- Join me and my husband Mark for a day in the life of a doctor in the hospital. We’ve flown up to Sault St. Marie, Ontario to help with the doctor shortage. Learn about septic shock, acute kidney injury, hyperkalemia (high potassium) and some very unusual heart rhythms!
Thank you to the Sault Area Hospital, Hali and Sydney and to the entire medical team for making this video possible.

It must be so special to work in the same field as your husband. The amount of mutual understanding must be huge. CANADIAN POWER COUPLE
Well, they did meet in medical school.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
missed. you. siobhan!!
Ok so of course we all know she is a literal angel on earth, but can we talk about how SO IS HER HUSBAND?!?!?!?!?! "let's do something nice for the nurses" my heart melted. Literally a perfect couple of completely angelic people.
I thought the same thing! As a nurse, we so appreciate kind doctors!
I'm so grateful that the hospitals you work in let you record these vlogs. I feel like in the US they wouldn't let you do this.
Some do. I follow some residents and dotors who are in the U.S. I am impressed they let Dr. Max Feinstein use an OR to record though.(Obviously when it's not in use) If you're interested in learning more about anesthesiology, his channel is great.
I feel like they should make it legal but just not allow any filming patients, just like she doesn’t
Are you always so happy and perky? I've been a RN for 35 years and I haven't had the pleasure of coming across a physician like you. God bless you and your husband for your work and bedside manner.
Was in emerg last night with a broken hand, and the amount of code blues I heard broke my heart. So grateful for our doctors ♥️♥️
I hope your ok❤
🙏😢
I love these "Day in the life of a doctor videos", it's so educational and gives an insider look into how health care professionals take care of patients day in and day out! Thank you for all that you do!
Truly. And so much more detail than an American doctor. I mean I know we have HIPAA and everything but obviously there's some way to de-identify the patient.
Anyway it's much more interesting than just watching someone walk from here to there to somewhere else and tell us what they had for lunch (and how they put on their makeup, which is really boring)
By the way I remember my father's saying Sault Ste. Marie when I was a kid. I'm not sure quite where it is but it seemed, years later as if it was way off track for where we were going. We went from Boston to Montreal for expo 68 (originally 67 but we were a little late) And then for some reason we ended up in Detroit. I remember going to some restaurant and keeping a napkin so I would remember that I had been in Detroit, but apparently I lost it. So it was decades before I remembered that I've been to Detroit. Just briefly I'm sure. Sort of like Chicago, although we went there to see Donny Osmond in 94 and then off to a Quantum Leap convention in Indianapolis. (And that's most of my experience in the Midwest except for the 4 hours we spent at O'Hare waiting for another flight to join us on our way to Denver)
As an RN, I so appreciate you taking care of those nurses! It's always nice to feel appreciated -- something so seldom these days!
If you don't feel appreciated at your job quit!!!!Don't underestimate your worth. Some other company would love a good nurse.
@@skypie1 I'm not talking about workplace, I'm talking about co-workers -- Dr's more specifically! Some are so kind like Siobhan and Mark, and some who walk right past you like you're invisible.
Amen!! 😊
@@robbieomalley371The statement still stands. If the company you work for, allow any staff, to continue with behavior that makes others uneasy, leave. know your worth.
@@skypie1 unfortunately, that's the way every hospital is. Some docs have the world revolve around them, some docs are real team players. I've worked at 3 hospitals so far and that's been the case for all of them.
Having Mark in these videos is SO sweet:) you guys are such a great team!
I love hearing you introduce yourself as a specialist after all these years.
I love that doctors are taking the time to make youtube channels. I don’t know how they manage it all, but I love it.
It’s official. They’re the cutest couple in the history of the world.
Dr. Mark seems to be a natural at vlogging. Also, I liked the dynamic between you two; super informative!
I love that you are so kind to the nurses! I have a vascular surgeon who is fantastic with the nurses that work with her and it makes me respect her even more! She relies on them and uses their expertise a lot!
Thanks for a couple nurse shout-outs!
So many strong team members in a hospital. Often I think house-keeping are some of the most under-rated heroes.
PS. I've seen dextracardia twice and it is kinda cool. Once we could not get an ECG that made sense until the older, laid-back head of the department suggested we reverse the leads. Another time, a parent of a child with known cardiac issues told us as we were putting on monitors so that we wouldn't be confused.
I agree regarding the housekeepers being underrated😢my mom is one at a hospital and sometimes she feels invisible. But I tell her that her job is very important.
