I will never understand people who own old homes don't take the time to use the right products to keep up the house. You are doing an amazing job of doing it the right way. Its obvious how much you love your home. So good to see Kim❤
One thing I've realized living in an old house is people don't even know that they don't know what they are doing. It's young bucks like Kaleb that have the wherewithal to use this amazing tool called the internet to learn about anything and everything.
@@paulgusztak4177 thank you for that reminder. There wasn't internet back in the day to research such things, and people did the best they knew how.
A lot of neighborhoods with older housing stock are low income. Not everyone has the means to do things the correct way. Thats why St. Louis city fell to the ground because people with time and money moved out to the suburbs in brand new homes that don’t require costly upkeep.
I have an old home and honestly, it's just not talked about, and you bring contractors in, and they just suggest using modern items. I have had to do research. Another issue is it can be incredibly expensive and in my area we are poor or lower class. It can be hard as well with disabilities and other mental health issues to upkeep. Again, this is primarily in my older neighborhood of where we live. We are fixing up our home slowly but we have to use more modern items with antique feel.
You don't know what you don't know, and up until recently with the internet and being able to look things up, you had to rely on whatever handy man or self-proclaimed expert showed up to fix a problem.
Yes to the quail tap, the house is moving along nicely. Don’t be hard on yourself, you’re only 1 man doing the job of many.
One thing about a project like this house, is that there is always something to do if you can't go with plan A.
Nice to see Kim again. She looks like she's enjoying her vacation. Great job with the walls. They look a lot better. So glad you're feeling better. Love the tap.
Once the exterior foundation is cleared of concrete I'd suggest coating it in a lime render to protect the pointing and stonework. The interior walls should be lime washed. It'll brghten the room and protect the pointing while remaining breathable. The extra benefit of rendering and lime washing is that it fills in small air gaps.
I have an 1894 Victorian which I have lived in my whole life. 63 years. I have restored it to its original condition. I was blessed that my folks and grandparents never altered it or ripped any of its original assets out. They just painted all the interior oak woodwork which I painstaking stripped. I am almost done with the exterior which I stripped all the paint off. Repaired and replaced lost ornamental woodwork. Of course I will have to repaint the first side I did and so on. You have bought back many memories although I did not have to deal with fixtures ripped out or the deterioration you have. You are saving a piece of architectural art for the world to enjoy. Thank you.
I’m glad that Kim had a chance to visit the Vulcan Statue in BHam. We live just outside of Birmingham and watch your videos every week. The Vulcan statue is where I proposed to my wife!
Howdy to my Birmingham neighbor. I've lived in Birmingham for about 9 years now. 👋
One time I took a brass tap in the shape of a frog to Belgium, the UK Customs officer ran my bag through her X-ray machine, she asked me what it was, I said what does it look like? (She wouldn't let me look at her screen), she said it looks like a tap in the shape of a frog, I said, yup, that's what it is!
I love that tap with the bird. You are doing great work and I can't wait to see the house after a few months of warm weather. We really need to save these historic houses,. These older well built houses will outlast the newer ones.
I don't know why but watching the walls being done is so satisfying. Can't wait for the next stretches, giving the beautiful future home a proper and adequate foundation ^^
I had a stone feature wall added to the back of my house outside my back door, and now, 4 years later, the "stone bricks" are starting to drop to the ground. So I wondered how he glued his rock pieces on. I guess Type 0 Mortar was what he used.
To Kim: have fun!
To Kaleb: yes to quail tap
To Sandy: meow purrr meow purrr
Only problem with the quail tap is to remember to winterize it every year for winter and the water line from the inside otherwise it'll freeze and break.
You are doing a great job on the ole girl. I love the water tap and think it's quite Victorian actually. God Bless and can't wait for more.
How lovely to see Kim! Before I pressed play I was wondering how she was as we all miss seeing her on the vlogs. Enjoy your holiday Kim and hope to see you again soon. Loving the wall and glad you told all those who think they know better that the way you work on this house and any decisions you make are always of benefit to the house, in whatever order you do them. You’re doing a great job.
