  • Ontario will do away with sick note requirements for short absences as part of a larger effort to ease the administrative burden on doctors, the province’s health minister said Wednesday.
The province will soon introduce legislation that, if passed, will no longer allow employers to require a sick note from a doctor for the provincially protected three days of sick leave workers are entitled to.

so theyre looking to get rid of needing a "sick note", but are requiring you to still provide proof you were sick... this doesn't really solve anything since you still need a receipt or an attestation from someone. If people are afforded 3 days as is mandatory why do you need an excuse why someone is sick?

They don't. That's why they can't ask for one anymore. Workers right to privacy, and at the same time eases doctors, and removes toxic workplace practices regarding notes.
A lot of businesses bully employees by telling them "if they take a sick day, they can't return to work without a note." So there goes that bully tactic.

This policy is meant to help doctors, not workers (unless they don'thave a GP). Take note, however, that Ford plans to let doctors RECORD your private appointments using AI, making your private health information much more accessible by the government through the cloud.

Only 3 sick days to cover 365 days in the year is a joke, and quite offensive to Ontario workers. It was his decision to eliminate the previous 7 sick days to only 3, while the other parties wanted to increase the sick days to 10.
His policies allow corporations to take advantage of workers, and he has allowed the corporations to get away with it.
Ford has always been for the corporates, and not for the blue collar worker. This policy is for the doctors. The workers who have to slog it out in factories etc., were once again, not a consideration for him. His track record shows he doesn't give a damn about Ontario workers.

      What are you talking about?
Every organization switch to Insurance based sick coverage.
The three days, is the waiting period before Insurance kicks in .
Nobody has to accumulate “sick days”
This has nothing to do with Doug Ford, and was policy long before he got into power, which means it was under liberal leader ship .
He is actually improved the situation for almost every worker, by removing the requirement to have a doctors note .

What you call bullying, I call accountability .
You can’t just have people, deciding that they can be off sick, without any representation at all, but still get paid ?
You seriously don’t see any issue with people ripping off the system ?
The other argument, is that if you say you’re sick, and you need to be off work, how do I know you’re well enough to come back to work?
Are you still suffering from whatever element that could affect your job? Are there safety issues if you’re working with other people? Are you contagious?
Maybe I need you to have a doctors note so I can keep my workplace functioning, which was the intent of the legislation.
It’s pretty obvious that there is an issue, when people like you just figure I can just tell them I’m sick and nobody can ever question it… spoken like the broom pusher

I like this decision. Too often bad employers would use the doctor's note ploy to punish an employee for being absent, to encourage less absenteeism. Many, many people don't have family doctors, so are subject to paying for a doctor's note at a clinic or ER (a little more than twenty bucks). Fastenal Canada used this tactic to get employees they no longer wanted to quit voluntarily. The company paying only a little better than minimum wage, that twenty dollar return-to-work ticket seemed unnecessarily punitive, somewhat mean spirited.