Great to see a shout out to the nurses. I have only seen dextracardia once in almost 21 years of nursing and it was so fascinating. The patient knew they had it and was amused at us trying to figure out the ecg 🤣
You guys seem like such nice MD’s I actually wouldn’t get anxious calling you all to give report😂😂😂
It is great to see a channel about practicing medicine in Canada, especially outside of major metropolitan areas, where they may not have the same resources and specialists. Your channel is very interesting and well narrated.
This is a perfect study break for me! I’m a med student currently studying endocrinology. It’s very complicated, so this gives me courage ☺️ thanks doc! 💕
What are you thinking of doing when you’re done?
@@Lauramv1 no idea! Just trying to survive the exams for now!
@@incarosen6343 good luck!
@@Lauramv1aw thank you!
I had an entire course as a premed in endocrinology. I changed my major after "learning" it. Lol, but I am still a premed.
WOOW TWO BRILLIANT MDS. Thank GOD we have MD/DO's!
Wow! I actually know someone with Situs Inversus. You should do a video on how this can affect treatment, etc.
We lived in Moose Factory Ontario for 5 years and locum or visiting physicians were really what allowed our communities to have access to healthcare so thank you for doing what you do and bringing awareness to these parts of healthcare in Ontario that are often overlooked.
Mark’s addition to your videos is great Siobhan!!! Those nurses will always be appreciative of your kindness and bringing of food ☺️.
Hello! I have been watching your videos since I was in middle school, and you were the one that sparked my interests in medicine. Before that, I had no idea what my passion was going to be in life. Now, I'm in high school on the path to becoming a nurse, and I cannot thank you enough. You opened my eyes to something I never found interesting before. I wish your husband and you only the best ❤❤
Thank you for showing your interactions with the Nursing staff. It was wonderful ❤
Hey there, Really enjoy these videos, i love the fact that you flew out to help with a doctor shortage with your Husband Mark, i wish all the best for you and mark.
You must be the most chipper doctor I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of doctors (as a patient). I wanted to be a doctor when I was young, but as I got older, I started thinking that being around sick people all day would probably depress me. I think that's why I'm amazed at your upbeat attitude. Anyway, good job on the videos. Medicine always interests me, and since I'm at the hospital so often, I often wonder what's happening behind the scenes.
She’s Canadian lmao
Hello Dr. Siobhan, That was a great time of you with your husband taking care of all kinds of patients in the hospital. I appreciate your good service Siobhan
I take care of patients with ESRD on dialysis. I have a patient who consistently has a K+ between 7 and 9! No symptoms. She insists she doesn’t eat fruits or veggies. She doesn’t have constipation (which can cause hyperK+ in ESRD). Loved having Mark share screen time with you!
These are my favorite videos of yours! Wonderful to see Mark again. It must be so nice being able to work so close together. 😊
Hi Siobhan!! Thank you for everything you do!
Loved this duo video!! Thank you to you both!
That was absolutely the sweetest getting some treats for the nurses!!! Love that you two are living life and traveling. I love all your videos so keep them coming!! ❤❤❤❤
There is so much here. Answering your phone as Dr., having your doctor husband go with you to do volunteer hospital care, passion and love for your profession and those lovely freckles from all that European hiking. Plus all the learning I receive from your videos. I absolutely love it.
Awesome vlog! Love to see you and Mark working together ♡

I forgot to mention, I Love watching your videos! I was diagnosed with MDS in November. Also, I have RA and Systemic Scleroderma. I have learned so many things from your videos. I forgot. I also have Von Willie brand disease. Keep-up the positivity and great outlook into medicine! ❤
Great video! Loved seeing both of you!
Love the caption of your two doctors just doing their job
Loved this video. Thank you both for making this.
I just found your page, I was a paramedic in a hospital and on the truck. I have been out of EMS for about 3 years now and its really weird not working 24 hour shifts anymore or knowing when you are going to get to eat or sleep. Everytime your pager goes off I get that little adrenaline rush again! Please keep posting your videos are awesome!
Love videos with you and your husband like this.
I am a systems engineer. I went straight to the signal interference. The only thought I had different was what's called a "Ground loop" where currents flow through the equipment (patient) where it shouldn't. Usually ground loops create a hum noise. Or problems with communicating from one thing to the other. It's detected by measuring current between different parts and seeing that it's not zero. The worst case is infamous in rock performance. A musicians microphone was connected on one side of the stage and the electric guitar on the other. He stepped up for his performance, grabbed the mic stand with one hand the guitar fret board with the other. He then writhed and gyrated, there was a loud humming, the crowd roared with his exciting performance, and he finally fell to the stage electrocuted.