Hello, Kaleb! OMG, your tuckpointing is SOOOO beautiful! I was admiring it so much when we were at the house last week. I have a special request~~~Can you please film a video of you scraping out the old mortar between the stones, and prepping the wall for the new mortar? Our home needs that desperately, and I am not sure where to start or how it is done. Thank you for the wonderful conversation and warm friendship. We always enjoy our time with you guys so much. Thank you, also, for being a beacon of light and kindness for a city in desperate need of hope and love. We are so proud of all you have accomplished and continue to accomplish each and every day! With all our love to you, Kim and John! Kevin, Helen & Emilie Martin
Remember water shut off inside so you outside tap doesn't freeze over winter
That Quail definitely should go out there. Keep up the progress your hard work shows.
I watch a CZcams channel of a man who lives in France, who is British that is restoring a cottage. He uses that product all the time to fix walls that need repaired. You did a great job with that wall.Hi there Sandy.Cute little Kitty Kat.Hopefully it will warm up soon.Good luck with everything.
What's the new kitty's name? And there's nuthin' more fun than a stairway to race up and down! You are so right, Kaleb about needing the right products/tools available to do the job correctly. I think you're 'famous' enough for the retail people to listen to you! All progress is good.
That tap is going to look amazing outside, it's so cute and fits the house perfectly. Love watching you bring your beautiful home back to life again.
So exciting that you were able to find the right NHL mortar for the foundation. I was pulling my hair out trying to find it before I realized that I have a very early 1910 concrete foundation.
Your aunt and uncle are the best! The quail tap it absolutely gorgeous 👌
Most Excellent!
Focussing on your basement workshop makes perfect sense. Functionality in your workshop will mean faster progress on the pretty stuff. The actual engine room. Given that you will be using power tools and machines in there, having water, power and ventilation is essential. Love the quail tap.
GTSY Kim!! The wall is looking fantastic. Have a great week!!🤗❤️🤍💙
I have been missing Kim as well. Beauty job on the mortar looks good.
Kaleb, I appreciate all of your helpful tips. You're actually becoming quite the teacher. Thanks for the video!
While tuck-pointing a basement wall may be a bit tedious, you are using the correct material, and the benefits will last a long time. Nice plus that the dried mortar reflects more light. Stair repairs ASAP!! Like Kim, I don't like heights, and am always wary of a tumble down the stairs. Cool to see the Vulcan statue, and glad it is still standing after all these years. It makes absolute sense to adjust your schedule to get the most work done where you can, depending on the weather. I had a bird handle spigot for years. That shape is not only cute, but also ergonomic! Fits well in the palm of your hand. :)
I love the quale tap, but I'm concerned about the winterization and such. It appears to not have a vacuum breaker and isn't a frost-free type. You can get screw-on vacuum breakers no problem, but for winterization, I would recommend you put a valve on the water line before it goes into the wall so that you can isolate and drain it to prevent it from freezing damage. (I may not be a plumber, but I'm from a town a few hours away and had a hose bib freeze and burst in the same type of weather that you get.) Either way, it's amazing to see the life you're bringing back into that house, I have been watching since the trailer came out and hope to visit one day. 👍
Aww thanks Kim very cool.
Definitely add handrail for stairs and use it. Very bad to slip speaking from experience (daughter $30K broken ankle surgery)!
It must be anxiety inducing living in the USA
That brings back memories of when we tuck pointed the basement walls of our old Second Empire a few years back. We lime washed the walls afterward and it really brightened up the space. Excellent work sir!
YAAY my favorite restoration channel! Also I figured out I have roots growing through my limestone foundation😅 have alot of replacing and tuckpointung to do this spring
Love the quail tap and the wall looks amazing. You are doing an amazing job on the old girl. She will look so beautiful in the end, and you bet that Mr. Brown is looking down from heaven and saying Thank You for restoring her back to her Glory. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Nice to see you wearing a "This House" hoodie.
Awww. So good to see Kim again. As a native of Alabama, I have to admit we are pretty proud of our Vulcan.😂 Your wall, by the way, looks fantastic! Huge difference. The light reflection is amazing.😊
Nice job Kaleb, now you can come help me with my 1919 brick foundation. 😂 jk
I love seeing Kim again, so sorry you’re working so much Kim. Liked the video of Vulcan in Birmingham.
