be cool if you did gimmicky intros like this one a little more often, this was pretty nice.
there's some custom Starcraft games (mostly the horror kind) that use the unused ghost noise. i'm wondering if they were trying to go for a horror RTS or something and just scrapped the sound at one point.
Toriel the motherly monster the original Starcraft does aim for a horror atmosphere. Have you seen the Terran vs Zerg cutscenes? That look was way better than whatever they have now.
Not sure where I got the notion from but I always thought the unused Ghost sound was intended to be used whenever a Ghost died from its own nuke calldown.

I ALWAYS wondered that about the Academy sound! I hear it now and then and I'm like "that's a weird place to put a starcraft reference..."
Fun fact, the voice actor for the Wraith is Glenn Stafford, longtime Blizzard composer who composed most music in the game, composed Warcraft 1/2 and worked on WoW and a ton of other games. He also voiced a lot of the sounds for the Zerg units.
Glad to see more references videos, they're nice short content and really show the fun Blizzard used to have when making games.

"Fusion, eh? I'll have to remember that." There was a Simpsons episode where Montgomery Burns says, "Solar, eh? I'll have to remember that." In context of the show he's worried about competitive energy sources to his nuclear plant. Since they got Harry Shearer, they'd want to pile on the Simpsons references. Of course, that explains the "D'oh".
I think the dropship line "can I take your order?" could be from war movie fire base Gloria a pilot asking R Lee what he needed.
Well here's something that's hidden in the game files.
There's unused sound effects for Terrain and Zerg building when they are unpowered, just like Protoss buildings when not next to a pylon, but Zerg and Terrain buildings can't be unpowered in the normal game!
I remember reading across many forums and how they wanted to have Zerg buildings attached to creep, and have what they do in sc2. Zerg move and attack faster on creep, slower without.
But due to time constraints and being unable to find suitable ways to balance creep buildings, producing lots of creep. But finding it near impossible. Due to testers focusing on creep colony's, effectively crippling and making zerg the weakest in the game.
So they scrapped that project until later.
I am more then likely wrong, maybe mis-remembering. Who knows.
I just remember reading this across a few forums years, years ago. When I was a teenager, in the infancy of the internet.

In the German version of StarCraft, Jim Raynor is voiced by the same actor (Kai Taschner) that also voices Mr Burns on The Simpsons (from season 25 onward). The same actor also voiced Saren Arterius (Mass Effect 1), Kif Kroker (Futurama) and Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty). They didn't put in any actor references in any of the dubs, as far as I know.

Very nice video. The Star Editor also have a cool bunch of nice references with the bonus heroes. For example the Goliath hero is named Alan Shezard, after a character from Vision of Escaflowne, and the Wraith hero is Tom Kanzansky from Top Gun. Both of those ended up being used in the hidden bonus campaign Enslaver.
About the Walkyrie being german this is the theme of the UED, to show that they're actually from Earth and not just space texans like the Terrans. They also have a French general, a Russian vice admiral, and Duran posed as a middle eastern man.

The civilian has that line because in the campaign there are a few missions where you can control them, such as the battlecruiser piloting mission.