IM LOVING how you are making your videos show a lot of the interdisciplinary team involved with doctors, especially the nurses! I feel like a lot of medical vlogs never include that and as a nursing student myself I love seeing this team work in real practice
Drs. Siobhan and Mark, your good vibes made me remember the lyrics of that R.E.M. song (Shiny happy people ).
I’m a long time fan, and a soo native! Im so happy you are enjoy the city and our hospital! I hope you get to stay around enough to see the beautiful summer!!!! Thankyou a million!!!
I absolutely love that there are doctors dentist and all kinds of different people in the medical field that want to share their experiences and their lives working in the fields that they choose to people on the internet. I've learned so much from watching your videos other people's videos letter in the medical field and I think it's so cool how much that we don't know and how much we can soak in and learn from people like you. It's also cool to see what's real versus what you see on these TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and things like that. It's so fascinating to me to see all the things you go through and what it's like really to be a doctor and to learn about these patients and how to help them. Thank you so much for what you do. I look forward to every single video you post. I hope you continue to share and give us the knowledge that we could definitely use and need.
These videos never fail to inspire and motivate me to continue my journey! Thank you for being you🤍
Great video. It’s so nice you got to work together. I love the cases you share🤗🤗
Lucky people in the Sault, to get this wonderful totally remarkable medical duo!! ❤😻
I absolutely love your videos. After working in hospitals most of my life you are both so real and so accurate. You're both just so compassionate and on point 👏
You are the cutest couple! You both are such wonderful people and doctors! ❤
I love listening to these two explain their fields and medical expertise. Listening to professionals who know what they're talking about is so satisfying. Bonus if they're nice people too😁
I’m a medical coder and also a violinist and just love your videos!!! I learn so much!! You do such a great job of explaining things!!
I was in the hospital for just under 5 months days due to a sport injury - I'm doing better now, 2 surgeries and multiple broken bones later, as soon as I was admitted to a ward after I went into A&E (accident and emergency) there was a young lady (not much older then me) that went into speptic shock literally minutes after breakfast and just a general conversation, she was just in the bed opposite me, but I felt hopeless simply because I couldn't move, it was very scary for me goodness how she and the whole family felt and she was immediately treated and transferred to a larger hospital... I was transferred to the same hospital 4 weeks later due to my complex injury and we were in the same department again! This was a while ago now, totally a random comment but you and Mark are just amazing! Your smiles are both contagious and you are just the ultimate power couple!!
You guys look so happy :) I love seeing you power couple together
I love both you guys in the vlogs, it's awesome not to just follow you along but also your husband! Back in the day (post war era in Belgium, EU) my gran (mom to 10) had an internal medicine doctor as her family doctor. He soon went on to be the doctor for our entire (extended) family. He was *that* good!
I love watching your videos and thanks to my nursing degree and studies I can follow the entire story. A revision plus enjoyable content of patient care! I am so glad you guys are enjoying life ❤
I think it’s cool that you come to the Sault to help out. I live in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
@Violin MD I can't describe how much I love, love, love videos like this. Hubbie and wife team showing us such interesting cases. Tne Dextrocardia blew me away . And woahhh about that heart rhythm , great detective work Siobhan as there can be a simple underlying explanation. You are both so thoughtful in thinking of your co workers.🤗
The both of you make a great team as doctors. I love your videos.
I love you and your husbands video’s so much. I find myself so intrigued and wanting to learn more about my own health! :)
Such a fantastic couple!
Yay! I love when you feature my small town in your videos :). So happy to have you both here!
so cool that your husband is in the video also and od the smae as you. telling what it is and what he's doing. i like this!
I have always enjoyed ur videos. I started when u were a second year resident ( but I binged all the early videos). Really enjoy u and mark doing this together. Like 2 peas in a pod.
Great timing! Last shift I had a patient with septic shock
Love these videos and love when Mark is in them too!
You guys are such a nice couple! I love these videos with the both of you.
Good afternoon, Dr. Siobhan and Dr. Mark! It's great to hear from you! Have a great weekend!
An Excellent & Very Informative talk. THANK YOU.
Thank you for this. I was bedside with my father while he went into septic shock about a year ago and I’m still having PTSD about it... But it is so warming to see a doctor be as anxious as family is.
I love watching your videos as you just get started in your career! I am a retired X-ray tech with 30+ years in the hospital, and then retired due to cardiac sarcoidosis and advanced heart failure and all that goes along with that. Keep posting your videos, I love them!