Love the bird faucet, you’re right it’s so a Victorian style, they definitely would have used it.
*Hello KIM & waves to Kim. Long time no see.. 🙂 We need you back a lot more often & running your YT channel too... cut back your work hours... we need you and so does Kaleb, as he says that he hardly see you, cos you are working. I hope your vaca with your mum was great as it always is 🙂 Kaleb, wow that wall is looking great... I always look forward to seeing your videos and as to watch we will get to see in your next vid 🙂.*
I am amazed how much you get done and by yourself.
Great Progress and it was great to see Kim again! Thanks!
Thanks for the update on Kim. I have missed her sweet smile.
Sandy your cat is so cute! Tuckpointing is such a messy but necessary job. Foundation work is more important than "pretty" work because it's the foundation holding everything together. 😊
I love the quail tap, however I suggest an auto winterizing tap just because you do get cold weather and don’t want leaks
Edit: maybe there’s a way you can incorporate both!
I think it’s the absolute perfect Tab… You’re right I think a Victorian with you and Dio❤
Great foundation work and how terrific of Kim to make the video. Miss her at the house.👍👍🥰
I absolutely agree that the Victorians would have loved that quail tap! That mortar on the wall looks great! I’m so impressed with the different skills you display on the different projects on the house. Very cool segment with Kim! Very cool that the Vulcan statue is still standing. I bet you loved that shirt she got you! Take care.
Great seeing Kim and “yes” love the tap. Well done Kaleb, cheers
Sandy! Great seeing Kim as well. Looks like she is enjoying hard earned time off. Loving the progress on the basement, but looking forward to seeing summer progress on the outdoors.
Nice to see Kim. Her little video was great.
So glad to see Kim & the lime mortar mix is local!
Your home is going to be stunningly beautiful when you are finished. It's so enjoyable for me to check in to see your progress. The best part? You seem to really love and enjoy your time working on restoring her beauty, a bit at a time. As you say, "Progress is progress!" Tell Kim a big thank you for having filmed her video on the Vulcan Statue. All roads lead to St. Louis in one way or another!
Nice job of repointing, Caleb! Glad you are using the correct mortar. So many people use the wrong type and wreck their stonework. Also that you are not omitting the step of wetting it while it cures.
That stonework is beautiful
The tap is super adorable
Great seeing the progress with the pointing; the wall looks great. Nice seeing a bit of Kim with the cool Vulcan statue. Hope she is taking good care of herself with the work schedule she has. 👍 for the quail tap!
It was great to see Kim again. I've seen that Vulcan statue in Birmingham before somewhere. I had no idea it was part of the exhibits at the St.Louis World Fair though.
I like watching the stone foundation walls being brought back to how they should be. It's like you're darning the petticoats! 😂 It really does make a difference in the look and feel of the space and I'm glad to hear that it's cut down on the amount of air flowing in. That will make your bills for heating (and cooling, too, I assume) a little bit lower. Combined with the work on the mansard, things will be much more buttoned up come end of summer!
So happy to see Kim! She looks great and I enjoyed her video clip on the Vulcan in Birmingham. You're getting a great shirt out of the deal, Kaleb! Please tell Kim we all miss her smiling face so much. And I'm glad to see her pretty curls are back!
Thank you Caleb for the update, great to see Kim and yes the Bird tap is super cute, love those little curiosities you can see popped somewhere in a house that you wouldn't expect to find. I have a woodpecker door knocker on my front door 🙂 .. wishing you a great week too .
Sandy seems to be a good supervisor. And YES loved the statue footage!
Hi Kim nice to see you hope you ha e a nice break with
you Mum 👍🤗💐 Caleb love your Tap 🤗👍great progress on wall 🤗👍 🍻
Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Good to see Kim! The basement wall is looking good. Love the quail !
Caleb, that wall really popped when you wet it. Actually very nice! Nice to see Kim, was wondering if you two were still together, lol!
Progress! The basement does look a lot brighter, even just through the camera. I love the bird tap!
Looks good and I like the color!
Good to see Kim
Great seeing Kim again.. Fun tie-in to St. Louis!
