  • In this video, I cover how to upgrade the brakes on a 5th gen Rav4 2019-2024. This upgrade covers all models of the 5TH gen RAV4 that I am aware of. Please post up if you know different! Also, the part numbers below are specifically for units with electric parking brake. Not sure if there was ever one without it. I really like the feel of this upgrade. Much better pedal feel after bleeding properly and just feels like it should have come from the factory. No clue why they slapped the already poor single piston front brakes from the camry on the RAV4?? Was an odd choice. This is basically the setup that comes on the TRD V6 Camry from the factory along with several other Toyota and Lexus models.
    I went a bit full pull in this video changing front calipers, rotors, pads and also rear rotors and pads. You can get away with this upgrade by just ordering front rotors and pads only (links below). So far, I am really happy with the rotors and calipers I ordered. I will always report back if I find an issue.
    Parts I used in this video - click below to jump right to them!
    Front and rear brake rotors set that has been excellent for me. Buy from Amazon or Ebay

    Calipers from Detroit Axle. Buy from Amazon or Ebay

    Front Power Stop Brake Pads:
    amzn.to/469EG0c
    Rear Power Stop Brake Pads:
    amzn.to/47a2hyS
    Optional basic front rotors with pads! Callahan brakes,. While funny (think Tommy boy) they are actually Power Stop. Quality stuff - never had an issue. Combine these with the DA calipers below and you have a simple, super cheap, effective big brake upgrade.
    amzn.to/3sFjfGm
    The RAV4 comes with DOT3 brake fluid which is more resistant to moisture. Use this - compatible with 3 and 4 temp wise. 1 bottle is plenty unless you want to flush front and rear lines. Then buy 2.
    amzn.to/3MFBxhQ
    Large syringe I use when bleeding brakes, captures the fluid and you know how much has come out of each caliper.
    amzn.to/47biYtN
    20MM Wheel Spacers I use. Puts the factory wheels flush with the fenders. NO RUBBING with my up-sized 245-55-R19 tires!
    amzn.to/3MB85JO
    Brake caliper compressors I have in my shop an recommend:
    My favorite by Dasbet:
    amzn.to/3FU48fx
    2nd favorite for single piston calipers:
    amzn.to/3uklFdZ
    One that can come in handy. Use it occasionally:
    amzn.to/3QEhyAW
    Tires I upgraded to on the 19" factory wheels. Larger, wider and no rubbing. Looks really good and perfect for forest road / basic offroad adventures. Big upgrade from factory tires while keeping the smooth highway ride and feel.

    Question: Do you know how to put the parking brake into service mode? I think it’s the ignition in on position parking brake switch up 3 times down 3 times and then hold down until motor stops, and then hold up until motor stops to get out of it?
    In your piston area calculations did you factor the OD and ID of the piston(s)?

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Před měsícem

      I only calculated from the outside diameter since the pistons form a ring and are not solid surfaces.

    how are the very cheap off brake Calipers doing because i have a 2023 toyota rav4 that i want to do this to also but afiad about running the very cheap brake Calipers

      Good question. I bought them as I had used Detroit axle stuff on a few different projects and have always had good luck. So far, zero issues. I will of course post up in the future if I ever have a problem! They seemed very well built just handling them. No red flags. You could always buy OEM or used OEM off ebay too if you have a worry as Advics is TOP notch stuff.

    nicely done...toyota should think about offering this as an upgrade.. what I would want to consider is if this would affect the 5 year warranty and insurance of the car..any thoughts??

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Před 8 měsíci

      Never seen an upgrade that affects insurance unless installed in a way that causes an accident. Warranty would likely be void on the brake system if the brake system was to fail (virtually never gonna happen). Example, your wiper motor or radio stops working. They cannot blame your brakes.

    Do you happen to have the part/model # of the brake calipers? When I click the amazon link it’s saying for Lexus models & Toyota Highlander.
    Also, what Vehicle(s) Year(s) & Model(s) are these brake calipers, rotors, the front pads listed in your links for (I have a 2021 RAV4 XSE Hybrid & all if these parts say they don’t fit my vehicle) & what are the current brand/model # of front brake pads you’re running? Please let me know, thanks!

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Před 2 dny

      They are all the same caliper. Just not painted red as with the TRD camry. And correct, no website will show they fit the rav4 as this is an aftermarket modification not offered by toyota. I run the powerstop Z17 pads linked in the video description.

      @@MR_Garage So if I’m wanting to run a different brake pad up front, I need to search for what year(s) of a Toyota Camry TRD- as with the Caliper item descriptions nothing I saw mentioned a Toyota Camry of any year or model? I typically run R1 Concepts rotor/ceramic pads as I like them much more than power-stop which is why I ask. Fantastic tutorial btw- this has to be a game changer for stopping power.

      @MR_Garage  Před dnem

      @@LuisGonzales-w2t Look for 2019 - 2024 TRD camry pads. Checked R1's site, they do not offer pads for the TRD camry (or variant like the highlander). The feel is for sure more refined and confident especially coming to a stop from an offramp from a freeway or downhill stops (we have a few mountain passes here in Az which are pretty hard on brakes - the off-ramp is literally downhill to a stop). Very noticeable when the car is loaded down too. Less grabby than stock (stock pads are always grabby cold), but much better, more linear pedal feel. When you want to stop, you stop!

    i just install mine and it work fine but the brake pedal feel different form the oem one i did bleed all 4 brakes and did use new akebono brake pads

    • @MR_Garage
      @MR_Garage  Před 16 dny

      Pedal will feel different. Did you bed in the pads and rotors? This process drastically changes the feel. If you are confident in the bleeding process you did, take a few good runs on the freeway and coming off the ramp, heat the brakes up down the ramp. Make them hot.
      Also, did you wipe all the oils off the new rotors? If not, you will burn it off in the bedding process. Will be a smoke show 😆

      @@MR_Garage i did re bleed them because i think i did it the wrong right the frist time i did bleed the rear driver than rear pass than fornt driver than fornt pass is that how u bleed yours and now the brake pedal feel a lot better and i did a few hard stop so maybe that help