The wall looks FANTASTIC Well Done makes a big difference. Love seeing Kim 😊 glad she’s doing well. Your tape is Awesome ❤ I have a brass Kookaburra on my outside tape 💕🇦🇺💕
How exciting for you to be making progress on your home. every little improvement is one you have Done. The Tap is going to look very appropriate on your home. I can’t wait to visit and SEE it one day. Thank Kim for the “blurb” of her VaCa, I hope she had a good and restorative time, it HARD work she’s doing. Have a good week!
That style of stone work was very popular for fireplace feature walls in living rooms or downstairs in the "rumpus" (family) room of 1950s and 60s bungalows.
Nice to see Kim back
Nice to see Kim. Good to renew the foundation. It will eventually be bright and cheerful. Thanks for sharing the progress.
I love the quail tap! I think it will be a nice little addition to the outside and given to you by family. ❤ to you and Kim.
I love watching your progress. I’m cheering you on! I did noticed the space between the joist and the foundation. I believe you can insulate that and save a large percentage on your heating bill. I read that 50 years ago.
Great work in the basement! LOVE the Quail faucet!
It was nice to see Kim. The pointing work is nice.
That tap is perfect. Great seeing Kim again
Nice to see Kim! The walls are looking amazing
I think that the quail tap is very cute! ❤
The basement walls look so amazing…so clean and fresh! Loved Kim’s clip from Birmingham and hope she and her Mom had a wonderful trip. Keep up the great work…the love you have for the grand lady really shines through!
Are you planning any improvements to your kitchen situation soon, or too busy focussing on the big structural stuff? Are you still using a toaster oven etc?
Soon we think.
@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack sounds good! Excited to see it progress.
They installed the Vulcan (the god of metal) in Birmingham and within a few years the federal government prohibited Birmingham from mining iron. (Thanks to influence from robber barons.) The command says don’t make any graven image. Birmingham reaped the reward.
Love the tap!! It was nice to see Kim again!
That foundation wall looks gorgeous!! 😍 The line mortar is definitely more attractive as well as better structurally! 😊👍
Even if you are not outside, there are always other projects to get done. You sure do not lack projects. I like the cute brass tap your Aunt & Uncle gave you. It was so good to see Kim.
Oh hey Kim! That was unexpectedly cool seeing her have some screen time while away at the moment!
Thanks Kim 🎉 good to see you!
That wall looks great! Hi Kim,👋 thanks for the cool clip. Love the quail tap too.
So nice to see Kim! Hello Kim!
You’re doing great. It’s awesome to see family loves whatever you do and is helping in gifting to you your water, Spicket. Kim looks so healthy and beautiful. I hope she has a great time with her mom. I love the walls awesome job
It's amusing seeing the alternating worn toe space on the basement steps going up
love the quail tap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks great Caleb. It was great to see Kim. That Tap is awesome. Looking forward to next segment. Hugs❤
The Sloss furnaces are a really cool abandoned industrial area. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area. The Barber motorsports museum is another hidden gem in the area. A world class car and motorcycle collection and museum tucked away in the Alabama countryside. There's also a fun little air museum near the furnaces.
My mom and I stayed at a hotel near there for one night and there was an old motorcycle in the lobby in a glass case. We’re not motorsports folks but it seems like a neat place. We were actually in Atlanta for the bulk of our trip but we had to go to Birmingham because their zoo has my favorite animal, Pallas’s cats.
Yay! Love seeing Kim! We’ve missed her! Great job on the wall! It’s going great and absolutely brightens up the basement! I think lime washing the entire wall old look great!
I was going to ask if you were using a lime mix…I watch several chateau restorations channels and learned this!!! I am impressed with your work!!! Gold ribbon restoration you have got on your hands!!!❤
Hey Kim!!!!
So glad to see you are well👍😃❤️
Hi Kim, nice to see you. The wall looks great.
Hi Kim and Sandy!
It was definitely great to see Kim again, this time in Birmingham at the Vulcan statue. I hope her job in Urgent Care is enjoyable or at least rewarding in some way.
The quail tap s perfect! Definitely use it! The basement wall is beautiful. You are doing a great job.
